  • Neuschwanstein Castle (Part 3)

    June 22, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

This is from the Marienbrücke (Marien Bridge). It was another 15 minutes of walking uphill, but the view is amazing. It's one of my favorite views in Europe. I double-checked with our guide Wolfgang to make sure I was going to the right spot. He confirmed and said he wasn't going to tell the other group about it because of how much walking it is.
The bridge itself sways slightly, and the wooden boards bend slightly as well. They reopened it in 2022, so we knew it was deemed safe recently!

I didn't take the photos on this page (I got them from the internet), but I wanted to give you an idea of what the bridge looked like, how high we were, and how far we walked to get there. Remember, we started our trek about a 35 min walk (uphill, of course) below the castle!
To see where we were standing, first find the green bus on the left side of the map. Then, look for where the white line meets the blue line (river), which is where the bridge was located.

  • Neuschwanstein Castle (Part 4)

    June 22, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

We did a 40 min guided tour of the castle. Ludwig II never had people over, but it would have been a great place to host a royal event. We weren't allowed to take pictures inside except for the kitchen. The walls were mostly decorated with scenes from Wagner operas. The throne room had an amazing chandelier. The throne area had the 12 apostles (6 on each side) and 6 holy kings of Europe. The castle was very progressive. It had some things that were powered by early versions of batteries, central heating, and 2 telephones that people could use to talk to each other in the castle.Read more

  • Lake Lucerne Boat Trip

    June 23, 2024 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

We took a boat ride around Lake Lucerne. We were so lucky with the weather. When we looked at the 10 day forecast last week, it was supposed to rain the entire day. Thankfully, no rain!

So, originally, we had a flight from Zurich, Switzerland, to Philly with a layover in Dublin, Ireland. The Dublin to Philly flight got canceled. Instead of making us fly to Dublin, they are letting us stay in Zurich and have rebooked us on a flight *tomorrow* that goes directly from Zurich to Philly. They gave each of us our own room at the airport Hyatt hotel, and meal vouchers for lunch & dinner tonight, and breakfast tomorrow.
The flight is American Airlines 93 (the one tomorrow, not the one today). It leaves here at 11:45am, and gets to Philly at 2:30pm.
