Leaving UK flying home to NZ family

      September 18, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Well folks that's it...my big adventure almost over with just 30 hours til I touch down in NZ.

It has been an amazing experience and I'm going home to reflect, write and keep in touch. I was so glad I'd taken my big suitcase out to the airport yesterday, as there was no train from the station at Barons Court today. They are working on the lines so that meant a big walk this afternoon into Hammersmith with 9 kilos on my back and three in a carry all!!

There I caught the bus to Osterley which got caught in Traffic, and took a bit longer adding to concrn that we wouldn't name it in time to collect my suitcase from left luggage. As I walked I gave myself a good talking to. The worst that could happen would be paying for extra time!! So my heart rate under control with my 7/4/8 breathing, I slowed down and gave myself a good pat on the back for taking care of myself.

Then it was down a ramp under the road and up another ramp to Osterley station to catch the underground to Heathrow...right into the terminal. It's amazing!! We're away ...cheerie for now xxx❤️‍🩹💖💕💕 ps ..sunrise near Doha photo and boarding passes, and done if the route it was an easy journey ...

Made it to London Heathrow. Transferred terminals with ease. Am a little worried about my bag. It was checked in at Lisbon and lots of people here keep asking to look at my bag sticker thingy...as if they dont think the system is right. V sad to be leaving Lisbon. But also looking forward to coming homeRead more

      Travel days

      July 15 in England ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

After two trains and the travelling the length of the Piccadilly line we arrived at Heathrow too early for bag drop 🙃 We eventually checked our bags in which had to go in oversized luggage and joined the enormous security queue. We then ventured into terminal 4 which has the smallest selection of restaurants in the world and decided that the only one in our price range was the Spoons. 2 pints of Guinness and 2 beers later we did some wandering only to discover we’d actually been ripped off and the £7 pint we could have gotten cheaper elsewhere.
We boarded our first flight expecting the worst. We were given a row all to ourselves, lots of goodies, some cool plane socks and lots of films to watch. I was accidentally given fish pie for my meal at midnight when I asked for the vegetarian option and Sam enjoyed a chicken biryani, we were then fed a mozzarella and artichoke pasty about 3 hours later. Apart from some screaming children an all round pleasant experience.
We arrived in Saudi Arabia ready for a short brew before our next flight. We went to our gate and boarded one of 5 buses which drove through a tunnel for 15 minutes before arriving at our plane. This plane was not as luxurious as the last and very very busy. Both extremely tired at this point we just wanted to get going, only to be told there was a technical issue. We waited and after already being an hour delayed we were told to go back to the gate. We got a free carton of orange juice tho. We returned to the gate now stressing that our luggage could get lost and waited for another hour before boarding another bus for not as long to our new plane.
Just as busy and chaotic. We eventually departed 3 hours late and were starving. After what seemed like forever we were fed hash browns, scrambled eggs, a croissant and a cup of tea. We then discover we had significantly less films to choose from. 10 hours later and Sam had max an hour sleep whereas I had slept through every film I started. At 1am we were given our second meal- a pulled beef cob? We think? Eventually landed at 2am and had to wait another hour for our bags.
We needed SIM cards for our phones and were persuaded by the two dancing guys in one of the stalls to go to them.
Finally left the airport and was screamed at by 100 taxi men asking if we wanted a taxi. Even some wanting to cancel our one booked online. An hour later driving through the actual slums of Jakarta we arrived at our hostel. Jumped straight into bed, desperate for a good night sleep.

      London Heathrow-Abu Dhabi...just waiting

      November 14, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Touchdown at 11 this morning, I had reserved a 5-hour slot in the Plaza premium lounge, because I had such a long layover. When I finally got to the right terminal, I wasn't able to pick up my bag until 17:30 !!! So I'm sitting at Café Nero waiting for them to open the check in so I can get some time in the "better lounge" before the next flight to Abu Dhabi which is at 21:00!!Read more

      flight to the states

      November 1, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

      (surprisingly long one)

the (probably) longest journey of this entire trip awaits. i have to leave the hostel in rome, get to the bus station, take the night bus to milan, find a shuttle to the airport and hop on a flight to london and then to boston.

i've never flown alone before, so i basically spent the entire day waiting and going over my plans. in the morning, i had looked up restrictions on bringing camping stoves on a flight. apparently, it's super difficult and requires a lot of cleaning, paperwork and luck.

      i had four options:
      - bring the stove with me and hope it's cleaned thoroughly enough, risking losing it or having oversized luggage
      - put the stuff into a train station locker or hostel storage room
      - hide it somewhere near the airport or trainstation in milan, once again risking losing it
      - find someone living milan to store it

i spent a couple of hours calling hostels, asking if they could store my stove for a week, but they, either refused or demanden copious amounts of money, as did all the otther locker facilities in milan.

i then went on couchsurfing, asking around for anyone who would do me the favour. no response. i mentally prepared for having to hide my stuff. luckily, my parents then reminded me that some time ago, our family had accomodated an italian exchange student from milan for a year. so i hit her up, and she immediately arranged for her boyfriend to keep my equipment.

i had several difficulties finding and getting to the night bus, but i barely managed in time. the ride wasn't exactly comfortable, but as good as it gets for less than 8€. i also met robert lee, a software engineer from china who had lived in the us and in germany for a year, respectively. he promptly invited me to come to china soon and offered to help me get a visitor visa. i secured his phone number and we stayed in touch, you never know ;)

in the morning, i made breakfast (half a litre of the most disgusting monster energy flavour i have ever tasted). after 9 hours, we finally arrived in milan in the pouring rain. i had been sent a video by the aforementioned italian showing parts of milan completely flooded, i just had to hope it wouldn't affect me too much.

in milan, i finally found the long awaited central decathlon, where i bought some warm socks and gloves for the zero degree new hampshire weather, as well as some new headphones (that don't sound like tin), because the cheap ones i had bought in naples were already broken.

at now around 10, i headed to the apartment of the guy that was going to keep my stuff for me. his parents were there too, everybody was super friendly and i had to refuse many many invitations for food and drink. i actually left not only my stove, but also my sleeping bag, tent, and other stuff i wouldn't be needing.

after getting two kebabs as provisions, i managed to find a shuttle to the airport. it was still raining buckets and at some points i was pretty sure we would either sink or slide off the road, but after an hour i arrived at the terminal with two and a half hours to go.

boarding the plane was the easiest part and with my newly acquired netflix account time flew, just like my plane two hours later. after a short layover in heathrow, i was already on the 777 to boston. american airlines isn't the ryanair i'm more used to, and my middle class ass was shocked to find that i actually got free food and drinks.

on this flight, i had the perhaps most interesting convo of this entire trip. and it wasn't with some 20 year old, but with the 78 year old american next to me. he was still super sharp for his age had a master in mathematics and used to be a computer engineer right from day one.

after 7 hours, we touched down in boston. border security had me by the balls for the next hour, obviously very suspicious of me and my visit to a guy i had only known for a month. i hadn't slept this entire time and my voice almost gave out a couple of times because i hadn't had enough to drink, but eventually, they let me go.

and so there i was, on the other side of the planet, finally having set foot on non-european soil for the first and hopefully not last time of my life.

Last Day - For this trip

      April 14 in England ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Last day for the trip today. Repacked the cases and packs. Serious cameras etc all put away. Our flight isn't until 9pmish but the hire car had to be back by 5:00pm. After some hold-ups on the motorway we made it with 10 minutes to spare
Just veging and waiting for our flight now. Don't know what gate we should be at yet. 12hrs or so to Malaysia and the 5hrs home. It's been a long trip.
Have included a photo of a British kebab. Different to what I am used to and way bigger. Could not eat it all.
