What an incredible welcome from Iceland! We had a great lunch buffet in a tent right in front of the lake, it was breathtaking!

Maríuhellar lava caves

This was our first excursion and my introduction to lava caves. We set off with our headlights and gear and went inside. The cave was beautiful!

There was a skeleton of a lamb that got stuck there during a storm and couldn't find its way out. The ceiling was shimmering in a silver colour, due to very tiny bacteria that lives there. We turned our headlights off and stopped talking, and the only thing you could hear were the water drops that made their way through the rock above and fell on the ground. It was magical.

Some of us decided to visit the narrowest part of the cave, while some others waited for us outside. We crawled and walked on all fours through the cave, until we made it to what they call Shark's mouth: a wide room that ends with a much narrower part with the roof covered in small pointy stalactites. I'm glad I decided to visit the additional part, it was gorgeous!Read more

Dinner at the Whales of Iceland exhibit

While the whales are just reproduction of the real ones, being surrounded by these 1:1 size incredible animals made for a really magical dinner!

Golden Circle: Þingvellir National Park

It was a quite gloomy day, especially compared to the day prior, but that takes nothing away from the amazing view!

This is the founding place of the oldest existing parliament in the world. It is also where the huge tectonic plates of America and Eurasia drift a part and the rift valley is there before your eyes on the shores of Iceland’s biggest lake.

Golden Circle: Geysir

My first ever close up experience with a Geysir! The main one would burst every 4 minutes or so. The air was quite pleasant around it and the areas surrounding the geysirs and hot springs were protected (the water is incredibly hot!)

After seeing the geothermal area, we set off for lunch at an Icelandic horse farm. While Icelandic horses are generally smaller than the average ones, they are not ponies (and locals hate it when they are called like that).Read more

I didn't take any pics, it was super windy! We got caught by a hailstorm as well, which made the whole thing as unpleasant as it sounds.

My guess is that the place is much better on a milder day. Getting in the pool, during the rain and with the winds wanting to take out faces off, only to be welcomed by lukewarm water (I am told it gets much warmer close to the source, but I never made it there) was not what I had in mind.

Will try again in the future :)Read more

Golden Circle: Gullfoss

The last part of our Golden Circle tour was at Gullfoss . It was pretty incredible to see the huge waterfall fall, to end up in a rift and forming a river. Worth walking around in the strong winds to see it from different perspectives!Read more
