      The colorful "dirt hills"

      October 13, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

      ----

🇬🇧 We wake up very early to see the sunrise at the Painted Hills. That means getting out of our sleeping bags at 5:30 am and taking down the tent in 0°C (32°F) weather. It's cold!

We motivate ourselves with the prospect of a good cup of coffee, and Carola wants to try a Pumpkin Spice Latte - it's supposed to be a thing here. 😁

The sunrise is splendid! The colors of the Painted Hills are absolutely crazy. Green, blue, red, yellow. They are remnants from prehistoric times. Red, for example, signifies a very moist period with lots of trees. The hills aren't even rocks; they really seem to be just "dirt." A sign that says "Don't hurt the Dirt" provides a fitting reminder! 😅

We hit the road again and set out to find the next small coffee hut. It's going to be a Pumpkin Spice Latte, but Felix is skeptical and prefers to stick with a cappuccino. The Latte is sweet, very sweet...

What's intriguing, though, is the taste - we can't recall a flavor that represents autumn. In Germany, it's usually straight into the Christmas cookie season. But the Pumpkin Spice Latte tastes exactly like how I would describe autumn. A precursor to Christmas, if only it had a little less sugar!

Drive from Bend to Hells Canyon Dam

      September 30, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Left Gail’s house around 8:30 on 97, 126, 26, 7, and finally 86 to Cooperfield campground. We stopped at Painted Hills which was somewhat uneventful. Then Sheep Rock also was uneventful but there was a visitor center there that looked interesting but was closed. Blue Basin was very nice. We saw Eroded hills and fossil replicas on a short 1 mile hike. Then we had lunch at the Squeeze Inn in John Day. Great burger!! Then onto Baker City to buy groceries. We passed the Interpretive Center outside of Baker City that also looked interesting but was also closed. We drove the last part in the dark. On the way though we saw a bear running along the road. Got to the campground about 8:15. Set up our tents in the dark.Read more
