• The Neue Burg wing of the Hofburg

    4. september, Østrig ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

The two identical buildings behind the Hofburg in Vienna are the twin wings of the Neue Burg (New Castle) wing. This semi-circular and monumental structure was added in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as part of the Hofburg complex extension. It faces the Heldenplatz (Heroes’ Square) and is the most prominent Baroque revival style part of the Hofburg.

These twin wings are symmetrical and house several museums, including parts of the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Art History Museum) and the Naturhistorisches Museum (Natural History Museum), among other cultural institutions.

The Neue Burg also includes the Austrian National Library’s Prunksaal (State Hall) and other imperial collections.

This architectural addition was created to expand the Hofburg complex and to provide a grand formal façade facing Heldenplatz, harmonizing history with late historicist style in Vienna
