Lunch Time Organ Concert, Leeds Minster

Leeds Minster is a beautiful gothic church. On display is a 10th century Anglo-Saxon sculpture of a cross from the old church, beautiful stained glass and carved wood balconies and pulpit, and a fantastic organ. The organ is one of the most famous instruments in Britain. Dr. Samuel Sebastian Wesley, the greatest church musician of the Victorian period, was organist from 1842-49.

We happened to be there when a lunch time concert was about to start. The organ is right in the middle of the church, and all the seats are great for hearing everything.

Outside the church is a graveyard, which was very crowded so the tombstones were placed right next to each other.Read more

A Visit to Kirkstall Abbey

We drove into Leeds to see Kirkstall Abbey ruins. It's a Cistercian abbey, founded in the 12th century by Benedictine monks who desired to live a stricter life of silence, prayer, manual labor, and seclusion from the world. They raised sheep and sold the wool to support the abbey. The monks were called White Monks because of the white color of their undyed wool robes.

King Henry VIII dissolved the abbeys in the 1500s and plundered anything of value, especially the lead roofs. So the rest of the building fell into ruins. In the 1800s the road to Leeds actually went through the front (west) door of the church and out where the large east window was. During the Victorian era, people wanted to preserve it, so they rerouted the road and rebuilt the east wall to prevent traffic from going through.Read more

Visiting Elland Road Home Of Leeds Utd.

Took a trip down to Elland Road today, the home of my favourite football team Leeds United. The stadium is in a really bad shape and it needs a lot of money put back into it.

After the visit to the stadium I took a short visit to our museum. For lunch I went back into the city of Leeds and I had traditional Fish & Chips, it was very tasty but not very healthy. Walk around the shops for a couple of hours before returning home to my sister's.Read more

A Day Out in Leeds

We took the bus down the hill and into the city of Leeds. It's so much nicer than trying to drive in the city, and try to find parking which is usually expensive. Besides, we get to see the area from the top of the double decker bus.

We went to Millennium Square, where there is a huge Leeds Civic Hall, topped by steeples and golden owls. The owl is the symbol of Leeds, taken from the first city alderman's coat of arms.

Next was a visit to the city museum, and a then quick look at the beautiful domed Town Hall.

Leeds used to be a smoky, dirty, industrial city. During WWII, it was bombed nine times. So there are many types of architecture, old and new. The city is well known for its beautiful shopping arcades made of grand old buildings.Read more

Beautiful Indoor Markets, Leeds

The Corn Exchange, built in 1863, was where trading of corn and other commodities took place. It is elliptical in shape with skylights so buyers could examine the grain on the sellers' desks. In 1990 it was refurbished as a shopping center.

Just 1 block away is Kirkgate Market, one of the largest indoor markets in Europe, with stalls for fresh produce, fish, seafood, bakery goods, and more. It was the home of the original Marks and Spencer, which in 1884 started out as a 6' X 4' "Penny Bazaar".Read more

We took the Park and Ride bus to Leeds city center for some more exploring.
There are so many variations of architecture!

Also saw another interesting Victorian pub, Duck and Drake, which has at least 15 cask ales on offer.Read more

Da ich im internet viel gutes gehört über die Stadt gehört habe und die Hostels günstiger gewesen sind, konnte ich mir es nicht entgehen lassen, die einstündige Fahrt aufzunehmen und mein Abend in Leeds zu verbringen.
Ich finde es schön, dass ich viele Leute treffe, die sich für meine Reisen bzw. mein Blog interessieren. So lernte ich auch diesmal während der Fahrt ein Einheimischen kennen. Nachdem ich mir einige Hotspots eingeholt habe, ging’s dann schon Richtung Hostel.
Ein weiteres Mal wurde mir bewiesen, dass auf Google Maps kein Verlass ist, so lief ich 2km in die falsche Richtung, um dann zu sehen, dass ich im nirgendwo gewesen bin. Im Hostel angekommen musste ich erstmal ziemlich schmunzeln, so war der Hostel Besitzer teils zu motiviert und zeigte mir mit aller Elan alle Räumlichkeiten. Als einziger Mitarbeiter, merkte man sofort, dass er nicht nur im sondern auch für das Hostel lebt.
Nach kurzer Zeit lernte ich den Niederländer Stan kennen. Auf den zu den Bars bemerkten wir schnell, dass alles um 23 Uhr zu macht und falls wir was gefunden haben, war kaum etwas los. Wir trafen auf eine Gruppe von Einheimischen und folgten ihnen zu den wahrscheinlich einzigen Club in den zumindest etwas lief…. Immerhin war Alkohol sehr günstig, so zahlte ich nie mehr als 2,5£ für ein alkoholisches Getränk.

Insgesamt hat mich der Tag gekostet:

A long walk in Kirkstall, Leeds

Had a great day today. Went to the cinema to see Topgun, Maverick with Tom Cruise. After the film I took a very long walk along the river Aire and Kirkstall Abby. ( It's meant to be haunted).
