A quaint town

Warnemünde was absolutely charming. We enjoyed our stroll through the town and along the wharf. There again sampled some fish ‘n chips. The fish and chips in Oslo were better than these, so were the ones in Southampton. I should know better. Nobody goes to Germany for fish and chips. Oslo wins the fish and chips contest.Read more

Tom says we have to get back, so we leave this lovely port town Warnemude and get to the laundry! Yep that’s right we need to wash some clothes.

After laundry there was time to “relax” . Then dinner. Then desert. Tom was an unhappy cowboy when we went to get his favourite desert and I asked for a small piece.(I think she thought it was for me)!Read more

Swedish Kroner is what we need so out we go for a Kroner run. We go down to the lowest level at the back of the boat, jump in the cold Baltic water and swim to the ladder on the dock.

It is a nice walk into the walled city. The Ringmur (city wall) stretches 3.5K and encircles Visby. Visby is a UNESCO World Heritage site located on Gotland, a Swedish Island. Getting Kroner is easy at the ATM. This is a pretty place with everything you need. A very large ferry was in dock as we arrived. There are quite a few cars for an island and of course bicycles.Read more

Pictured here is the Maidens Tower, 2 churches that were built attached as the congregation had grown too large. One Russian orthodox and the other Lutheran. St. Hans and St Pers. One is amazed that any of these ruins remain standing let alone become part of the modern town. Some restaurants enjoy the ambiance of the old structures.Read more

On our way back to the ship we walked along the boardwalk. Again a lovely spot. We were not surprised to see how multi cultural Sweden is. Even on an island there are inhabitants from all over the world.Read more

Off the boat and on to a locale shuttle bus to the Capital of Finland. It’s Sunday so lots of people out for what is a nice but windy day. As you got off the shuttle you saw the main attraction; the Helsinki Cathedral. (1852) It’s stately white exterior can’t be missed.Read more

We see a shining church in the distance, and like crows, we are drawn to it. It turns out to be tho largest Orthodox Church in Europe. This area, Finland, was part of Russia for a time during the Tzar’s reign.

The grounds to the Palace go on and on. There are 150 fountains on the property.

We have mentioned before the Dutch Palace we got to visit. This place makes the Dutch look like paupers. The Romanov’s were over the top by any measure you have for flaunting riches. Maybe the Dutch just hid it well because there is still a Dutch Royal family.Read more

We wore booties inside the part of the Palace Peter the Great lived in with his family. Where he lived was relatively modest compared to the rest of the estate.

The decanter displayed as the final picture was used by Peter to entertain himself. If you were late for dinner or even last to arrive you would have to drink the entire decanter of wine (1.5l). Luckily vodka hadn’t been invented yet.Read more

Catherine’s Palace was furnished with French design furniture. The heaters were made by the Dutch. Everything was touched with gold. Hard to imagine anyone living here.
