We walked here to get lunch before we left.
Once we returned to the church we said goodbye to our guest city host who was returning to New York. We then went into the church and found seats in the middle of the sanctuary. Jessica the City Director of CSM joined us for church. Three song leaders sung at the beginning and then we were invited to join in. Next wad the welcoming from a lady who was one of the churchs pastors. She welcomed our group as well as introduced the speaker another pastor, who was speaking because the main pastor was resting. She also held offering, the ushers would dismiss row by row to go arohnd the church and place their money in a pot which the pastor later blesses. She then read the scripture. The speaker talked about the story of the rich and poor man. After the service we went down to our rooms and picked up the last of our supplies.Read more
We walked to Ebenezers Coffee Shop to spend the rest of the time before church. There most of us got coffee and then we hung out in the outside sitting area. I had a salted caramel latte.
We then returned to the church and went to bed. This time we made sure the air condition was on in both rooms and also that both rooms were ready for the lights to be turned off. In the morning we woke up and had breakfast at 7:30 and then cleaned up our rooms and packed up the vans. Once we finished this we still had two hours before churched started so we decide to find a place to hang out.
Our leaders then surpised us by taking us out for ice cream. We went to park along the street, Calvin put our van in park but Greg still had his in reverse and the bumped Calvins van. Then they realized they were in a no parking zone. So we had to park in a parking lot. We got out and got Ice Cream. (I had White Chocolate Strawberry Ice Cream in a waffle cone.)
We debriefed along side the memorial our city read some scripture to us and then we broke up into small groups and shared our experiences and then prayed. After we shared we were allowed to explore the memorial, finally we took a group picture on the stairs of the monument.
We walked over this bridge were we could get some awesome pictures of the city and monuments.
Next we headed towards the Jefferson Memorial to debrief about the trip. We parked away from the memorial alongside the Potomac River. We go their before the other group so we were goofing off in the van making whale noises and watching a guy fish in the dark.
For dinner we went to this famous Washington DC eatery. It is in a busy part of town so we had trouble finding a parking spot. After cirling for five minutes we found a spot but it had a No Parking Sign, so we drove past but then realized it was only during the weekdays. So calvin backed the van down the street and parked. We were with the New York Guest Host so she did not know what to do when we got to the resteraunt so we just went in. They thought they found are reservation because they had one for 21 people (which was the size of group) but upon checking they said that was for a group called CSE, but thinking the just made a spelling error they sat us. But upon checking with the manager they realized they had missed our reservation. They said since we were already seated we could stay. The other group arrived about ten minutes later and ordered our food. We got sides of chilli fries and then could order a hotdog, hamburger, or half smoke, and then choose our toppings, most of us got chilli. We were going to go to the souvenir shop next door, but ran out of time.Read more
We returned to the church we were staying at upon our return our city host explained dinner. We wrote down our orders to make it easier on the waitstaff. We walked to the other church to get the vans.
We walked to the Capital from Eastern Market. We got there and sat on the stairs outfront of the Capital looking out over the mall. Josh gave a tour briefly from the steps to Calvin, Grant, Emily, and Kalah. Calvin wanted to know what block you had to push to open a trap door. After sitting on this steps in the bright sun we decided to begin walking back.
After completing the challenge of the Urban Plunge we meet up with Calvin and Gregs group. Jess showed Greg the picture of the homeless person we fed and it turns out they fed the exact same person a half sub.A few of them decided to go get coffee at a coffee shop. Meanwhile Liz looked around the Market and the rest of us just relaxed at a picnic table. Once everyone returned we realized we had two hours before we could return to the church so we began wondering how far we were from the capital building. We checked it was about 1.5 miles away, so Greg called Grant to get his opinion and see if their group would want to go to (The Capital was outside of the boundaries set by our city hosts.) Grant approved so we then met up with their group.Read more
