    On the Road Again

    May 14, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

We left home yesterday right on time at 7 AM just as the rain started. The car was already packed to the hilt, with just enough room to see behind us. Picking up Angela and Catherine, we were on our way at about 7:30. Heading through LA, MS & Al, the rain followed us but gave us a break after our Honey Baked Ham lunch (with a bakery next door). Then onto the Unclaimed Baggage Store in Scottsboro, AL. With a full car, I didn’t expect to buy anything, but I found a very nice opal necklace that fit nicely in my purse!
Traveling on to Chattanooga the scenery was beautiful. Did you even know there was an International Towing & Recovery Museum? Yup! In Chattanooga. We had dinner at the City Cafe Diner, where they say you get good food and plenty of it. They are not kidding! And the bakery is even better.
We found an IHG property with a nice suite for the night where, of course, we played Rummykub on our little kitchen table and enjoyed our bakery snacks. Sleep quick my friends.

  • Day Two, It Must be Tuesday

    May 15, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

Tuesday we woke up in our Stay bridge Suites one bedroom suite in Chattanooga. Highly recommend this IHG chain. After a nice breakfast we headed for the Incline Railroad, the steepest incline track, they say, and I can’t imagine they are wrong. Taking us up a mountain to a spectacular view - of fog! But well-worth the ride. Of course, there was a shop and lots of sweets at the top.
From there the rain accompanied us to some Mennonite farm stands on our way to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. After driving around looking at the sights, we enjoyed dinner at Smokey Mountain Brewery, a quick trip into Taste of Europe, (a small Eastern European market) and checked into another Staybridge Suite in Pigeon Forge. This property is only 9 days old and our balcony came with a beautiful view of the mountains and a breakfast room “on the roof” with outdoor seating. Tonight, Mexican Train was our game of choice.

  • Goodbye Tennessee, Hello Kentucky

    May 15, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

First things first, the wildlife of Pigeon Forge forced us to slow down as they proudly walked their baby geese across the road.
Then we shopped at Smokey Mountain Knife Works, in Sevierville, TN, the world’s largest knife store with 3 floors and 108,000 square feet of every piece of cutlery and weapon you could possibly need.
After that it was truly a road trip, traveling highways and byways.
We came along the Norris Dam and Marina.
Then, seeing a sign for the birthplace of KFC we found lunch, and a great tribute to the Colonel.
Then the backroads with trees, lots of trees and winding hilly roads, we landed in the little Artisan town of Berea, KY.
We shopped at the Lindsey Gallery where the nicest couple sold the jewelry they made themselves. Angela and I just couldn’t resist!
Taking the Interstate Catherine did a great job of driving through a stretch of downpour to our Staybridge Suites in Lexington. Catherine relaxed while Angela and I had dinner at Drakes and grabbed ice cream at Kroger’s before heading back to our game of Mexican Train.

  • Ark Encounter

    May 16, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

Today was a long day, spent at the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, KY. We chose a great day to visit. The day was sunny, not too hot, before kids were out of school for the summer and a weekday! Perfect timing, being able to really observe all the exhibits. A visit is highly recommended.Read more

  • Zoo at the Ark Encounter

    May 16, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

Why was it such a surprise that there is a zoo by the Ark? It was nap time, but some of the animals were active. My favorite part was actually visiting the kangaroos inside their fence. Amazing!!

  • Bourbon & Thoroughbreds

    May 17, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

This morning we traveled the Bourbon Trail through Kentucky on our way to Churchill Downs. Seeing the sign for Woodford Reserve, THE Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby, we couldn’t resist. Catherine enjoyed a book while Angela and I enjoyed a tour, saw the process from fermentation to bottling. Then we learned how to truly enjoy the aroma of the bourbons and whiskeys of Woodford, and how to drink it to appreciate the flavor.Read more

  • Churchill Downs

    May 17, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Home of the Kentucky Derby, some folks attending the races, were wearing hats and fascinations. We arrive late, but in time to shop a bit before enjoying a tour. Our tour guide Steve walked us right down to the track, where races were actually in progress. We got to see the horses parade with their track ponies that offer support and guidance to the race horses who might otherwise be disturbed by the crowds and noise caused by the spectators. We were at the finish line, so we saw the horses led into the starting gate, the gate moved, to be out of the way, and watched #2, my choice, win the race. Best part, I have now seen a horse race in person, and it was at Churchill Downs!Read more

  • Home Again, Home Again!

    May 18, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Hit the road in Kentucky at 9:30 AM after a stop at Dunkin’. Staying in a two bedroom suite, we didn’t see how each other dressed. But look at us! Even down to our new bracelets! Think we’ve been traveling too long together? Our first stop was Buc-Ee’s. Our last meal on the road was Wendy’s, showing you we were ready to be home! It’s 8 PM, I am unpacked and after 1825 miles I am appreciating my recliner.
We had quite a bit of rain. But no lost possessions, no tickets, no accidents, no one’s dead and no one is in jail. Hugs all around when we got home. It was a wonderful trip.
