      Barton Under Needwood

      October 21, 2020 in England ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

From Alweras, the route was rather sedate. Although we joined the river, there were a good number of long straight stretches before we rejoined the canal at Wychnor...and more long straight bits after that, bordered by the noisy A38. At Barton Marina, we moored up to walk into Barton-under-Needwood. A bit of a walk from the canal, this small town also boasted a fabulous cafe - The Skinny Kitten. Not only did they have an extensive collection of exquisite homemade cakes, the also had the biggest gin list I had seen and a selection of craft ales too! So we had more cake but this time with alcohol...rocky road with Black Powder Salted Caramel gin for me and lemon and elderflower cake for Ben with Rocky ale from Shiny Brewery. In fact the cafe was so good we stayed for a second drink - Ben trying Shiny Brewery's Affinity and me trying the Drunshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin (lemon, lime, grapefruit and gunpowder tea). Wandering back to the boat, we stopped by Barton Marina for a coffee but the whole place had the feel of an overly-manicured gated community, so we didn't stay long.Read more

      Wolseley

      October 29, 2020 in England ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Before we left Fradley, I cooked a full English to set us up for the day, and headed for the first lock. From here, rather than jumping back on the boat, mum and I walked canalside for about three miles, detouring through Handsacre and Armitage to a fantastic bakery.

We pushed on to Wolseley where we popped back into the antique shops and I purchased a superb wooden jointed rabbit (and mum bought a dragonfly which would caught controversy!). At the Wolseley Arms pub, we had a few drinks and some dinner, before returning to the boat to work through the gin we had brought with us but were yet to touch!

      Wolseley Wildlife Centre

      October 18, 2020 in England ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

An early start for me to finish a bit of work, although I popped out for a bit of misty morning photography first. After breakfast we walked into Wolseley and had a rummage through a fabulous antique shop and a small gift shop.

Over the road was the Wildlife Centre. Here a raised boardwalk ran through the trees and lakes, looking over myriad waterfowl including some pretty bold geese! It was a very pleasant way to begin the day rather than simply eating, unmooring and heading out.

      Wolseley Bridge

      October 17, 2020 in England ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

After our stunted start, we made good progress through the locks south of Stone. Travelling alongside the Trent, we saw masses of Canadian geese, ducks and even alpacas! The friendly swans visited us as we waited for locks to fill. I took over driving for a while, which turned out to be a challenge - my driving was fine but Ben's map reading was so questionable he got off far too early for a lock and ended up having to get back on the boat!

En route we found a lovely farm shop/cafe just outside of Great Haywood, picking up some lovely bread and cakes for the journey. The rain misted in as we left the farm shop but not enough to hold us back.

We were aiming for Great/Little Haywood, but decided to push on just little to Wolseley Bridge. A quick wander from the boat revealed a 26 acre wildlife refuge and antiques shops that made planning for tomorrow very simple. Whilst the Indian restaurant and the local pub had no table available for us to eat at, we had a few pints at the Wolseley Arms before eating some of our recently purchased baked goods on the boat (after a quick stop at Londis for playing cards that we obviously forgot - standard). Given the local amenities, and the tiredness of end of term, we had an early night in anticipation of the onward journey.

      Shugborough

      October 30, 2020 in England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

We split up this morning, with Ben and I departing the boat at 8am for an hour's walk to the Shugborough National Trust estate. Mum and Kev stayed behind with the boat to visit the antique shops in Wolseley and buy a rabbit of their own.

The walk up the canalside in the early morning sunshine was lovely, and we visited the Essex Bridge at Greater Haywood, the oldest surviving packhorse bridge in the UK apparently. We took some time to play with our cameras taking photos at the bridge before walking through to the estate itself. COVID regulations meant an annoying myriad of one way or locked routes (annoying only as it seemed to serve little purpose to the prevention of spreading the disease), but we walked through and up to Hadrian's Arch under a threatening sky. Here we played some more with the cameras and then walked back down to the walled garden. The Head Gardener's house is stunning, if sadly disused, but the produce here was extensive and we took some deliciously fresh blackberries.

A call from mum informed us not only that they had moored up near us, but also that Kev had managed to fall in to the canal (although understanding why took work given her hysterical laughter!).

We wandered up the canal to the Canalside Farm Shop and Cafe where we had a well-deserved breakfast. The farm shop sells the most lovely looking food so I bought a few cakes for the final day before we went back to the boat to head for Stone.

Findern and Spread Eagle for refreshment

      May 4, 2022 in England ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

A rainy start to the day but we were still able to walk to Ellie’s. I spent time with Eris whilst Tony and Ellie cleaned their motorhome ready for Eris’s first trip out in the motorhome on Saturday. In the afternoon we went to Dobbies garden centre for afternoon tea. In the evening we went with Ellie, Ross and Eris to The Spread Eagle in Rolleston for Eris’s first pub supper!

Tomorrow we head for Holyhead and the start of our Irish adventure!

      Dubious Start

      May 2, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Things started to go wrong when we saw the signboard that the M40 was closed between Junction 11 and 12 in both directions due to an accident and the live updates looked like it would be for several hours so we took a “scenic route”. Next an engine management light flashed up followed by a message saying the stop start system wasn’t working! We stopped and studied the manual which said it was ok to continue and decided it wouldn’t be a problem as our vehicle is only 18 months old, under warrantee and has Fiat Camper Assist so it would be easy just to give them a call on arrival - THINK AGAIN!!! We started with calling the number in the Fiat information book and got the message number not recognised. We looked it up on the internet, same number, same message. The number was international so we tried different combination of plus signs instead of 00 etc but always got the same message. We then started looking for Fiat Professional garages on the Fiat website which also didn’t work very well. Next we logged into our Fiat profile and found 2 other numbers, first one - you guessed it number not recognised. Second number we got to speak to someone who preceded to tell us we weren’t covered on Fiat Assist then it sometimes takes a while for information to come through from Fiat, we pointed out we registered it in 2020 and even spoke to someone in Milan who confirmed we were covered for the first 3 years. The penny then dropped the call centre person hadn’t taken on board we were a motorhome not a car! So she tried to put us through to the camper department but it didn’t work. Loosing the will to live and imagining what this would have been like if we were in some foreign destination, with half the van ripped off due to an accident, I gave the number a try on my mobile and hallelujah we got through. A lovely lady called Laura found us on the system and is sending out someone to look at the van tomorrow morning. Tony has spent the last hour in “conversation” with Tesco mobile to see why his phone can’t call this number but not resolved. It is one of those days when you think “isn’t modern technology wonderful???”Read more

      The Peak District

      June 21, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Packed our bags again for our move down to the Peak District. We have booked a cottage near Hollington in Staffordshire. Started the drive by picking up coffee and cakes in Hovingham then set off South.
First part of the drive was mostly motorways but then we diverted through the Peak National Park. Stunning scenery again. Stopped for lunch in Buxton which is a spa town that once had pretensions to rival Bath. Stopped to ask a lady who was filling up drinking bottles at a natural spring about the water quality and she said it was the best. Unfortunately, we didn't have our drinking bottles with us so we'll never know!
Arrived at the cottage about 4pm. We are in a little hamlet with about 6 houses and a pub. Cottage is well presented and comfortable with great views over the fields which includes the ruins of an abbey about 1 mile away down the valley. Can't wait to explore. Had dinner at the Raddle Inn only a couple of hundred yards up the road. Food was interesting, huge servings, average quality.

      Missing Day

      June 26, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Just checked the blog and realised we had lost a day. Now what did we do that day?
We have decided to stay another 3 nights at Stalkers cottage. It is so comfortable it is not worth leaving. Also the owners were very obliging and gave us the cottage for 40 pound a night.
Our day was a quiet one, catching up on washing and lunch at Denstone Farm Shop.
