      Taking Flight

      30. maj, England ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Our overnight stop was very peaceful with just the sound of the birds and cows nearby. After casting off this morning we had a bit of a stretch before our first lock of the day. Edward of course wanted another go at the tiller and now frequently sits with his hand behind the skipper’s.

We stopped in Stone and were lucky enough to get the mooring right next to M&S. After a quick shop we were straight into lock routine, with a slight delay as we were following another boat. This was the first of four very close locks (the Stone Flight) raising us a total of 39 ft 4 inches. The friendly crew of the boat behind us helping us up the flight. It pays for crews to help each other in locks as it also speeds up their passage. In the second lock of the flight a crew member from the descending boat opened the gate paddle a little too soon and quickly for this skipper’s liking - sending a raging torrent of water into the lock chamber and our boat bobbing about like a cork!

At the top of the flight we stopped for lunch and a recharge before the next flight of four locks at Meaford, another 32 ft 5 inches. This time with no outside help the skipper assisted with some paddles and gates when he could. Our experience of these locks was considerably drier than on the descent!

A bit of a cruise followed and saw us moor up a short distance from the Plume of Feathers pub, owned by Neil Morrissey, and just before the Wedgwood factory. We have been entertained this evening by geese coming to the offside window and waiting expectantly for food!

      Our Journey Begins.

      25. maj, England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Our big holiday adventure for the year brings us back to the water and a week long trip down the Trent and Mersey. We arrived at the hire base after lunch, just as the cleaner had finished getting everything ready.
Festival Park Marina is on the site of the National Garden Festival which was held in 1986. Before that it was a steel works with blast furnaces. Directly opposite the marina is the site of the Etruria Works. Opened in 1769 this was the Wedgwood factory until around 1940 when the works were moved to their present site.

As we have been with Black Prince before the hand over was relatively brief and we were on our way by 14:45, on our boat Erin. Heading south from the marina, Etruria Junction is just 10 minutes away, the left hand branch is the start of the Caldon Canal. We stuck with the Trent and Mersey and with it our first lock and the first of five in quick succession! Also at the junction was our first taste of Potteries architecture, the Etruscan Bone Mill. Sarah resumed her role as chief lock wheeler while Edward enjoyed standing on deck with the skipper.
The scenery through this part of Stoke-On-Trent is distinctly urban and not somewhere we would like to stop for any length of time. The railway passes overhead the canal on a low, wide bridge which caused the skipper to duck!
A couple of bottle kilns sit by the side of the canal, a reminder of the industry for which this area is best known. After the hard work of the locks Edward and Sarah relaxed in the well deck, from which Edward fed some geese.

The canal winds its way out of Stoke and past the site of Hem Heath Colliery, the third deepest in the UK until its closure in 1993. It is just beyond here, on the outskirts of Trentham, that we moored for the night.

      D15 England - Stoke-on-Trent

      19. juli 2019, England ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Potteries, potteries, potteries. We made it to the land of potteries - Moorcroft, Portmeirion, Wedgewood and our new favourite - Emma Bridgewater.

You can’t come to this part of England and not make a pitstop to at least one of these very dynamic workplaces. It turned out, that we only made it to Emma’s place as time was against us, and there was plenty to see at that particular pottery - new wares, mini walled gardens, samples shop and a dainty tea house to boot! We ate one of our most delicious lunches so far off some of the most delicious poteeey we’ve used. The potato and onion soup, veggie and hommus sandwich and tomato mozzarella salad all tasted better than it would served on any other plate.

We paid a quick visit to the Italianate gardens of Trentham Estate, an expansive Capability Brown garden. The intense blue cornflower meadows, dandelion fairy sculptures and long vistas were just a few of the highlights. The huge swathes if perennial colour saw Anthony snap happy, once again.

That evening, we drove over to Alsager to visit some of Anthony’s old friends who fed and watered us well in their gorgeous little home full of life - children and a garden that’ll have you reeling with envy! Many strawberries were consumed in a very short timeframe.

We finally crashed at our picture perfect hotel at he back of a pub in the middle of the countryside- but not before we toasted the day with a glass or two of Malbec!

      Paddles and Potteries

      I går, England ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

This morning we had a steady stream of boats passing us heading north and only one heading south. This included a couple of fairly large ‘working boats’, old historic boats with large cargo holds at the front a small boatman’s cabin at the back and a beautiful sounding engine. Our first landmark this morning was the Wedgwood factory, just a minute after departure. A short while later we came to Trentham Lock (11 ft 11 inches) and a queue of boats! A working boat which had passed us a fair while earlier was chugging at the gates longing to be let in and another boat sat on the lock landing in front of us. Edward made friends with the 6 year old girl from the boat in front, Mia, (we think they live aboard with two adults, two young girls and two dogs!). He and Sarah helped with the gates and paddles for their passage.

By the time we made it into the chamber the best part of an hour had elapsed and a further three boats had joined the queue behind us. A damaged paddle gear complicated matters but as often happens a couple of crews behind us assisted and we were then soon on our way.

A steady cruise followed and we passed where we moored on our first night, not quite as peaceful as the building site opposite was in full swing. Moving through into Stoke-on-Trent the beauty of the canal slipped away behind us and we were faced with more and more graffiti, concrete and litter. At Stoke Bottom Lock, the first of five in the Stoke Flight (50 feet), we once again encountered a queue and the boats assumed the same order as before. This gave opportunity for Edward to play with Mia for a while. When it was our turn in the lock we were joined by the same crew as before. The lady from the boat behind said they had set off from Oxford, heading to Skipton to visit grandchildren!

Eventually we made it to the top and bade farewell to our assistants. We passed the Black Prince base and carried on North for half an hour before winding, much to Sarah’s relief as she did not fancy the Harecastle Tunnel! We moored at Middleport Pottery and explored their heritage trail, looking in buildings detailing the process which we all found interesting. Some views may be familiar to long term viewers of The Great Pottery Throw Down, as this is where it used to be filmed. Sadly we didn’t see the actual room.

Our return leg was pleasant in the late afternoon sunshine. We find ourselves just 5 minutes cruise away from the Black Prince base, moored with other boats. We have an early start to get our boat back by 9am, but at least we don’t have far to travel!

      Stalkers Cottage Day 1

      22. juni 2018, England ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Big sleep in after our long drive yesterday. Once we got going we drove to Cheadle to do a bit of shopping. While there we had a look at a church which is known as Pugin's Gem. Pugin is an architect who designed Big Ben and the interior of Westminster. The church was spectacularly colourful inside, quite different to most English churches. Afterwards we drove over to Alton where we went to a nice pub for a quiet drink in the sun. On the way home we found a local farmshop where we picked up some more supplies. Just down the road are the ruins of Croxden Abbey where we stopped for a quick look only (closing time)This is the Abbey we can see from our cottage and like Byland Abbey it was established by the Cistercian monks in the 12thC.Læs mere

      Heatwave

      28. juni 2018, England ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Last night the Met officially called it a heat wave in the UK. The weather has been bright and sunny since we arrived in Staffordshire with temperatures in the mid 20s. The news is full of parboiled Brits at the seaside and with their feet in ponds. We are are quite enjoying the mild sunny days ourselves.
Quiet day, washing clothes and preparing for our move to Cambridge tomorrow. Highlight of lunch at Denstone Farm Shop. There are quite a few of these farm shops around and as you would expect their quality varies. Generally though they're nicer than a regular town cafe. We've been trying to buy our eggs from the free range roadside stands. The best were in the Yorkshire Dales where we bought a dozen eggs, all huge and all double yokers. It was amazing and we'll no doubt be talking about it for years!! Very happy that Damian has arrived safely and is staying with his friend Ali in Maidenhead. On Sunday he's training up to Cambridge to meet us for the week.

      Derby and Bakewell

      25. juni 2018, England ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Had a few dramas returning our hire car but won't bore you! Happily set out for Bakewell after leaving Derby and we were planning on having a famous Bakewell Tart. Sadly, when we realised they were full of jam we changed our minds and set about a brief exploration of the town. Bakewell is another market town located on the River Derwent. (nothing to do with the lakes district though) It was a busy market day, people everywhere but a friendly vibe. Visited another ancient church with remnants of earlier buildings dating from the 9th century. The stones were etched with symbols including the ancient staffordshire knot which adorned what is left of a cross in the church grounds. Astonishing antiquities which really link you to the past and the people that lived in these parts, maybe some our forebears!! Homeward bound through lovely farmland we spotted a dairy which used raw milk. Col had an icecream and me a delicious coffee. You could really taste the difference. Final stop was Ashborne, a pretty place with a Sainburys. Home with our stash of goodies and a pile of vegies and Cod for tea.Læs mere

      Stalkers Day 2

      23. juni 2018, England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Another big sleep in as we are still finding it hard to keep up the pace. We are trying to slow it all down a bit. Around lunch time we drove to the market town of Uttoxeter. There was a market in the main street selling local food and crafts.
We then drove to an area where we were told there wa a famous cafe and walk. We stopped at the Ramblers Retreat for lunch. Quite good.
After lunch we went on a scenic walk from the cafe. Unfortunately we found we can go the wrong way even when walking. When we got back from what was a very nice walk, we looked at the map and realised we had gone on a different walk to that intended. Hope we'll have time to do the "actual" walk later on.
On the way back we stopped at the town of Alton where there was a beer festival and market in the main street. There was another Pugin church here which was very beautiful and less decorative than the one in Cheadle. The priest there is Vietnamese and he told us how his family had escaped Vietnam in the 80's. Couldn't help thinking what a huge change in his circumstances and how life had evolved it's course for him. The church, monastery and castle are now owned by the church and the castle is used to accommodate disadvantage kids for holiday respite. All good and interesting stuff!

      Leek and the Peak District

      27. juni 2018, England ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Our day out today was a trip to Leek and around the Peak District
Leek is a Market town that is interesting without being particularly exciting. Most of the buildings date from the 17th and 18th century. It was worth a two hour walk around.
We then drove up through Blackshaw Moor into the Peak District National Park. Taking whatever backroads we could find we visited Longnor (a pretty little village), Flash (the highest village in England), Upper Hulme, and a number of other impossibly cute villages in unbelievably beautiful countryside. On the way home we stopped at the Manifold Inn in the Manifold Valley for a very nice dinner and a well earned drink.
Continuing on we took a "short cut" that took us along a road that got narrower and narrower as we went along until we were eventually opening farm gates every 500m to get to the other end. Well worth the drive as the valley views were amazing.

      Stalkers Day 3

      24. juni 2018, England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Fantastic day today. We walked about a mile down the valley to Croxden Abbey and joined an open garden route around the tiny little hamlets of Great Gate and Croxden. We paid at St Giles church where we were given a cup of tea and cake before our arduous adventure. On we trudged through the prettiest gardens in the world.........and all around the abbey. The abbey is now located on the property of a large and prosperous farm whose garden was unfortunately not open. But we peeked over the stone wall and eden appeared before our eyes. So elegant, tranquil and simple. The colours of an English spring are so wonderful; purples, pinks yellows blues reds orange and every shade thereof. And the perfume as you walk along, even from the fields and hedges is so delightful. Staying in the countryside has really given us a sense of nature's bounty and the silence all around is very relaxing. The historical towns are exceptional but the rural landscapes are sublime. It was nice to talk to some of the gardeners too. Understandably, they're a relaxed lot.
Dinner at the Raddle Inn. Better this time.
