    Providence

June 11, 2017 in the United States

Headed into Providence after a good breakfast at the hotel. Garmin was under pressure with roadworks. Also didn't seem to like the address for State Capitol. I later realised that there are two 82 Smith Streets in Providence. Only one is the Capitol. Guess which one I put into Garmin!
First stop was Benefit Street, historical area. Old houses and churches. Went to see Brown University. Went into Episcopalian church during mass. Vestments, Incence, singing. Memories of the early 1960s. Interior very Catholic too.
Rhode Island & Providence Plantation was established by Roger Williams. He had been thrown out of Massachussets. He believed that power derived from the people, not from the King or even from God. He was one of the first to advocate the separation of church and state. The charter granted by Charles II, allowed for freedom of conscience for papists, atheists, Jews, Turks, and Quakers in RI.
Visited the State Capitol, impressive for a state the land-size of Co. Limerick. Saw the preparations for Portugal Day parade, colourful, brass bands, Benfica & Sporting floats. Went to Macy's to benchmark shirts and jackets. Also handbags. Tasty lunch at the food court. Philly Cheesesteak and Bourbon Chicken. More fine dining!
Very hot & humid. Record heat wave is forecast for next week.....hotter than this!!??!!
Walked over to see the Arcade, the world's first indoor shopping mall, 1928.
Back at the hotel, I sat out front on one of the Adirondack chairs to read. A frivolous pot-boiler, Stiglitz on the coming demise of the Euro.

    October wanderings

October 7, 2017 in the United States

Bonus warm weather made a swim and a beach walk be a great start to the 3 day weekend. Followed by poor seafood at George's of Galilee. I remember going there about 30 years ago with Helen and it was rubbish then too. Nice sunset there though.

    Good morning!

July 2, 2017 in the United States

Today's projected high temp has fallen from 90 to 88, which seems so very much better. Also, the bag of extras that we sent back to Winchester apparently weighed six pounds. So, with pounds and two degrees off our backs, today will be a bit easier. Plus, I picked up a coffee last night to go, so I got to have my morning cup (cold... not a problem) while Nate sleeps after all. All auspicious signs! Three days and 43 miles to go.Read more

    Over the border

August 15, 2016 in the United States

After our shooting expedition, we jumped the border into Rhode Island and went to visit Providence State House. The B&B is a beautifully restored building with lovely rooms and after checking in we wandered into town. Despite the continued heat, Providence is rather beautiful. As with everywhere else in the US however, it is full of Dunkin' Donuts! Long drive tomorrow to Lake Placid for some fun in the Olympic park...if queues allow.Read more

    RWP Zoo

July 1, 2017 in the United States

Patting armadillos is cool. This is a great little (maybe medium) zoo. The animals are close, but not in sad little enclosures. The bear (a moon bear... he has a big white crescent on his chest) looked bored, but maybe he was just hot.

    Brown University Area

July 1, 2017 in the United States

Whole pretty neighborhood of historic houses. Anyone from Brown know what the deal is with the giant blue bear? Kind of nice to listen to the guy leaning on the bear's leg playing guitar. He plays better than he sings, though.

    Warwick RI to Attleboro MA

July 1, 2017 in the United States

Not our fanciest lodgings, but it was on our route, and that's pretty much all we care about. We did veto Motel 6's, but other than that, we're not choosy. No coffee in the room, though, which will make the hour or so that I'm up before Nate somewhat less enjoyable. Clouds came in this afternoon providing respite from the sun, and the northern part of RI was a nice largely residential walk. Attleboro is, well, less picturesque. But we're close enough to Winchester that my parents are en route to meet us for dinner. We'll send a few items back with them: raincoats, bathing suits, and the iPad, which is the single item I would not bring if I had to pack for this trip again. The bigger screen is definitely nice, but not worth the weight. Tracker says 17.7 miles today but I think that's a bit over. The route mapped out to 14, and our only extra was walking around the zoo.Read more
