The Trevi fountain was dedicated to Pagan gods and is one of the few fountains in Rome that is not round.
You're supposed to throw a coin with your right hand over your shoulder (usually right shoulder) so you have good luck and return to Rome.

I read that if you throw in 1 coin, you will return to Rome; throw 2 coins, you will fall in love with an attractive Italian; throw 3 coins, you will marry the person that you met. Another tidbit is that since 2007, the money in the Trevi Fountain has been used to support good causes. [Sharon]
