The Spanish Steps

Named after the Spanish embassy, this iconic location is recognizable from many cinematic classics (including Roman Holiday with Audrey!!)

It was a common destination for British aristocrats in the 19th century. British poet John Keats actually lived next to the steps and died there from tuberculosis.

The fountain at the foot of the steps is named "Sinking Boat fountain" and was built by Bernini. It is powered by an ancient aquaduct (as many of the fountains are in Rome) - but here the water pressure is so low that a high rising fountain would not have worked. Hence, the sinking boat design filled with water.

The immaculate conception column

This beautiful column was built to celebrate the Immaculate Conception dogma following its proclamation by Pope Pius IX in 1854.

Every year on December 8th (feast day), this piazza hosts festivities in its honor.

Aquaduct Ruins

We got a glimpse of original aquaducts while exploring today (~2000 years old!)

Quick highlights thanks to Rick Steves:

- Romans considered good drinking water essential to health
- Water was transferred in from up to 50 miles away via these aquaducts (all by gravity)
- Today, Rome still gets its water from mineral springs - Some of which are naturally frizzy! (Frizzante)

This last point was especially interesting to us since every eatery we've been to in Rome has offered water as still or frizzante.

Piazza Colonna

A column carved as propaganda depicting emperor Marcus Aurelius defeating barbarians at the Danube river.

After Rome's fall, the original statue of Marcus atop the column was replaced with a statue of St. Paul who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to Rome.

Piazza di Monte Citorio

The Italian Parliament

In front of the parliament building is one of many Egyptian obelisks that were shipped to Rome after conquering Egypt. This specific obelisk was taken by Roman emporer Augustus after defeating Mark Antony and Cleopatra.

Fun fact: this is the only obelisk in Rome still capped with a pre-Christian ornament.
