Aha, I caught Tom sneaking out of our tiny room…I am not going to miss an opportunity to shop!
We donned our 3 layers, toques and gloves and headed out for one last look around Würzberg. It has been windy and raining most of the day, temperatures around 6 degrees. It is Sunday and everything is closed except a few restaurants, the Oldest wine bar in town and the Market in the town square. Locals come out with their families and friends for a visit, a beer or glass of wine on the bridge(this is wine country after all). The vineyard here is 4K long and produces some fine wine.
It was a good walk, fastest pace we have walked in days and it felt good.Læs mere

Pointed Tower (Spitzer Turm)

This 500 year old tower has been leaning a bit for years. Long enough for an attempt to correct the incline by building an extension inclined in the opposite direction. Originally the tower served as a prison for drunkards and quarrelsome wenches.Læs mere

Burg Wertheim

Wertheim Castle, constructed in the 12th century, is a bit of a hike from the town. It is a well preserved ruin that affords excellent views of the surrounding area.

From the town, Dianne thought that a hike up to the castle would be a good idea. Half way up the rugged hill, she was rethinking her commitment to the castle due to the height and vast open view. We made to the top, but I had to horse whisper Dianne to get there.Læs mere

Wernheim is such a charming town. More over it is so friendly. We would definitely come back here for a visit. Our guide is proud to be from Wertheim and is willing to put up with the frequent flooding that occurs in the town.Læs mere

Trip down the Rhine river. We made a stop along the way to meet an ambulance and medevac for a fellow who had a bad fall.

Marksburg Castle

Marksburg Castle is just outside of Koblenz. The coats of arms in the picture are those of the proprietors of the castle. The second last one from the left is that of the German Castle Society who have managed the property since about 1900 till now.Læs mere

Life in the castle

Marksburg castle has been here since 1100. There has been some renovations and new owners and such. According to our guide it has been sold the the new occupants every time. Never been taken by force.

Another big church. What I enjoyed about this one is a story our guide told us about the stained glass. One picture of the glass clearly shows a modern style compared to the original. The Arch Bishop of Köln didn’t like it and wanted it changed. Others in the church thought it was fine and overruled him. I guess being the Arch Bishop doesn’t carry the same weight as it did in the Middle Ages.Læs mere

It is a cold and windy day here at Kinderdjik. All of the windmills are in working order, and pumped water in the past. Today, water is pumped using electric motors. The idea is to pump water from lands below sea level, behind the dykes, and have some reclaimed ground you can cultivate.Læs mere

One more interesting fact is that many of the windmills are inhabited. You need to be licensed as a millwright, and then you can apply to live in the windmill. You pay rent, but it is reasonable and you have to maintain the windmill in working order as part of the agreement. Not really for us, even if I was a licensed millwright, but would be cool to say you live in a windmill.Læs mere

Last day with new friends

We met some nice people on this trip. There was 180 people on the boat and we think there was 7 Canadians, 18 Australians and the rest American. Didn’t meet any Kiwis. We got along well with the Aussies and also met some very pleasant Yankees. We didn’t talk politics very much, mostly conversations about previous travel and grandchildren.Læs mere

Last thoughts…

Dianne and I felt that this group was a little old for us. We like to go at a faster pace than the average person on the river cruise. We also did not realize there were 67 locks to pass through. There were 4 days of being on the ship in the afternoons with no where to go. The upper deck was closed.

The food was excellent and the staff on board were first rate. We learned a lot about European history on the various guided tours. We might do this again, but it will probably be at least 5 or 6 years from now.

It is good to be home but we do miss the meals prepared for us and the dishes done. Also our room was tidied and bed made each day. As they say, welcome back to reality😂
