Märchenwald und Finanzkapital

Früh Wanderung durch den Märchenwald hinterm Haus. Redwoods. Tour durch die Grundstücke eines Finanzhais, der nach und nach den Ort kauft: Steve. Privat chill und nett, beruflich ein Tyrann, der sich alles unterwirft. Tom, der mich sehr an Christoph erinnert, hat bei ihm mal in Nevada nahe der Bonanza Drehsets gearbeitet, daher viel original Ponderosascheiße im Ort. Hat auf Bali ein Dorf gesehen das ihm gefiel. Gekauft. Container nachhause. Wiederaufgebaut. Vermietet. Macht tatsächlich Geld damit.Read more

Lotus fahren!

Heute bin ich im Lotus (!!!) durch kurvige Strecke am Wasser nach Bolinas geheizt. Die Rennmaschine klebt auf der Straße, egal wie brutal du in die Kurven gehst. Adrenalin high.
Frühmorgendliche Wanderung in den Bergen durch ein romantisches Märchenwäldchen, zurück mit einem öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel das ziemlich filmreif ist. Kojoten getroffen.
Rüber in eine closed gate community an einer Lagune, zu Besuch bei einem Freund von Dani, der den Betrieb von Software für Wallstreet Trader handelt. Sehr netter Typ. Dort Standup Paddel Tour über die Lagune. Abendbrot mit ihm und seiner Motorrad Gang: u.a. ein alter irischer Apple Ingenieur der ersten Stunde, nächtlicher Spaziergang an der Lagune mit Dan.Read more

Strand, Oakland, Castro

Früh am Strand einen langen Spaziergang gemacht, danach Schattenboxen. Kurz schwimmen - aua. Avocadotoast mit Räucherlachs und Gemüsezwiebel. Fahrt nach Oakland über Panoramastraße, Berkeley, Richmond Bridge. In sehr schlechter Hood (Strasse mit lauter Obdachlosen in Autos etc.) KINGS Gym - die Herkunft des großartigen André Ward. Dort einen netten Masterboxer kennengelernt, der mal in Las Vegas mit einem Bekannten aus D einen Kampf hatte. Dann über die Baybridge (der Hammer!) nach Castro in San Francisco. 5 dicke alte Schwule lassen sich von asiatischen Frauen und Latinas die Füsse machen (leider kein Foto). Hundewaschsalon (leider unscharf). Heim über Golden Gate Bridge. Massive Steaks vom Grill, das beste was ich je gegessen habe. Bauchweh. Dan packt uns ein Riesen-Fresspaket für die Weiterreise.Read more

Bodega to Bolinas

We rode through dry dairy farmland away from the ocean out of Bodega Bay. In Tomales we chatted with some cyclists from Petaluma as we enjoyed our usual treat of ice cream. The road took us back to the coast toward Point Reyes Station, and after a fun ride through a eucalyptus forest we turned toward Bolinas, as we had heard it was an interesting town off the beaten path - they don't even have a sign on the road to the town since locals kept taking it down. On the main street we chatted with colourful locals, and a past trans-USA bike tourer named Ethan even bought us a beer for having come so far on our bikes. We camped close to town, so we were able to catch both a beautiful sunset and the calm morning sea in this town fiercely protected by liberal environmentally-concious citizens.Read more

"Bolinas - The town that didn't want company" as said by the New York Times and almost everyone else who knows about this place. Its a weird community that seems like its stuck in the 1970s with grey haired hippy surfers and all round general funny characters including a hobo looking guy with a pet pigeon who traveled on his head! It's really funny seeing houses that start at 1.5 million dollars with rusting 1990s Toyotas sitting outside, either the people want to fit in with the towns image or no one sells their houses here and have owned it since the 70s :D also they have people from the town taking down every sign leading to the place on the main road so not too many people go there

We got flagged down by a older guy clearing out an art gallery to help him load massive paintings onto the roof of his truck who ended up talking to us for ages about everything - American politics, the Spanish civil war, the azores and that he had lived there since 1973. We walked up and down the main street and past the grand Hotel which is some guys 2 bedroom house which is basically the only place to stay in town and left feeling quite bemused than this weird place exists only 20 miles from San Francisco

Home Again

We have arrived home again after nearly five months of travel. It has been an interesting time. We've been in some widely divergent settings and met an interesting mileau of personalities. Our first stop on coming back to the coast was at Nancy' mother's retirement place in Pacific Grove. She was pleased that she was our first stop, but less than pleased by the souvenir we'd brought her from Holland. (see photo)

Nancy and I spent our last night on the road back in the El Mono motel in Lee Vining. Fun that we began our life of travel there over two years ago. Earlier that day we parked just outside of Yosemite National Park and pulled everything out of the camper, cleaned it top to bottom, and put it all back. I'm sure we got the stink-eye from more than a few people driving as they drove by.

It feels good to be back home. We arrived home to a coffee table full of gifts from our Home Exchange partners. Birgitt left us a painting of our yard that really captures the feeling of the home. Really nice. We won't hesitate to set up an exchange again. It has been a great experience.

So. One trip comes to a close and in two weeks another begins. Augie and I fly to Ho Chi Minh City on the 10th of October. We'll spend a few days there getting used to the time change, visiting a college friend of his, and picking up our motorbikes. A description of our route can be found here:

Fantastic! Glad you are home, and your haus swap worked well. Take me along for Vietnam. Thank you! I am enjoying your travelogues JHHans! Glad you are home? Yes, yes, and yes!! Regretably, I lost contact with a Thai architect I worked with in Seattle many years ago. She went home to start a practice in Thailand. Definitely, Vietnam and Thailand are on my list. Go slow, soak up the knowledge, and enjoy the ride ~
