After a long flight with 2 layovers and absurd flight delays, I finally made it 🙌🏼

I spent some time getting lost on the public transit today. It's so easy here. All you need is one ticket and it will get you access to all necessary forms of transit - bus, tram, and subway - for the chosen length of time!Read more

After settling into my hotel, I took a couple tram rides and a walk around the city to orient myself. In the process, I ran into a mass of protestors chanting things I couldn't understand - other than Zelensky - So I assume it had something to do with the war in Ukraine.

Edit: confirmed - this was a civilian rally to show Ukrain that Czechia stands with them.

  • Hotel Breakfast

    March 5, 2022 in Czech Republic ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

After 16 hours of travel followed by an exciting night of getting lost in Prague (I can't tell you how many times I got on the wrong tram), the hotel bed was heaven. I'm staying at Vienna House in Andel for the week -a quaint yet classy hotel next to a major shopping district. The amenities are so nice (there's even a steam room!), and the breakfast was fantastic! A variety of cheeses (marinated, peppered, and some even made with nuts), breads, and an impressive assortment of breakfast meats.

New thing of the morning: a warm, date jam filled dumpling topped with cinnamon and brown sugar 😋

It's only been a couple days, but one thing that has stood out to me (both from seeing them in person, and from local media publications) is the frequency and intensity of demonstrations here. It's liberating.Read more

  • Narodni Museum

While wandering, I ran into the Narodni muzeum (national museum). My favorite exhibit covered the lives and influences of 4 famous Czech composers who shaped the image of Czech culture all over the world - Smetana, Dvorak, Janecek, and Bohuslav Martinu.Read more

  • Folklore Garden

    March 5, 2022 in Czech Republic ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

The organizers of the program scheduled an awesome cultural show at Folklore Garden. It was so much fun, and a great way to get to know folks on the trip! Not surprisingly, I was the only one who reserved a vegetarian meal. But I took a picture of what someone's meat dish looked like for record. LolRead more

  • Karluv Most (Charles Bridge)

    March 6, 2022 in Czech Republic ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

A landmark Stone Bridge that connects Prague's Old and New Towns. Along the sides of the bridge are 30 statues (15 on each side) of saints - most made out of limbstone, one made out of granite, and one made out of copper.

Fun fact from the guide today - construction of the bridge began in 135797531 (August 7th, 1357 at 5:31 am).

Today was heavy. We went to visit Theresienstadt concentration camp - a sad but necessary reminder of what happened in our not-too-distant history.
