  • 🌜Blood Mountain Shelter

    7. mars 2025, Forente stater ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Hiked 13.2 miles today in beautiful 55°F weather to arrive at Blood Mountain Shelter- at the top of the tallest peak Georgia has to offer on the Appalachian Trail. The final approach was more than an hour of steep uphill hiking but my timing could not have been more perfect. I set up my sleeping bag, etc and it was time to watch the sunset. The shelter on this site is made of stone and it’s over 100 years old. People generally don’t like to stay here because it’s cold and windy but I’m super cozy in my best winter outfit 🤩 Reviews of this location included tips not to stay here in the summer due to bat activity 🦇 😱. Well, I’m here solo tonight and looking forward to catching up on sleep and no snoring… and maybe getting up early for the sunrise before heading down.

  • Leaving Blood Mountain

    8. mars 2025, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

Got an amazing nights rest in the old stone shelter at the top of Blood Mountain. Woke up early for sunrise and it was magical. My hike down from the peak was enchanting: a forest teeming with moss, twisted wind-swept trees, and footpaths carved carved by decades (centuries?) of exploration .Les mer

  • Strange tradition @ Neel Gap

    8. mars 2025, Forente stater ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

There is an amazing outdoor equipment store at Neel gap and it’s really the first opportunity right on trail to buy supplies. Super nice and helpful people there. Community gathering space, excellent selection. I loved the store but didn’t need to buy much other than a couple specific food items- lots of temptation though. There seems to be a tradition of buying a new pair of boots and throwing your old ones up in the tree out front 🤷 …well my boots are fine for now. Haha. Also- see photos to read history of the namesake for slaughter and blood mountains.Les mer

  • Mega Trail Angels at work!

    8. mars 2025, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

“Trail magic” is the result of “trail angels” essentially people who give gifts and services to hikers. Usually they are fellow hikers in the local community. It can be as simple as a cooler full of cold drinks. This one I went to today was AMAZING… fruits and veggies. Soup, PBJ, pickles, Hot and cold beverages. Camping supplies. First aid supplies. Comfy chairs and blankets to relax in…They even advertised their location on trail! These are gifts and no payment is accepted. What wonderful things people do!Les mer

  • THIS DOG is through-hiking the AT

    8. mars 2025, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

There is a couple hiking the trail with a Teacup Yorkie . I can’t decide if it would be harder for her (short stride) or easier (more legs)! Your 2¢ please? Sorry, not sure what elf on a shelf is doing there 🤷Les mer

  • 🌜Low Gap Shelter

    8. mars 2025, Forente stater ⋅ 🌙 7 °C

14 miles of hiking today in beautiful weather. Excellent trail magic, familiar faces of fellow hikers as we leapfrog each other throughout the day. Camping tonight in a tent (shelter is full). Clear skies now with amazing moonlight and bright stars! Rain forecasted for tomorrow so I hope to get up early and pack out before that starts 🤞 [mile 42.9 of the AT]Les mer

  • Day trip to Helen GA

    9. mars 2025, Forente stater ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Talking to locals this was a failing mill town in the 1960’s until a group of property owners came up with a plan to create a Bavarian village destination, and voilà! It feels like the Main Street of a theme park. Lots of gift shops. I wasn’t expecting to find an alpine slide ride here! That was fun.Les mer

  • 🌜Um, an unplanned hotel stay

    9. mars 2025, Forente stater ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

I hiked about 10 miles to Unicloi Gap and shared some snacks with folks on trail, then I decided to head into town to discover the wonders of Helen GA. These wonders include a lot of gift shops, live bands, Bavarian-styled tutor architecture (faux, but quaint and well maintained), some restaurants and an amazing alpine slide ride. It got dark quickly (spring ahead!) so I tried to get a ride back to the trail but there were no drivers available, and the only taxi service I could get to answer was asking a lot of money for a short ride (not to mention he wanted me to wait an hour for him). So the most logical/safe choice was a hotel, and there are plenty of low price options. Hot shower and some makeshift laundry in the sink will go a long way tonight. Weather-wise today was great but they are saying rain tomorrow morning- hoping to miss the worst of it. We’ll see. [mile 52.7 of AT]Les mer

  • Rorschach Test: Burled Wood

    10. mars 2025, Forente stater ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

What do you see? (Give me something specific please. No wrong answers. I appreciate your comments, they entertain me 😂)

  • 🌜Tray Mountain Campsite

    10. mars 2025, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

I discovered a secret and enchanting labyrinth of tent sites here at the top of Tray Mountain (4398ft). It’s impossible to capture how magical this spot I found. I noticed a curious little trail heading down the slope. I figured maybe people were using that for bathroom purposes - but the trail goes on and on, twisting and turning and tunneling into the trees until I arrived in a small clearing, surrounded by moss and twisted branches with a little fire pit. It’s so dreamy here. But the trail continues even further to a private lookout rock with nearly 360° visibility! … and the trail continues yet further to even more secret campsites below the rocky cliff. Really special location.

More generally for today, I got a late start somewhat intentionally due to a stubborn drizzle, and I timed my shuttle ride back to the trailhead perfectly. There was time for lunch and one last walk around Helen before meeting my driver back at the hotel. As luck would have it, I had cool/overcast —but more importantly DRY— hiking all afternoon until I ducked into the woods right before dusk to set up camp.

As the sun set I made a quick dinner and relaxed in the hammock briefly before heading to bed. It’s cold on the mountain top (and windy!) but I’m layered up and should be cozy in my tent. Looking forward to tomorrow- The sunrise here should be amazing!

  • 🌜Plum Orchard Gap Shelter

    11. mars 2025, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

16 mile day! …And I’m feeling it to be honest. Lots of up and down, total of 4038ft climbing 😳 and the temps today hit the mid 70s which felt almost hot. staying the night in a triple decker shelter with a bunch of random folks. Campfire is going- someone is playing a guitar, others roasting marshmallows… seems like a pretty chill vibe!

  • My Unabomber Look

    12. mars 2025, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

The sun is no joke- none of the trees have leaves yet so I’m covering up and protecting my skin. SPF hoodie with long sleeves, glasses, visor cap, sunscreen, and lip balm! If a shadow is cast I’m in uniform!Les mer

  • Bear management? 😬😭😱

    12. mars 2025, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

People have been asking me about bears. There are a lot of resources for hikers to prevent problems, including education (for us! Not the bears😂) bear lockers at most shelter locations. Haven’t seen any bear activity but I do carry bear spray and I have been practicing drawing it (they say you only get 2 or 3 seconds if one charges at you). I also practice safe camping- have a solid bear container for all my food, trash, and toiletries… and I never store food in my tent.Les mer

  • 🌜Standing Indian Mountain Campsite

    12. mars 2025, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

13.8 miles of hiking today - it was a tough one with lots of uphill: 4,500 of climbing. I also made it into a new state! Welcome to North Carolina! Beautiful sunset here at the top of the mountain with some primitive camping just below the crest. Looking forward to a quiet night’s rest after a strenuous day! [mile 87.7 of the AT]Les mer

  • Face in stone

    13. mars 2025, Forente stater ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

I see things in the forest that resemble faces all the time (maybe you do too?). Trying to post only the best ones. Check out these chiseled features! This rock was just in the footpath of the trail and a seed pod had landed perfectly for the eye! Nature is amazing!Les mer
