  • Fowey

A late start on the water after a quick shopping trip - needed a new hoover!
Weather is better i said, let's go to Fowey...another very wet bumpy trip but hopefully we are here ready for the sunshine tomorrow. On arrival we moored up on a bouy but after 1 hour of bouncing around we moved onto a more sheltered pontoon (we hope!). Very wet mooring up and Neil and Sue arrived 15 mins later - drowned rats comes to mind. They had sailed the passage over 6 hours - at least ours only took 2 hours!

  • Polruan

Great to wake up to some dry weather with the promise of some sunshine.
Dinghy launched and off we head for a walk around the headland. Fantastic views and an ice cream van on the coastal road - what more could we ask for?
A tour up the River towards Golant in the dinghy with some stunning scenery, before heading out to dinner at the yacht club with Neil and Sue.

  • St Mawes

One of best trips on Fino with lovely calm seas and sunshine. Eric decides he is going to catch supper so we slow down and drift for a while.
Dolphins 🐬 had more luck catching fish than we did and popped their heads up to say hello but were camera shy!
On arrival a fleet of square riggers were out in the bay-lovely to watch as we settled onto our bouy.
An hour later whi should arrive next door but Neil and Sue - celebrating their 39th Wedding Anniversary so a beer on shore was in order.

  • Day out on Percuil River

Canoe pumped up and off we set. A fairly strong breeze to start with against the tide but the good news was we knew we could just drift back when the tide turned.
As always, once we got up river, sadly a lot of boats just abandoned on the shore banks to rot but some stunning homes hidden away with superb views and their own jetty. Could we be moving again?😜
Relaxing on deck we are disturbed as a fellow yachtie confesses to loosing their dinghy. Eric fortunately saw a dinghy being towed in, so off he goes in Doogle (our dinghy) to take them to shore to collect it!

  • Off to the Helford River

Very excited today as we have been told so much about this place and it was always in our mind where we wait for good weather before starting our final leg to cross to the Scillies.
Definitely not disappointed on arrival but interesting sail as very choppy easterly winds . Lovely setting for our first evening watching the sun go down......I even burnt my knees!

  • Water exploration

After a slow snakey paddle to the yacht club to check out the depth of water on the pontoon, we need a drink. Basic error...we forgot to put the fins in the bottom of the csnoe so had no steerage against the tide and wind!
We take a little walk through Helford Village,, calm down, grab a coffee(?) and head back to Fino happy we can get Fino alongside tomorrow to top up our living water 💧

  • Penzance

Not fancying sitting on a bouy bumping around all night a quick change of plan and we decide to leave early ahead of the ebbing tide as the gate to the harbour closes in Penzance HW+1 eg 12.30!
About 3 miles off we ring to check where the fuel dock is - good job as the harbour master was about to close the gate! Agreeing to keep it open for us we speed up and sneak in and tie up alongside the wall, all snug for a night out on the town in Penzance. Fuel up in the morning and off we go to the Scillies.
Making the most of the sunny afternoon we take a stroll to Newlyn along the seafront before exploring the town-Old Hippie paradise.

  • Bryher

After a great crossing from Penzance we moor up in New Grimsby Sound on a lovely sunny evening.
Waking up to find the rain has settled in for the day we decide to head off for a walk around Bryher, one of the few inhabited islands in the Scillies.
All very remote and beautiful but didn't get the best views of the Atlantic!

  • Birthday morning

A lovely sunny morning to wake up to on my birthday and go for a stroll around Hugh Town to buy us some goodies. Sunday in Scillies is an old fashioned Sunday - no shops open, so will have to wait till tomorrow to spend my birthday money.

  • Tresco Treck

A good start this morning as we left St Mary's and I managed to buy 3 bargains in the sales. Taking the 11.15 ferry to Tresco we did not realise we would be dropped at the bottom end of the Island as there was not enough water to get us back to New Grimsby where we had left the dinghy. A long walk with our overnight bags past the old Abbey and finally a refreshing drink in the New Inn before abandoning our bags in the dinghy and carrying on with our tour of the Island.

  • St Agnes

Another fab island in stunning weather. Even the ferry driver hit the bottom on the way over which reminds you how shallow the waters can be. A friendly chat with a local fisherman to find out how the crab pots were made and beers on the way home whilst waiting for the tide to go out so we didn't get too wet getting back to the dinghy.

  • Leaving the Scillies

Another foggy day with a difference.
8am on the dot the Royal Yacht squadron fire a Canon across the Scillies and the flotilla of approx 20 boats, that have arrived over the past 2 days, all hoist their string of signal flags. Apparently they had all sailed here together from Cowes in order to celebrate Prince Phillips 100th birthday. It was a very pretty sight but a shame we could only see the closest few boats because of the fog.
Waiting till 11am to set off hoping the fog would clear made no difference so we headed out and slowly navigated our way around the islands before heading east across the traffic separation zones off the end of Cornwall. All in all a slow crossing but well worth it as a warm greeting and a Gin and Tonic was waiting for us on arrival at Malpas, up the river Fal.

  • Dinghy adventure to Truro

A quiet paddle up the creek at end of river Fal whilst waiting for the tide to turn. We needed enough water to get all the way up to Truro to pick up some petrol for our dinghy and generator.
Following a very narrow shallow flow of water 2 miles all the way after Malpas to Truro, we eventually ran out about 5m from the pontoon in centre of Truro. Out came the oars and we pushed ourselves in the last bit.
Well worth the trip with fuel, food and new shirts for Eric all purchased. Trip home very easy on the fully flooded river!
Lovely day ended with game of scrabble on Lady J with Neil and Sue before they head east in the morning to pick up friends in Plymouth.

  • Maintenance and lazy days

A very enjoyable and peaceful 3 days in the Fal catching up with maintenance and sharing stories with fellow cruisers from Dartford over a BBQ on the pontoon.
Painted the anchor chain and spliced some additional rope onto it -let's hope i did my homework correctly when I watched the video how to splice or we could be floating of out to sea.
Falmouth classic regatta was on and we were treated to several of the old yachts sailing past. Even had a ring side view of one as it came to an abrupt halt opposite the pontoon in the mud - the tide had gone out a little faster than expected!

  • Off to the Helford River

Time to go and find showers and a washing machine!
Lovely trip back down the river and settled in after taking on water at the yacht club - rather nerve racking as the tide was on the way out and the pontoon level dropped below 2m!
Eric starts his engine checks so I head of to find showers and a washing machine! 3 hours later I finally get back after getting stranded on the low tide at the yacht club-good news i got the washing done, bad news showers closed!
