    Singapore Airport

    Just landed in Singapore - we’re both quite happy to be off the plane! Found somewhere to eat while we wait for our next flight, we have a 5 hour wait before we fly to Auckland ✈

    A sleepy wander in Auckland

    We managed a very sleepy walk in Auckland, had a little dinner, we’re now back at the hotel and just planning our day tomorrow. We‘ll be up nice and early to go to Paihia 🚗 now off to sleep!

    Wir haben uns gerade kurz (ziemlich übermüdet) Auckland angeschaut. Nun sind wir jedoch schon wieder zurück im Hotel und planen den morgigen Tag. Unser Ziel ist es morgen recht früh aufzustehen und in Richtung Paihia zu fahren 🚙 nun wird aber geschlafen!    LĂ€s mer

    Waipoua Kauri Forest

    Today we drove from Auckland to the Waipoua Forest to visit the oldest & largest known living kauri tree “Tāne Mahuta” (also sign posted as “BIG TREE” 😄)

    Trunk circumference: 13.77 m
    Total height: 51.2 m
    The photos don’t do the size justice - it was enormous.

    Heute sind wir von Auckland aus in den Waipoua Forest gefahren und haben uns den größten, ältesten und noch bekannten Kauri Baum „Tāne Mahuta“ angeschaut. Auf einigen Straßenschildern steht einfach nur „BIG TREE“ mit einem Richtungspfeil (fanden wir ziemlich lustig).

    Höhe: 51,2 m

    Paihia

    The second Destination today was Paihia.
    A small town located in the inner Bay of Islands, in the northern end of the North Island.
    Definitely a bit odd to have 25 degrees on Christmas Eve! We had a really yummy dinner sitting outside, next to the sea and listened to Christmas songs đŸŽ…đŸ»đŸŽ„đŸ›· hope everyone is having a nice Christmas Eve!

    Das zweite Ziel am heutigen Tag war Paihia.
    Paihia ist eine kleine Stadt in der Bay of Islands der Region Northland auf der Nordinsel von Neuseeland.

    Es war sehr ungewohnt heilig Abend bei 25 Grad zu verbringen. Beim sehr leckeren Abendessen auf einer Terrasse am Meer haben wir heute Weihnachtslieder gehört. đŸŽ…đŸ»đŸŽ„đŸ›·    LĂ€s mer

    Hole in the Rock & Dolphins

    Today we did a cruise tour to discover the bay of islands including the famous Hole in the Rock on Motukokako Island, which was our first stop. We were really lucky and saw a group of dolphins! 🐬 was so lovely to see them out in the wild!

    Heute haben wir an einer Bay of Islands Schiffs-Erkundungs-Tour teilgenommen und uns u.a. das berühmte Hole in the Rock auf der Insel Motukokako angeschaut.

    Wir wurden auf der Tour sogar für ein paar Minuten von einer Gruppe Delfine begleitet.

    Zum Abschluss haben wir auf der Insel Otehei Bay (weihnachtlich) gegrillt.    LĂ€s mer

    Oethei Bay

    On the way to Otehei Bay island, our tour guide told us that James Cook discovered the islands, and in his journal described that the bird sound was so loud on the islands, they needed to go off shore to have a conversation - unfortunately he also decided he’d like to farm the land and burnt the islands, killing most of all the birds. Those that survived were killed soon after from the cats and dogs that he introduced into the island. All the birds didn’t have wings (as they had no natural predators), and all of the birds are now extinct. Can see why they’re so protective of their wildlife here! They’re really strickt about conserving the islands and they’re trying to introduce birds back onto the island.

    Quick Stop in Auckland

    On our 5 hour drive to Pauanui we decided to take a break and visit the Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium in Auckland 🐟🐠

    Auf unserer 5 stündigen Fahrt nach Pauanui am heutigen Tag, haben wir uns dazu entschieden in Auckland eine Pause einzulegen und uns das Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium anzuschauen. 🐟🐠LĂ€s mer

    Pananui Beaches

    Afterwards, we continued our drive down to Pauanui, and we have had a really nice relaxing afternoon walking on the beaches! A bit cloudy bit still really nice for a walk 😊

    Hahei - Cathedral Cove & Hot Water Beach

    This morning we got up early to try and avoid the people at Cathedral Cove in Hahei. We managed to miss the crazy crowds but it was still a lot of people there!

    Afterwards, we went to Hot Water Beach to check out the hot spring there. You can dig a hole in the sand, and bathe in the warm water. We tried to do it but our pool of water was either too cold or boiling hot, so we decided to go chill on the sand and get a bit of sunburn instead! đŸ˜„đŸ„”

    Heute morgen sind wir recht früh aufgebrochen um der üblichen Menschenmenge an der Cathedral Cove Bucht auszuweichen.
    Wir konnten zwar dem großen Ansturm aus dem Weg gehen, es waren dennoch bereits sehr viele Menschen anwesend.

    Danach sind wir zum Hot Water Beach gefahren. Hier ist es an einem kurzen Abschnitt des Strandes möglich ein Loch zu “buddeln” und im warmen Wasser zu baden. Irgendwie wollte es bei uns mit der richtigen Wasser-Temperatur nicht so recht klappen, entweder war das Wasser viel zu heiß oder eben viel zu kalt. Nach einigen Versuchen haben wir uns dazu entschieden einfach am Strand (weit entfernt von den vielen Buddlern) zu sitzen und uns einen Sonnenbrand zuzulegen. đŸ˜…đŸ„”    LĂ€s mer

    Whakatane

    No tours are allowed at the moment because of the volcano, so we had breakfast and drove to the Kohi viewpoint in Whaktane. We had a great view of the area, the beautiful ƌhope Beach and of Whale Island and White Island.

    After that we had walk in an area known to have a lot of kiwis. (Kiwis are nocturnal but Christian was still hoping to see one!).

    Afterwards we had a long walk on ƌhope Beach.

    Heute morgen sind wir nach dem Frühstück zum Aussichtspunkt Kohi gefahren. Von hier aus hatten wir einen tollen Blick auf die Region, den wunderschönen ƌhope Beach und auf Whale- sowie White Island.

    Danach sind wir einen Kiwi Pfad gelaufen und haben (trotz dessen, dass Kiwis nachtaktiv sind) gespannt Ausschau nach Neuseelands Nationaltier gehalten. Leider haben wir keinen Kiwi in freier Wildbahn gesehen.

    Im Anschluss haben wir einen gemütlichen Spaziergang am ƌhope Beach gemacht.    LĂ€s mer

    Lake Rotoiti, Rotorua

    We left Whakatane early this morning to do a Kayaking tour in Lake Rotoiti in Rotorua. The area is well known for all the lakes and volcanic activity.

    For the tour we went out with the kayaks and had a chance to go into a glow worm cave. Which they explained aren’t actually ‘glow worms’ - the worm part would be more accurate to say ‘maggots’ and the glowing is uhh.. actually maggot poo. So not as romantic as it sounds.

    We continued kayaking to a natural sulphur hot spring, where we were allowed to have a dip, and then we paddled back! đŸ›¶

    Heute morgen sind wir bereits im 6:45 Uhr aus Whakatane abgereist um es rechtzeitig zu unserer Kajak-Tour auf dem See Rotoiti in Rotorua zu schaffen.

    Pünktlich angekommen, ging es auch gleich in den Kajaks auf den See. Ein Teil der Tour war u.a. die Besichtigung einer Glühwürmchenhöhle.

    Danach ging es weiter zu einer heißen Schwefelquelle. Hier haben wir ein Bad genommen und sind wieder zurückgepaddelt. đŸ›¶    LĂ€s mer

    Wai-O-Tapu, Geothermal Park

    As Rotorua is so well known for the volcanic activity there, we didn’t want to leave without seeing some of the geothermal parks there. Rotorua is actually a super volcano, the crater is 22km (Rotorua Lake). Last time it erupted was 250,000 years ago, so it’s pretty safe, but there’s a lot of activity there. It was really interesting to experience! 🌋

    Da Rotorua für seine vulkanischen Aktivitäten bekannt ist, wollten wir nicht weiterreisen, ohne einen der Parks im Geothermalgebiet besucht zu haben. Rotorua ist eigentlich ein sogenannter Supervulkan - der Krater ist 22 km lang (Rotorua Lake). Der letzte Ausbruch war vor ca. 250.000 Jahren, somit wohl recht ungefährlich. Ein wirklich sehr interessantes Erlebnis! 🌋    LĂ€s mer

    Wellington

    We arrived in Wellington today at around 11:30 after a 4 hour drive. Our first stop was the National Museum - Te Papa Tongarewa.

    The main topics of the museum are things like,
    The history of New Zealand, the Maori culture, the volcanic and earthquake activities and the animals/nature in New Zealand, which has changed drastically since Europeans immigrated here - was really great to visit, and super interesting.

    The second stop was a cable car ride 🚡 to a botanical garden with a viewing platform.

    We actually wanted to visit Zealandia (wildlife sanctuary) as well. Unfortunately we were a little late. All we could do was visit the museum and buy a kiwi 🐩 t-shirt for Rebecca in the souvenir shop.

    Heute um ca. 11:30 Uhr sind wir nach einer 4 stündigen Fahrt in der Hauptstadt von Neuseeland - Wellington angekommen. Unsere erste Station in Wellington war das Nationalmuseum - Te Papa Tongarewa.

    Es geht hauptsächlich um die folgenden sehr gut aufbereiteten Themen:

    Die Geschichte Neuseelands, die Maori-Kultur, die Vulkan- und Erdbebenaktivitäten und um die Natur Neuseelands, die sich drastisch durch die Immigration der Europäer verändert hat.

    Die zweite Station war die Fahrt mit einer Seilbahn 🚡 zu einem botanischen Garten mit Aussichtsplattform.

    Wir hatten eigentlich auch vor uns Zealandia (Naturschutzgebiet) anzuschauen. Leider waren wir hierzu ein wenig zu spät dran. Lediglich das Museum konnten wir uns noch anschauen und im Souvenir-Shop für Rebecca ein Kiwi 🐩 T-Shirt kaufen.    LĂ€s mer

    Rabbit Island

    Today we took the ferry ⛮ from Wellington (North Island) over the Cook Strait, through the Marlborough Sounds to Picton (South Island).

    From Picton it was still 2 hours to our accommodation on Rabbit Island 🐇🏝 (ironically, no rabbits here).

    Here we are staying in a cozy hut for the next 2 days. Isolated from civilization (Christian likes it very much).

    Heute sind wir mit der Fähre ⛮ von Wellington (Nordinsel) über die Cookstraße (benannt nach James Cook - wie unschwer zu erkennen ist), durch die Marlborough Sounds nach Picton (Südinsel) gefahren.

    Von Picton waren es dann noch 2 Stunden zu unserer Unterkunft ggü. der Rabbit Island 🐇🏝.

    Hier sind wir die nächsten 2 Tage in einer kuscheligen Hütte abgeschottet von der Zivilisation untergebracht (Christian mag es sehr).    LĂ€s mer

    Stand Up Paddle

    Today we were stand-up paddling at Tahunanui Beach. In short: Christian fell into the water about 100 times. Rebecca paddled like a pro. At some point an 80 year old man came on a stand-up paddle board and gave Christian tips. It was at this moment Christian decided to never try it again.

    Short additional information: during the whole time (2 hours) nobody else (approx. 25 people on stand-up paddle boards) fell into the water. 🏄‍♂

    Heute waren wir am Tahunanui Beach Stand-Up-Paddeln. Kurz zusammengefasst: Christian ca. 100 mal ins Wasser gefallen. Rebecca gepaddelt wie ein Profi. Irgendwann kam dann ein ca. 80 jähriger Mann auf einem Stand-Up-Paddel-Board und hat Christian Tipps gegeben. Das war der Zeitpunkt als Christian für sich entschieden hat, nie wieder im Leben einen weiteren Versuch zu unternehmen.

    Zusatzinfo: in der ganzen Zeit (2 Stunden) ist sonst niemand (ca. 25 Leute auf Stand-Up-Paddel-Boards) ins Wasser gefallen.    LĂ€s mer

    Hokitika

    Today we drove from Rabitt Island to Hokitika. We stopped for a short break at Maruia Falls. The waterfalls were caused by an earthquake in 1929 and are now about 10 m high.

    When we arrived in Hokitika we went straight to the National Kiwi Center. And YES, we saw kiwis 🐩 - they actually exist (we had began to wonder)! We weren't allowed to take pictures, but we could watch them for a moment. They are very quick, funny to look at and bigger than expected (importantly: super cute).

    Because the day here is very rainy, we decided afterwards to have a cozy coffee break followed by a jade jewelry shopping tour.

    On the way back to the hotel we passed an art shop (run by a German who lives in New Zealand since 20 years - because he doesn't like Germans). Here we bought a drawing of a kea (a mountain parrot threatened with extinction). The Kea is a pretty cheeky, quite funny bird and is one of the smartest birds in the world. There are a lot of funny videos on Youtube.

    To finish the day we treated ourselves and had dinner delivered to our room đŸœ

    Heute sind wir von Rabitt Island nach Hokitika gefahren. Wir haben (rein zufällig) eine kurze Pause an den Maruia Falls eingelegt. Die Wasserfälle sind wohl 1929 durch ein Erdbeben entstanden und heute in etwa 10 m hoch. Eine schöne zufällige Pause 😊

    In Hokitika angekommen ging es dann auch gleich ins National Kiwi Center. Und JA, wir haben Kiwis 🐩 gesehen - es gibt sie tatsächlich! Wir durften zwar keine Bilder machen, konnten sie aber dafür einen Moment lang beobachten. Sie sind sehr schnell, lustig anzusehen und größer als gedacht.

    Da der heutige Tag hier sehr regnerisch ist, haben wir uns danach für eine gemütliche Kaffeepause mit anschließender Jade-Schmuck-Shoppingtour entschieden.

    Auf dem Rückweg zum Hotel sind wir an einem Kunstladen vorbeigekommen (geführt von einem deutschen, der seit 20 Jahren in Neuseeland lebt, weil er keine Deutschen mag). Hier haben wir eine Zeichnung von einem Kea gekauft (ein vom aussterben bedrohter Bergpapagei). Der Kea ist ein ziemlich frecher, recht lustiger Vogel und gehört zu den intelligentesten Vögeln der Welt. Auf Youtube sind viele lustige Videos.

    Hokitika Jade Stone & Maori Tour

    We took a guided tour along the Arahura River this morning. The Maori guide told us the legends and stories of his people “Kati Wae Wae Hapu” and explained the importance of the green stone (jade) for the Maori. Then we went looking at the river for jade by ourselves, found our own piece and made a necklace out of it.
    Rebecca took (typically English) about 10 stones instead of one.

    We also got Maori names. Rebecca is now called Waitaiki and I am Tamaahua from now on. We were also told the story of the names, and the jade stones but it would take too long to write 😅

    Wir haben heute an einer geführten Tour entlang des Arahura Flusses teilgenommen. Der Maori-Führer hat uns dabei Legenden und Geschichten seines Volkes „Kati Wae Wae Hapu“ erzählt und uns erklärt welche Bedeutung der Grünstein (Jade) für die Maori hat(te). Wir haben uns dann selbst am Fluß auf Jade-Suche begeben und jeweils ein eigenes Stück Jade gefunden und daraus Ketten gemacht. Rebecca hat gleich mal (typisch englisch) statt einem ca. 10 Jade Steine mitgenommen.

    Des Weiteren haben wir auch Maori Namen bekommen. Rebecca heißt ab sofort Waitaiki und ich bin von nun an Tamaahua. Dazu wurde uns auch noch die Geschichte zu den Namen erzählt, das würde hier aber den Rahmen sprengen 😅    LĂ€s mer

    Kiwi Wildlife Center, Franz Josef

    After the tour we drove towards Fox Glacier and took a break in Franz Josef to visit the Kiwi Wildlife Center. Here we did a Kiwi Backstage Pass Tour and were allowed to look behind the scenes. A kiwi ranger led us through the incubation and rearing system and told us about the history and success of the Nest Egg program initiative. They hatch the eggs and keep the kiwis for about a year (during the years they are most vulnerable to predators) and then release them into the wild. Kiwis have a life span of 50-70 years, have cat like whiskers, terrible eyesight (hence why they’re nocturnal), and they’re soooooo cute.

    Danach sind wir in Richtung Fox Glacier gefahren und haben in Franz Josef eine Pause eingelegt um das Kiwi Wildtierzentrum zu besuchen. Hier haben wir an einer Kiwi Backstage Pass Tour teilgenommen und durften hinter die Kulissen blicken. Ein Kiwi Ranger hat uns durch die Inkubations- und Aufzuchtanlage geführt und uns über die Geschichte und die Erfolge der Initiative des Nest Egg-Programms aufgeklärt.    LĂ€s mer

    Fox Glacier

    When we arrived in Fox Glacier we immediately went looking for food and found a nice restaurant (we had pizza) 🍕. Tomorrow we want to explore a little in the early morning hours and then continue to Wanaka after breakfast.

    In Fox Glacier angekommen haben wir uns unmittelbar auf Nahrungssuche begeben und sind in einem netten Lokal fündig geworden (es gab Pizza) 🍕. Morgen wollen wir in den frühen Morgenstunden den Ort ein wenig erkunden und fahren dann nach dem Frühstück weiter nach Wanaka.    LĂ€s mer

    Fox Glacier Hike

    Today we did a 2 hour long hike along the Fox River to a viewing platform that gave us a nice view of the Fox Glacier.

    After the hike we got food for the trip in the local supermarket and drove towards Wanaka.

    Heute sind wir in etwa 2 Stunden entlang am Fox River zu einer Aussichtsplattform gewandert, die uns einen tollen Ausblick auf den Fox Gletscher ermöglichte.

    Die Berge auf beiden Seiten geben dem Gletschertal eine besonders gewaltige Dimension.

    Nach der Wanderung haben wir uns im lokalen Supermarkt Lebensmittel für die Fahrt besorgt und sind in Richtung Wanaka gefahren.    LĂ€s mer

    Journey to Wanaka

    We stopped a few times on the way to Wanaka, our trip took 4 hours and there’s only one road, which was pretty windy, so was really nice to take a few stops - there was quite a lot to see during the 300 km, including lakes, waterfalls, rivers, beautiful beaches etc.

    We took our first meal break at the beautiful Lake Paringa. The second on the Ship Creek Beach. The third at the Thunder Creek Falls. Then a short break on the Makarora River. We tried to make a lot of breaks 😅

    Bis wir jedoch nach ca. 4 Stunden in Wanaka angekommen sind, haben wir einige Male gehalten. Auf den knapp 300 km gibt es eine Menge zu sehen.

    U.a. Seen, Wasserfälle, Flüsse, schöne Strände usw..

    Kurz und knapp:

    Die erste Essenspause haben wir am Lake Paringa eingelegt.

    Die zweite am Strand von Ship Creek.

    Die dritte an den Thunder Creek Falls.

    Dann noch eine kurze Pause am Makarora River.

    Wie ihr seht, haben wir oft gehalten und dementsprechend eine Menge gegessen 😅    LĂ€s mer
