      Kodiak adventures

      September 21, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Today we get up early again, 5:30am as we have to be a the wharf for 6:40. We met folks on the way to Kalalau trail that said they had a great day on a Kodiak raft. We signed up as we were still in the shuttle to the Napali coast 😉.

We get there, sign the you may die waver and meet our crew. Captain Shawn and Mate BJ are going to take us out on our adventure.

The captain explains the rules of the boat and how to be safe. We need to hold on for this ride as we are sitting on the inflatable sides of the boat while holding two different ropes. We even have a third rope for our feet that we also need to use in case we let go of the other two.

We start the adventure going out to the ocean. The waves are pretty big already. The captain had warned us that this is the warmup part. We will see bigger stronger waves on the way back as the day progresses and the winds pick up waves 🌊.

We ride for a while until we see a pod of dolphins. They are still sleeping; they swim in their sleep turning off half of their brain at a time. There are little cute baby dolphins as well. We see a couple of the roll out of the water.

We keep going. I am glad we have the ropes, without them we would be flying of the Kodak. The waves are bigger than I imagined. I am however enjoying every moment. I am in front and have the best view. The downside is that I also have the most bumps but it’s not that bad.

The captain brings us in caves which only the kodiaks are small enough to fit. This is so cool, the captain is pretty good at keeping us away from the rocks while allowing us to get some good photos.

After the caves, we head to the Napali coast. This is we just finished hiking. We get to see where we were from a different perspective. The view is quite impressive. Now we are the tourists looking at the hikers on the beach. Sorry guys.

We turn back from here and head to a beach for some snorkeling and some lunch. The water is pretty murky so we see some fish but only when pretty close. After our lunch, BJ takes us on a walk explaining that this beach was a sacred place for Hawaiians at the time. They had rituals of dance and chanting. The shape of the rock cliff made good reverberation for singing.

We head back to port, on the way back we catch different types of waves. The most pleasant ones were the large rolling ones where we feel like we are on a roller coaster. The small choppy ones are harder on the back as the boat keeps hitting them hard slapping them. At one point the wind picks up so much that I’m sure we are all going to fly off the boat. “Hold on tight“ is what the captain tells us. I oblige.

We make it all to the wharf, no one lost to sea. We thank our crew and head back to our resort. We get some things for a dinner on our patio. I got some Ahi poke style. It was really good.

      Salt Pond Beach Park

      August 3, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

Captain Andy's Na Pali Sunset Sail

      October 5, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

We had to get to Port Allen for 2pm for our Napali Coast sunset tour, we still had about an hour to play with so we had a look through some towns, Waimea and Hanapepe, dropped into a shop to get sunscreen and some water and stopped in at a little taco stand on the side of the road. It was colourful and cute so thought why not? Oh my goodness, such a good choice! It was so cheap and the food was amazing! Ben was pretty chuffed and we even topped up our order because we wanted more.
We made it to the port in time and got ready for our cruise, we had to leave our shoes there, Ben was slightly worried about his pluggers, and on we jumped. The crew were lovely and there were only maybe 40 people? So not too busy and easy to grab a seat. We got a good spot out the back with some shade and facing the coastline of Kauai. The views were spectacular! Most of the photos are on my actual camera but I haven't transferred them over yet, they also won't do it justice, but it was an awesome afternoon. Once we spun around to head back the bar was open and food was ready, all included, we had just a couple of 'sneaky tikis', so good. The captain turned the engines off and we sailed a good part of the way back as we watched the sun set. Once we got back and collected our shoes, we headed back to the hotel via a few stores, including Safeway. We've been trying to track down dip, like French onion or corn relish etc. Nope, it's hummus, lots of varieties of hummus or this weird, non refrigerated goop in a jar. Bah! We bought some snacks for the next few days, but no dip!

    • Day 6

      Waimea

      March 9, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

After a good night's sleep John was reenergized and ready to explore. I'm not sure why but he has insisted that I do all the driving, which is very unusual. Today we drove nearly an hour southwest to one of the highlights of Kauai and a favourite spot of ours....Waimea Canyon (16 km long, 3 km wide and 3000 feet deep). Driving the 30 km up to the canyon on a narrow, winding road is part of the adventure. Waterfalls, red soil and scenic valleys dot the landscape. At one of the lookouts there was an Hawaiian man dressed in traditional garb who was providing information about the canyon as well as Hawaiian history and culture. We had a picnic lunch and were joined by some curious chicks. This time we didn't do any hiking because the area was muddy from the heavy rainfall this past week. We were fortunate to have such a beautiful day.Read more

      Eleele

      March 8, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

I was getting too comfortable staying at the resort every day so it was time to venture out. I decided to head West to look for the setting sun. My goal was to find Glass Beach and a black sand beach, which I never did find. I ended up at Salt Pond Park just as the sun was going down. This park was filled with local young people and their coolers of beer and families with their BBQs. It was a very happy place for a Wednesday evening. The hour drive there was pretty and scenic but driving back in the dark was less exciting. The 2 lane road is heavily trafficked, narrow, winding, and hilly with a max speed of 80 km/h but I seemed to be the only one obeying the law.

Some observations from my first week in Kauai. They drive fast and get in accidents which can potentially shut down the main highway for hours. Two MVA deaths this week. Also two helicopter crashes this week with fatalities. Groceries are very expensive. For example, chicken breasts $10/pound; romaine lettuce $4; cucumbers $2/pound; tomatoes $4/pound; white mushrooms $7/pound; a small bunch of green onions $2.50; and one yellow onion $2. I've been eating mostly pasta and stir fry, although Canadian farm-raised salmon was a steal at $8/pound. The locals are very polite and friendly, as are the other tourists I've spoken with. Kauai is lush and green so it goes without saying that there will be rain....fortunately most of it has been in the evening and night. The temperatures have been 24-27 during the day and 19 at night.

As I was finishing my packing the night before my departure, John had a sudden attack of "aloha envy" and asked me to find him a flight to Kauai. Once I arrived here it took several attempts but I eventually got lucky and was able to get him a return flight at a reasonable cost. He arrived safely this evening on the same grueling flight itinerary I was on.....tired but happy to be in Kauai.
