    Today, we bought a street car pass for $3.00, which gave you 24 hours of hop on, hop off use of the transport system in the city. Our first stop was only one of the 40 cemeteries in the city.
    In New Orleans, people are buried above ground primarily due to the city's high water table and below-sea-level location.Read more

    Lafayette's old part of town.
    We went to a historical village called Vermilionville.One of the old homes in Vermilionville.The homes were very small with large families living in them, so they put the stairs on the outside.How would you like a neighbour sitting with you ,while you do your business.This was the way you crossed a swamp, lake, or river in the past. Very clever !!Allan getting us across the water.Spanish moss hanging from the trees.1The Louisiana fox squirrelLiving history of the Acadian, Native American and Creole cultures. This lady was spinning cotton.After the cotton is spun, it is weaved into fabric.Another interesting fellow in the old school house.The French language was banned in schools. It was a very similar story to how the maori were treatedAnother amazing road bridge on the way to Lafayette.Strawberry salad and prawns for tea. Every meal is huge over here.

The building on the right is the old Rice Pub.Spending our last 2 nights in Beaumont.Quite a steep motorway ahead.Driving into Beaumont. Oil refinery on both sides of the motorway.Decided to go on an Alligator hunt at the Cattail Marsh. Had no luck.Cattail Marsh wetlands covers a 900 acre areaThis 24-foot, Dalmatian-spotted fire hydrant at the Fire Museum of Texas was donated by Walt Disney.World’s Largest Working Fire Hydrant. It was featured in the 101 Dalmatians movie.Memorial to the firefighters that lost their lives on 9/11Historical part of town in Beaumont. A lot of the area has been abandoned.Some abandoned buildings in the historic part of Beaumont.Rainbow Bridge in the Beaumont area. Made like this for a battle ship to pass underneath

    This morning, we left Lafayette and made our way to Beaumont for the last 2 nights of our trip. On the way, we took a detour and ended up in a small country town called Crowley. This little town in the middle of nowhere is the Rice Capital of America.

    Beaumont, Texas, is a coastal city in Southeast Texas, known for its rich history in the oil industry and its unique blend of Texas and Cajun cultures. It's located 90 miles east of Houston.    Read more

    This afternoon, we took a drive out to the countryside . We went to a pub that was recommended to us, where you can eat and drink and watch alligators and turtles from the deck. Once again, we met some interesting fun people at the pub.Read more

    The Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum is located in Beaumont, Texas, to commemorate the discovery of oil at the Spindletop Hill salt dome in Beaumont on Jan. 10, 1901. The discovery sparked an oil boom in Texas that continues today.
    At approximately 10:30 a.m. on January 10, 1901, while the Hamill brothers were attempting to free their drill from the crevice, the famous Lucas Gusher blew in. Oil sprayed more than 100 feet above the derrick for nine days until the well was capped.
    It was the greatest oil well ever seen. It was flowing 80,000 – 100,000 barrels per day.    Read more

    Stayed our last night in Beaumont, which is approximately 132km from Houston Airport. Of course, we had to check out a few more shops in Beaumont, as we had a lot of time to kill. I went to an outlet store called Ross, and Allan wanted to go back to the Tractor Supply Company . Also, we had to have one last look at a Buc-ee's before leaving the USA.Read more
