Die letzten Tage auf Hawaii

Die letzten beiden Tage auf Hawaii haben wir ganz entspannt ausklingen lassen. Gestern sind wir nochmal durch Waikiki geschlendert und haben den Nachmittag dort am Strand verbracht.
Heute sind wir nochmal an einen Strand, an dem man gut schnorcheln kann, gefahren.
Der Strand liegt direkt am Elektrizitätswerk, welches mit Meerwasser gekühlt wird. Dadurch ist das Wasser hier ein paar Grad wärmer und lockt viele Meereslebewesen an, auch Delfine sollen sich hier regelmäßig blicken lassen.
Delfine waren auch da, leider jedoch zu weit draußen zum hinschwimmen. Dafür haben wir relativ viele Fische, 2 oder 3 Schildkröten und kurz eine Robbe gesehen. Das war nochmal ein toller Abschluss für Hawaii. Morgen fliegen wir weiter nach Los Angeles.Read more

Canyon fill -similar to a bath tub
Liners and water absorbers
Have environmental controls to make sure everything is contained
Mainly takes the ash from H-Power and anything that can’t get burnt
Has a storm water control system
Been here since 1989 and about 20 years left until capacity but is being recommended to shut down in 2028

Very few sights left for landfills

Old landfills can be created into a park, golf course, etc.
- still need to be monitored after closing for around 30 years
Trash and ash are kept separated

I was surprised at how different the landfill was different to the ones I have seen back on the mainland. It makes me wonder why we don't burn trash for energy. I understand that it is probably more expensive at first, but I know it would help with energy production and reducing carbon emissions.Read more

Trying the McDonalds Lobster Roll

Hawaii was testing the McDonalds lobster roll, and we got ours from the McDonalds in Kapolei (Thanks Randy). The verdict, a 4 of 10 in my book. At $9.99, I expected more flavor. It needed more mayo and more spices. BTW, our total bill was $62 and change, a record for me and Randy.Read more

Unfortunately I was bedridden most of today with the night bringing little improvement of my sickness. So after sipping tea, taking DayQuil, and watching Burnt I finally dragged myself out of bed and to the pool around three. After ordering the tiniest, most expensive caprese salad I have ever seen, I sat by the pool watching a large family play a very weird rendition of volleyball. About an hour later we came back up to the hotel room only to go back down and sit by the beach to watch our final sunset in Ko Olina. After lots of laughs and some beautiful pictures we called it a night and crashed in our hotel room with some yummy leftovers to get us through the night.Read more

Today we woke up got all packed up and brought all our bags down before 9 am. We left our bags checked in downstairs and took the bikes out in search of some fresh fruit. There were two farmer's markets that looked promising as we ventured out. The closer one only took 10 minutes to get to but after a quick look around we realized there wasn't much to see. We then decided to go to the further one and made the haul up a very long hill to find a much bigger, better market. As the sellers started breaking down their tents we quickly found some rambutans to satisfy our fresh fruit needs. We then got a nice pineapple drink and some delicious Pho French dip from an authentic Vietnamese food tent. As we sat enjoying our food a very kind man came up and gave William four free papayas that he said would be ready in two days. We then coasted back down to our hotel to find the rest of the Messner gang waiting. We piled all our luggage into the small rented sedan and took off towards the Ko Olina Marriott. In another 40 minutes we arrived at the beautiful hotel with perfect lagoons lined up along the coast. We ate a late lunch at Longboards and then watched the sunset before drifting off to sleep.Read more

Today we decided to hang around the hotel and participate in the many events that Marriott was hosting. In the morning William and I went and looked at the tide pools that had only recently be filled and therefore didn't have much in the way of wildlife. We made our way over to the second lagoon to go snorkeling. We saw lots of little spotted pufferfish and many other vibrantly colored fish including the Hawaiian state fish. After drying off we headed back to our hotel and prepared ourselves for the hula hoop competition. Unfortunately none of us won any of the rounds despite my constant assurance of how good I was. We then headed to the soccer game where we found that the only one there was Jimmy, a friendly employee who we quickly befriended. A few minutes later a family showed up and we proceeded to school them at soccer. After showering we headed back down to watch the fire dancing and even saw a warrior climb a palm tree. As the sun set we made our way over to Longboards to eat a lovely meal. Once our food had settled we went night swimming in the hotel pool which included sneaking up the water slide. Luckily the water was turned off yet that didn't stop a few injuries from occurring while trying to reach the top of the very dark tube. It turns out going down a dry water slide with a wet bathing suit on isn't nearly as thrilling as I thought.Read more
