    Brief NYC leg!!

    June 30, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

First night spent in NYC!!! 18-hr layover meant to be spent in the airport but got saved by the lovely Ben and Cristina with a bed 😍😍 best nights sleep ever!!! Then a stressful trip on the subway back to the airport almost made us regret going into the city in the first place. But hey ho made it in the end!!Read more

  • Day 3

    24hr in Bogota

    July 2, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

1st hostel night, card games and a pint before the jet lag kicked in :( then a yummy brek and walking tour. First friend made in Colombia and guess where she went to school? Yep Alleyns ofc - Blooming small world :o almost got kidnapped in the gold museum (we both would have gone with the lady ‘wanting us to teach her students English’ - sorry mum and dad) went for traditional food, broke my vegetarianism for a chicken empanada (worth it) stressed Liv out (again) by being too chilled about the fact that we were getting to the airport an hour before take off. Uber driver almost killed us 3 times, but got us here with time to spare, now off to Medellin!!!!!

    Opinions of Bogota:
Bex - seems cool, lots of graffiti and ate lots of good food
Liv - colourful and lots of dogs in hats

    Medellin part 1

    July 3, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ 🌩️ 24 °C

Made it to Medellín, got stuck in a tunnel for an hour and thought we were about to get kidnapped but made it to the hostel safe. Was absolutely pissing it down with rain so we had no choice but to run to the wing shop across from the hostel. Wings were banging, made me question why I ever gave them up in the first place.
Found another Ward wondering around the lobby (can’t escape recently) downtown tour of Medellín was great then back for a nap! Went out for tacos and then pizza and realised we could be anywhere. Attempted the rooftop, got too tired and went to bed

    Guatape

    July 4, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Early morning for a tour to Guatape, was pretty and also had a boat ride. Liv made us bring our towels and told us we could swim - complete lie and kids are crying thanks liv 😭 climbed a big rock and ate lots of yummy Colombian food - chicken ofc I can’t get enough!!!! finally conquered the rooftop and managed a night out in Medellin. We understand the hype now - shots were huuuuge. Felt like I was at a school disco w my mum and dad (liv and joe) trying to make me talk to a boy I fancied - side note absolute mood killer when your family are watching (jokes love u guys) was good fun and I reckon we’ll be back 🤙🤪Read more

  • Day 7

    Jardin

    July 6, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ 🌧 22 °C

After an insanely hungover brunch where it felt like we were in Clapham we managed to make it to the bus station and endure a veryyyy bumpy ride to Jardin - so worth it though it was so pretty!! Got pasta (cultured) and slept like a lil baby. Then did a waterfall hike and swam in one - was a big main character moment. Perhaps biggest regret is not bringing a raincoat but the locals don’t wear them either so guess I’ll just keep getting soaked 🤷‍♀️Read more

  • Day 9

    Cartagena!!

    July 8, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Flew to Cartagena after a v hungover day spent in the pool - it is well hot here might be too hot. Hostel was pretty but not v social - went to the “pool party” and were the only ones there. V pretty city though, went to some cool street bars, ate yummy Colombian food (finally) and went to a cool bar street. Did a very sweaty walking tour and out again - managed to make some friends this time, played beer pong (I dominated ofc) then went to the cooooooolest rooftop club thingy, met a Brit that we loved until he brought out the old “junior doctors are being precious” and said he was joining the marines - he was hilarious though so we let it slide :/ liv fell off her bed (was bound to happen eventually) but I caught her - best cousin award 🥇
Now hungover again (shock), missed breakfast (have never slept so well in my life those beds are built different) but managed to make it onto the bus to Minca for another much needed detox ✌️

Bex Jones and the trek of doom (Minca)

    July 10, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Minca!! What a place. Brace yourselves this is a long one (give me some credit am sat at the airport and haven’t been alone in 2 weeks- it feels weird). Did a trek that felt like we were trying to get past the challenges to get to the philosopher’s stone:

Challenge 1: ‘The Dog that has killed 4 people’ - after getting slightly lost on the confusing trails we decided to ask a friendly local for directions. We were told (en español) that the correct way was just over there, but be careful because there is a very aggressive dog that has killed 4 people! Um? No? Before we could turn back the lady looked at us pathetic Brits lost in the jungle and said just take a stick and it’s fine? Again um? No? But Liv had already taken off with her twig following the lady across the dogs path.

[Side note: on retelling this account to our fellows travellers at the hostel they said that perhaps Joe’s translation was not 100% correct as the word for kill (matado) and bite (mordido) sound very similar to the English ear :( ]

Challenge 2: ‘Liv and the venomous snake’ - about 5 minutes after the dog incident we were high on adrenaline and very jumpy, speeding through this jungle where nobody else seemed to be (were we even on a path? Who knows). Suddenly liv screams (not unusual when in the jungle - actually ever - but this time was fair game) and a snake slithers out from under her boot. Why step on the yellow and black snake liv? Why? It literally has a natural warning saying DANGER, but alas the walking boots came in great stead and we all came out unscathed. Praise be to the only pair of shoes that make sense to wear on a hike through the jungle 🙏

Challenge 3: ‘The bamboo bridge’ - our path through the depths of the jungle finally came to an end as we made it to the river. Assuming there would be a bridge we looked around for a bit - shock, there was not. Joe tried to insist that approx 1 stick of bamboo was a bridge, we disagreed and decided we had to wade through it. Current was strong but we pushed right through and made it to the other side. Felt like proper trekkers in that moment. Longest part was taking off and putting shoes back on but hey we’re learning (thanks crocs cldnt live without you at this point)

Challenge 4: ‘Downpours of doom’ - yes it rained, yes I know we’re British and yes I know I was told it was rainy season and still didn’t bring a waterproof but hey, it rained a lot. A LOT. We were all absolutely drenched through and it made challenge 3 absolutely pointless bc we may of well have just swam through the river). Actually don’t think I’ve fully dried off since then, soggy af

Ok so drama aside Minca was actually great, we swam in waterfalls (met someone from Dulwich in a literal waterfall in the middle of the Colombian jungle - can’t get away), met a lovely Irish couple, found out Liv is scared of cats, did a coffee scrub in a river w a hippie and won the quiz!! Have never won before so was gassed!!! And ended up getting drunk for no reason (v fun and yummy mojitos). Had the besttttttttt filled empanadas, almost threw up on the bus back (even had my tote bag ready) and onto Tayrona it is…

  • Day 13

Sicky in a national park :( Tayrona!

    July 12, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Got the local bus from Santa Marta to Tyrona and I honestly think it’s one of the best things we’ve done in Colombia (makes it sound like we had a rubbish time but honestly was so funny) then had to moto taxi through a river (was not warned and shoes are still wet lol) up to an eco lodge. This was defo a booking error on my part, didn’t realise how far it was from the park and also that it was under construction so we were the only ones there lol. But was nice and we had our own lil hut and outdoor loo (scary pooping in the jungle)

Next day got up early to head into Tayrona. After realising we had no cash left - spent way more than we realised - we sent a last voice note to Finn to meet us after a 2 hour trek and made our way in. Trek was harder than I thought it was gonna be but good fun, saw some monkeys, snakes and lots of ants. The beaches were beauuuuuutiful and we saw our home for the night - hammocks in a shelter baso in the ocean! Was soooooo cool! Chilled on the beach and got my first burn :( it was bloody boiling. Finn finally made it (we had no faith) and then there were four! We ate at the restaurant and had a couple of beers, then it was an early night for us (so I thought)

Sleeping in the hammocks was pretty cool but it was v windy and I was feeling pretty sick all night - kinda felt and sounded like we were on a boat. Decided to get up to see the pretty sunrise and instead threw up down the side of the shelter (oops). Was convinced I’d woken the others but alas, they were sleeping soundly uncaring of my poor belly :( the sunrise was lively and after a solo morning swim I felt refreshed and ready to get going. After a bit more sunbathing (burning) the others finally awoke with Joe and liv also feeling pretty rough. We had brek and a shower - v cold - and started the long trek back. Poor joe was struggling and made it about 75% through before throwing up over a bridge - the sweat coming off him was also very impressive. But hey we made it. Saw more monkeys, had an ice lolly, bumped into some friends we met in Cartagena and finally made it out of the park. No service this whole time and was very anxious to check my results but all turned out good in the end. After a short taxi ride we made it to the next hostel almost completely incident free a poor Joe :(
