    Peak District

    August 28 in England ⋅ 🌧 61 °F

After a 3 hour drive, we arrived late yesterday afternoon to check into our AirBnB. The Peak District is the first UK National Park located near Manchester that is known for its limestone hills and popular for hiking and camping. We were able to bring Stevie along for the trip which she certainly appreciated. It rained as we pulled up but quickly stopped after unloading so we made our way into the nearby town of Buxton for a pub dinner. After dinner, we grabbed some milk and snacks at the store (as we brought most of our food along this time) before home to enjoy the hot tub. We are surrounded by beautiful rolling hills, full of sheep and cattle. After the hot tub, we headed off to bed (with no internet or cell signal).

Today, we ate breakfast in before heading out for our first hike. 20 minutes in and a light rain came down but quickly stopped before we got through our first field. The terrain reminds me of Wales and Ireland combined. After climbing our first hill, we got our first glimpse of the popular Chrome Hill. A popular destination, it was featured in the series finale of Peaky Blinders and was very beautiful. A bit of slippery walk but amazing views at the top. After heading down, the terrain leveled out and we continued across the sheep fields and found the local ‘honesty’ shop - full of local baked goods, candles, coffees and teas along with ice cream. After everyone grabbed a snack, we headed through the small village of Hollinsclough before making our way back to our AirBnB. Joce ran out for a few supplies for dinner while I worked on fantasy football draft materials and the kids had a late lunch.

Time for some game time (Sequence). Joce and I took a walk up the nearby hills before dinner. Then hot tub again on a calm night.

  • Hike in the rain

    August 31 in England ⋅ 🌙 59 °F

Today we got up for a hike at The Roaches (from the French for Les Roches - the rocks). It was about a 15 minute drive away and famous for it’s rock climbing. We saw more than a dozen climbing teams on our walk and the boys were asking when it was our turn. The location was much different than our hike yesterday - the cliffs were more dramatic and the rocks were abundant. There were also ferns everywhere on the hike up to the top that gave the area a Jurassic Park feel. There were breathtaking views along the easy path and it was nice to see so much of the landscape. We made it along the entire cliff line and as we turned to head back, the rain started. Fortunately, we were prepared with our rain jackets and it never rained hard but we ate our packed lunch while walking on the road and by the time we got back to the car almost an hour later, it had already stopped. After the short drive home, everyone got in the hot tub to warm up (and were greeted by a flock of geese as the rain started up, continuing for the rest of the night). Afterwards, we had time for games before dinner in while we introduced the kids to Hamilton (fortunately, I had downloaded a few movies to my phone before we left). We stayed up late into the night to finish the entire musical - we were happy when all 3 loved it as much as we do.

The next morning, we got up to pack and made our way to a small local cafe for sandwiches and oatcakes (basically a savory pancake with cheese and bacon - delicious) before the 3 hour drive home, listening to the Hamilton soundtrack for much of it. A beautiful part of England that we really enjoyed.
