  • Post Box

    June 26, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

I was able to give a small history/culture lesson about the British and the post boxes. If you look closely, you'll see 3 parts that get added to the front of the post box. The 'R' on the right stand for Rex (which means "King"). The 'G' is for King George and the 'VI' is because he was the 6th George. King George VI was Queen Elizabeth II's father. George was his regnal name. His birth name was Albert (George was one of his middle names). Each post box is marked based on the current monarch. That means that this post box was put there between 1936 and 1952 (the years he was King).Read more

  • Scottish Dinner Event

    June 26, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

We went to a restaurant that put on a "traditional Scottish evening" for us. There was singing, bagpipes, haggis, and other amazing food. The kids talked me into (guilted and pressured, really) trying the haggis, so I did!
We didn't get back to the hotel until after 10pm, but it was worth it. We leave tomorrow at 3:30am, so we're not getting much sleep tonight!

  • Security

    June 27, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

We made it through security! Only one item got flagged (regular size tube of toothpaste). Fortunately, they did an additional test/check on it and eventually cleared it. They were flagging a LOT of bags, so we were fortunate that it was only one person.Read more

  • Chinatown

    June 27, 2025 in England ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

We're going to see the major sights of London tomorrow, so today we did some of the places that won't be on the guided tour. First, we went to Chinatown!

  • Piccadilly Circus

    June 27, 2025 in England ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Next, we went to Piccadilly Circus. It has huge electronic billboards that reminded me of (a much much much) smaller version of Times Square. In the fountain is Anteros (a figure in Greek mythology).

  • Swiss Center

    June 27, 2025 in England ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

The Swiss Center used to be in Leicester Square, but it has moved. However, the display of the 26 shields of the cantons that make up the Swiss Confederacy, and the Glockenspiel are still there. When the clock on the glockenspiel goes from 59 to 00, there is about a 2 second pause. Sam said it was to emphasize that the minute has started.Read more

  • Man in the Clock

    June 27, 2025 in England ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

There is a clock outside of Paddington Station with a very unique clock. It looks like there is a man inside the clock that is painting the hands of the clock, then squeegeeing it away to draw the new time. Very cool to see!Read more

  • Picnic

    June 27, 2025 in England ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

We didn't plan to see this. However, we decided to check it out. According to what I found online, it is about the "internationally beloved hybrid characters who have travelled the world spreading messages of love, acceptance, and adventure, and play host to a party. "Read more

  • London Walking Tour

    June 28, 2025 in England ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

We had a guided tour of London to see some of the main sights. On our way to the first, we passed Hays Galleria, which had a very interesting statue in it. This was right by the HMS Belfast. The HMS stands for His/Her Majesty's Ship. When King Charles III ascended to the throan, the UK bagain the process of changing everything from Her Majesty / Queen's _____ to His Majesty / King's _____. There are exceptions, but our guide said many of the names do change.Read more

  • Tower Bridge

    June 28, 2025 in England ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

This bridge is often called "London Bridge", however, it is actually called "Tower Bridge". The middle section folds up when boats need to sail through. We've heard from two separate people that in the 70s, a coach didn't see the stop signal to alert him that the bridge was opening. According to both people, the bridge had already started to open, so the coach hit the gas and jumped over the gap. Everyone arrived safely.
I tend to believe the story, because if it was a fake and/or cautionary tale, it would not have had a happy ending!

  • St. Paul's Cathedral

    June 28, 2025 in England ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

We visited St. Paul's Cathedral. It has been used for Winston Churchill's funeral, Prince Charles (now King Charles III) and Princess Diana's wedding, Queen Victoria's jubilee celebration, as well as the Thanksgiving Jubilees (Silver, Golden, Diamond, and Platinum) and birthday celebrations (80th and 90th) for Queen Elizabeth II.Read more

  • Elizabeth Tower

    June 28, 2025 in England ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

This Elizabeth Tower is often called "Big Ben". Big Ben is actually the name of the biggest bell in the tower. This was amazing to see!
