  • Talullah Gorge Georgia

    25 juillet 2021, États Unis ⋅ 🌧 77 °F

One of the largest gorges in the eastern United States, it features hiking around the rim, a 300 step stair to the bottom of the gorge and waterfalls. And a suspension bridge that I won’t get anywhere close to walking on.
A fun town is Helen, Georgia, with a German Alpine them and River tubing through the middle of the town. Too crowded to find parking!

  • Nashville is HOT

    29 juillet 2021, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 93 °F

A mid-90 degree day in Nashville convinced us that we wanted to be indoors and led us to the Country Music Hall of Fame. The history of country music, the flamboyant personalities and the great music reminded us of all the songs that we’ve listened to.

And Dunbar stayed in the trailer, set up with a remote camera so we could see him and talk to him. Predictably he spent the day on the couch.

  • The great midwest-MO & KS

    1 août 2021, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

Corn fields, cows and even a herd of Buffalo, we drove Nashville to Columbia MO on Saturday and onto Kansas on Sunday.

The air is hazy, probably due to wild fires in the west and western Kansas hasn’t had rain in over a month. Although wind farms are not surprising, the number of oil and gas wells in the western part was not expected. Shows that the best way to get to know a region is on the ground, not flying over it on a plane.En savoir plus

  • Palisade CO

    6 août 2021, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

Palisade CO is a great little town outside of Grand Junction, CO, which seems to have the motto: "A peachy town with a drinking problem". Although surrounded by brown, dry bluffs, Palisade is on both sides of the Colorado River and is filled with peach orchards, apple orchards and vineyards. Add in the buildings next to our campground which seems to be a marijuana growing operation, and you have tourists on bicycles and those visiting for the many hiking trails in the area. A few are visiting the Cameo Shooting and Education Center for practicing gun and archery skills.

Dale was in the mood for good food and quickly found a distillery, while I located an excellent bakery for breakfast. For lunch it was a hard cider restaurant with very good food. The town had outdoor artwork everywhere but our favorite was the list of Palisade Grouches for each year. And after driving the area, we found a farm stand with peaches and peach cobbler.

We finished the day with a trip to Palisade Brewing where a bluegrass band was playing. Midway through the set, a bridal party made a stop to cheers from the crowd. Clearly this was the spot to be on a Friday night in Palisade.

  • Grand Mesa Byway

    7 août 2021, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Outside of Palisade CO, we drove the Grand Mesa Scenic Byway, which started with majestic rock-bare bluffs, then transitioning into mountains, aspen forests, alpine meadows and lakes. Although there are scattered ranches, much of this is either Colorado state land or parks, or the Grand Mesa National Forest, with altitudes over 10,000 feet. The views were smoky and hazy from western wildfires but the scenery is beautiful, even seeing some Colorado pronghorn by the side of the road. The Grand Mesa National Forest visitor center, at 10,000 feet, is set on a pond where people were fishing, walking their dogs (Dunbar always makes friends), hiking and kayaking. A bit chilly at that altitude.

Dale, continuing his hunt for good restaurants, found The Palisade Cafe and Wine Bar where we had cold fruit soup and Ahi tacos....and hard cider. Off to Steamboat Springs tomorrow.

  • Steamboat Springs CO

    11 août 2021, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

A restful and low key stop for us where we combined the necessary grocery and errand running (including getting a mani/pedi) with just enjoying this peaceful mountain town. I had a nice horseback ride in the hills above SS with a guide who was full of info about local ranchers, including a yearly horse drive from winter quarters to summer quarters. I would love to see that!

My horse was very tall—Dale said watching me get on it was pretty funny—no mounting blocks.

We camped along a creek with nice neighbors who came over for beer—2 single parents each with their pre-teen kids, 5 total including a set of triplets—and just relaxed. What a nice town!

  • The Road to Jackson Wy

    13 août 2021, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Aww the need to be flexible! Rt 13 into Jackson had long delays—we heard it from many people at the campground and even Google Maps routed us around it. Yes, Google maps took us up Rt 318, an almost empty paved road. Then we hit Colorado 10N which gave us 30 miles of unpaved road, and took us through open range land (watch for cows in the road because they’re just wandering around). Also, beautiful, rocky, wild scenery, going through BLM land and a Wild Horse Sanctuary, with canyons and animal trails up the side of steep hills.

And took a rock in the windshield as well. Need to get that fixed. Made it to Jackson—it’s going to be a great visit.

  • Grand Teton National Park

    14 août 2021, États Unis ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

We were out the door by 7:30 to go to the Grand Teton National Park. First stop was Mormon Row, an early settlement, followed by many outlooks and scenic spots, seeing Pronghorns. The closest to a bear was an exhibit at Willow Springs where a Ranger talked about bears in the area (the paths were blocked off due to heavy near activity), as well as a wolf family that had migrated from Yellowstone.

The Grand Tetons leave you in awe of the beauty and ruggedness of the Park, with snow pack still visible in August. Jackson Lake was very low but I loved the bike trails throughout the park with many groups using them.

After encountering a family wedding taking pictures we realized that it was starting to get crowded so we headed back to Jackson, finishing the day at a local brewery talking to a local internet reporter.

  • Dubois Wyoming-Longmire Country

    19 août 2021, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

A real cowboy town with beautiful views of the Shoshone National Forest and the Bridger-Teton National Forest. There was a single restaurant that was the big draw, the Cowboy, which served great pies. The land around Dubois was wide open and a mixtures of ranches, dude ranches and BLM (public) land. As we had taken a rock through our windshield, Dale spent an entire day driving 80 miles to Jackson to get a replacement, only to have the repair shop put a hole in the metal frame around the windshield. It was a long long day for Dale.

But the local rodeo was a blast, with 5 year olds riding sheep in contests, young kids barrel racing, roping and so on. Real Americana and great people watching.

  • Chico Hot springs Resort, Montana

    26 août 2021, États Unis ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

The big Montana family wedding is here, at the Chico Hot Springs Resort in Pray Montana. A beautiful Old Style Montana resort built in 1900 and located in the hills north of Yellowstone Park, it has old fashioned rooms, horseback riding, cabins, and covered wagons to sleep in. And of course a ghost, probably in room 217. It gives Dale and I a break from RV living for 4 days.

Peggy and Yosi, Daniel and his friend Madi, Glenna, and Megan and Rob—the whole family is descending on our niece Leah and her fiancé Brian along with my sister Suzi and her husband Paul, who live nearby in Livingston Montana.

It’s supposed to be the best restaurant in Montana and Peggy was lucky enough to gets reservations for 7 on Sunday night. The Trout Almondine is known to be especially good and comes from a lake in the region; the beef was tender and delicious. Add in good wine and a flaming dessert and we agreed that this was the best meal each of us had eaten in a long while.En savoir plus

    4 septembre 2021, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Classy ski town that is also popular in Summer. It is near the Uinta Mountains where we are camping so we went for a good breakfast at one of their many restaurants. The town is charming and booming. We visited the local library so I could pay bills and it was beautiful and welcoming with indoor-outdoor spaces, a Create lab with 3D printer and a big book sale going onEn savoir plus

  • Sheepdog Herding, Wasatch State Park

    5 septembre 2021, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

At the Soldier Hollow Sheepherding contests outside of Park City, we’ll trained border collies tried to complete the course in a set time. The problem is that they were herding four sheep who resisted going through the gates and wanted to graze instead. There was usually a particularly ornery sheep who lead the herd astray, while the dog’s owner whistled to direct the dog. Especially entertaining when the sheep escaped the course and headed down the road with 4 herding dogs chasing them. I rooted for the sheep.

There was Scottish Highland games and dog agility demonstration as well. Love those men (and women) in kilts and the dogs as well.

  • Durango Colorado

    11 septembre 2021, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Very cool town with lots of young people (Fort Lewis College), skiing, hiking. The Durango-Silverton train is a single gauge train through the Rockies with spectacular scenery. We didn’t do it because they don’t allow dogs 😧 and the drive up the Highway is very dangerous. So I went shopping and Dale found a brewery.

Nice farmers market too, with a Wolf preservation booth and great local chiles and foods.
