  • Day 288: Ancient City Han & Wei Dynasty

    Ancient City of the Han & Wei Dynasties! It’s close to The White Horse Temple, around 3km walk. Nobody came here as it’s not well set up yet. They were still building a large museum for the ruins here. It was free entrance when we were there. But it won’t be free in the near future for sure.Read more

  • Day 289: Luoyang Museum

    Best rainy day’s activity! Visiting Luoyang Museum to understand more about the ancient Luoyang. The most impressive part of the museum was the showcase of the three-coloured figurines (yellow, white, green) which were the popular pottery style of the Tang Dynasty.Read more

  • Day 290: Luoyang Longmen Caves

    Our highlight in Luoyang! The Luoyang Longmen Caves. We were advised by our friends in Dunhuang to come early and go straight to the Giant Buddha to beat the crowd. Very good advice! We had the place to ourselves for the very first hour!

    Surrounded by a beautiful environment of green hills and a clean river, a lot or caves and niches are located on both cliffs, Just like a honeycomb. Longmen Grottoes was
    inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO.

    The carving work at Longmen began in Northern Wei Dynasty, when the Emperor moved his capita to Luoyang. From then
    on, construction on caves had been carried on during Western Wei, Eastern
    Wei, Northern Qi, Sui and Tang, Five Dynasties.

  • Day 292: Lijingmen

    Lijingmen, another gate in the ancient city of Luoyang. It was built in the Sui Dynasty. It has been a place where hundreds of officials and people worshipped gods. The night view is amazing. Now, it has become a very touristy area.Read more

  • Day 293: Ningbo Train Station

    Welcome to Ningbo! Not many tourists will visit Ningbo but Chris wanted to finish Chapter 1 with the start of the Maritime Silk Road (that connects to the Pacific Ocean). Therefore, we made a stop here in Ningbo to finish up our Silk Road Journey.Read more

  • Day 294: Silk Road Canal

    The only goal in Ningbo, visiting the Canal! We saw a smaller part of the canal in Luoyang, but here we could see a bigger version, which connects to the Pacific Ocean. It looked like we have completed our silk road journey ✅Read more

  • Day 295: Yongfeng Warehouse Site

    Yongfeng Warehouse Site, originally a rice warehouse in the Southern Song Dynasty, was renovated by the local government of Ningbo in the Yuan Dynasty. In the center
    of the site stand two detached constructions, surrounded by the relies of filed corridors as well as the yards,
    drainage ditches, wells and stream courses. The excavation of the site is so far the
    largest and the most fruitful urban excavation in the history of Ningbo.

  • Day 295: Ningbo Drum Tower

    Next to the Yongfeng warehouse was the Drum Tower. It was constructed during the Tang Dynasty. It’s the only remaining ruin of an d city gate tower in Ningbo.

    The weather was not very good on the day we visited, so we just stayed there briefly.Read more

  • Day 295: Ningbo Cathedral

    Ningbo Cathedral! This was the first Cathedral that we have seen for a while since Europe. We went inside and it was very peaceful. It was very rare to see a large Cathedral standing in a city centre in China. Ningbo had a lot of western influence during the Opium War period, therefore the historical buildings remained in the city as well.Read more

  • Day 296: Tiantong Temple

    We discovered this hidden gem in Ningbo. It is a one of the five sacred Chinese Chan (JAPANESE: Zen) Buddhist temples. It is founded by the monk Yixing in the year 300. It is also the cradle of the Soto School of Japanese Buddhism.

    No tour group came here but it was definitely a peaceful place to walk around. Even though the weather was not good, we did spend whole day walking around the area.

  • Day 299: Shenzhen

    Our family visited Shenzhen to have a dinner with us before we headed back. So we stayed in the hotel in Shenzhen for one night. And we went back home together after dinner!

    Very last of our Chapter one journey! Here we are, Hong Kong 🇭🇰🇭🇰 it marked the end of our 300-day journey from Toronto to Hong Kong. It’s time to take some rest and prepare for the next chapter :)
