    Grand Mesa Byway

    August 7, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Outside of Palisade CO, we drove the Grand Mesa Scenic Byway, which started with majestic rock-bare bluffs, then transitioning into mountains, aspen forests, alpine meadows and lakes. Although there are scattered ranches, much of this is either Colorado state land or parks, or the Grand Mesa National Forest, with altitudes over 10,000 feet. The views were smoky and hazy from western wildfires but the scenery is beautiful, even seeing some Colorado pronghorn by the side of the road. The Grand Mesa National Forest visitor center, at 10,000 feet, is set on a pond where people were fishing, walking their dogs (Dunbar always makes friends), hiking and kayaking. A bit chilly at that altitude.

Dale, continuing his hunt for good restaurants, found The Palisade Cafe and Wine Bar where we had cold fruit soup and Ahi tacos....and hard cider. Off to Steamboat Springs tomorrow.
