  • Day 11 - Exploring Hamburg

    2024年6月12日, ドイツ ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

I think today will be the hardest to just choose 10 photos 🙈

On a freezing cold German morning we went to town for breakfast 😋 (it's ment to be summer!!)
Here we got to taste a famous treat in Hamburg called Franzbrötchen.
It is a pastry/bread style with cinnamon and sugar. Delish 🤩

After we braved the cold and I mean bloody cold wind and rain to visit a very cool building that is actually a theatre for music concerts etc. You are able to enter up the most elaborate elevator I've ever seen and walk around 360 to view Hamburg, it's a beautiful view. Guy laughs at how many clocks on towers Hamburg has lol

Next stop was Miniture Wonderland.. wow wow wow wow wow is all I can say. This place was amazing 👏
It is 3 levels of miniture sculptures of towns/airports/landscapes. The attention to detail is incredible, and every 5 or so minutes the lights are replicating the sun cycle so it goes from day to night 😲
As you can imagine it was hard to pull Guy away from the airport, he could've stayed all day to watch!
This was such an impressive visit, we spent a good 2.5hours looking.

The sun was trying to shine as we walked back along the river, but it didn't last long haha we took a short ferry trip to an unusual looking building, had a look there as it overlooked the port which is impressive and then headed back for a quick nap 🙈 on our way back on the train we met with Celine who also was an Au Pair in Nz when kim was 🥰

We were invited to a BBQ dinner at Kim's family home just a couple of streets away.
We were joined by Kim's family and Celinas family. It was lovely to meet all of the parents, siblings and partners of our girls 🥰
We had a beautiful BBQ dinner, the kids (and adults) have fun playing corn hole 🙈 we shared many stories of the girls time in NZ and had many many laughs 😆 the language was not much of a barrier as all the girls were great help with any translation needed 😀 this was such a wonderful evening we finally stumbled home close to midnight!

It has been another jam packed fun filled day making wonderful memories. We are also getting very good at navigating public transport! Today we took underground train, above ground train, car, bus, ferry 🙈😆

    Day 12 - Exploring Hamburg part 2

    2024年6月13日, ドイツ ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We slept in today 🙈 woke up at 9am!! But it was ok as we had no early plans 😀

Yummy breakfast at Kim's and then off to the city for some more adventures.
We joke that Kim is our Tour guide and Celina is our entertainment 🤣

We went to explore an old underground tunnel that was built in 1907 and opened in 1911 . The tunnel is 450m long and connects one side of Hamburg to the other UNDER the river!!
So when you are in the tunnel you are 20 metres underground and have 12 metres of water above 😲
A few years ago they refurbished the tunnel removing all of the original tiles and then bringing them all back in, quite impressive.

After we caught the ferry to one end of the city to explore a small beach ⛱️ and then we went for a bite to eat over looking the port . The port in Hamburg is massive!
Here we had to say Goodbye to Celine as she was travelling back home for studies, it was so lovely to see her 💕

Back to central station and we went to an illusion museum, here we had so much fun as you will see on the photos! So many things to mess with our minds 🤣

After this we were all quite knackered so home for a wee rest.
Dinner was a few left overs from the BBQ and we fried some veges.
Dessert was a must try "spaghetti ice cream" just tasted like normal ice cream 🤣

I have learnt that there is more than one type of sparkling water 🤣 it comes in light bubbles and more bubbles (apparently this is important 🤣)
Also around town there are a lot of people with dogs and these are allowed in the shops so it wasn't uncommon to be standing in line to pay with a dog next to you!

We had a fun last night in Germany playing card games with Celina and Kim a lot of laughs and a lot of singing lol

A very big travel day tomorrow so time for some 💤 😴

    Day 13 - Hamburg - Berlin - Iceland 🇮🇸

    2024年6月14日, アイスランド ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Another Goodbye today 😢 We woke early to make our train and said farewell to Kim & Celina 😢 We had such a good time in Hamburg 💕

Lucky we had Kim and Veronika's help as our train had been canceled and changed to another one but we eventually got it sorted!
We are getting very good at the public transport now 🤣 we managed to get ourselves through Berlin train station and onto another train to the airport. Berlin train station is huge!! I think it has 4 levels of platforms!

Navigating the airport was easy and we made our plane to Iceland 🇮🇸
We had a good flight and the view coming into land was incredible 😲

We landed and again we couldn't believe how easy it was to get through customs. There was no customs you just walk out!
On to the bus to Reykjavík town, took about 45 mins, the landscape we saw here was very rocky with little growth and mountains in the distance. We found our accommodation easy just a 2 min walk from bus station.

We walked to dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe, it was their 53rd Birthday today so we received free dessert 🍨 👏

Had a wee walk around the city then home for a sleep another early start tomorrow 😴
It does not get dark here so tonight will be interesting 🤣

  • Day 14 - Reykjavik to Siglufjordur

    2024年6月15日, アイスランド ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

6am start and we were too tight to pay about $150 nzd to get a taxi to the airport so we walked with all our bags about 1.5kms lol turns out we didn't need to hurry as we got to the airport before it even opened 😅
Turns out they very much run in Island time here haha.
Checked in sat down and had some breakfast then we got a text to say due to adverse weather your flight may not depart 🙄 about 20 mins later they called us to board thank goodness!
The adverse weather was just some low cloud.
We had a good 35 min flight to Akureyri, the view from the air is just amazing.

It was sooo lovely to get off the plane and see Andrew, Dagny, the kids 🥰 We set off in two separate cars to explore!
1st we went into Akureyri and found a cafe open to have coffee and cake 😋 Akureyri is a gorgeous town, it had 2 cruise ships docked and one was huge, made the other look like a toy! Then we took a drive up to the ski field which over looked the town. The view here with the mountains to each side is incredible 😲
Then we took Guy to an Icelandic Aviation Muesum here he was in plane heaven!
Christmas was next on the agenda 🤣 we went to a Christmas shop this was very cool! I got a wee piece for Christmas at home 🏡 turns out Iceland have 12 Santa's and there is Santa's mum Gryla who if your naughty she cooks you up in a pot 😱 she lives in a cave at this xmas shop 😉
From here we trusted Andrew to get us to the ice cream farm, he knew where it was and didn't need google maps 🙄 turns out he did need them as we traveled about 10 mins past it 🤣
The Ice cream place is situated at a farm where they market their own ice cream, meat, colostrum (yes to buy and drink) eggs, we had yummy as ice cream 🍦 sitting in the sun. The farm was a free for all to explore so I was looking in the barns 🙈 found a de leval robot and had some cow pats 🥰 no idea what breed lol but the udders are terrible!
We set off towards Andrew and Dagny's and stopped in at an ancient viking settlement that was used as a trading area.
Here I still cannot believe the panoramic views 🥹
The trip home was amazing, many mountains, snow, sea, and huge huge tunnels that go through the mountain!!
And then we arrived home. I knew Andrew and Dagny lived with a mountain behind them but wow this place is next level! I am I'm love with this view 😍 words cannot describe it is actually breathtaking 🥰

Lovely BBQ dinner, the kids have been in the hot pool that is just filled from the hot water in the ground 😲

I lie here on the couch in great company, there is no wind, looking out the window and actually cannot believe what I see 🥹 so lucky to be here 💕

  • Day 15 - Whale Watching

    2024年6月16日, アイスランド ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Great sleep in today! So dark in the basement of Andrew and Dagny's house we are lucky as the sun does not set!

Pancakes for breakfast 😋 and then we decided we would go whale watching in a nearby town 👏🐋

We arrived and had to get suited up into extra layers that would keep us warm and dry. We then set sail in an old boat. The sea was pretty choppy today, slightly windy and a bit cold 🥶 (we actually got Guy to wear pants today!)
We were hoping to see the Humpback whale, and we were lucky to see a few today 👏
This was such a neat experience to be so close to one of the largest mammals in the world. At 1st we were viewing them from quite a way and then next thing we were right up close by the boat! (See video!)
    Spotted a couple of dolphins.
We had hot chocolate and biscuits and then set for back to shore.

Headed back home 🏡 and made an early dinner as we skipped lunch 🙈

After dinner around 7pm we drove about 3 mins up into the mountain and played in the snow, we had so many laughs, lots of fun and a few fails before everyone got freezing cold we went home and the kids jumped in the hot tub 😀
Most of today was very low cloud but around 8pm it all disappeared and we had the incredible views again 👏
    Bloody love this place! 🥰
Tomorrow is Icelands national day so let's see what adventures we do tomorrow 😍🇮🇸

  • Day 16 - Iceland's 80th Birthday 🇮🇸

    2024年6月17日, アイスランド ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

One thing I forgot to mention yesterday was how relaxed it is in Iceland. When we went whale watching I was expecting to have a sit down safety briefing.. nope not here lol we jumped on boat, no life jackets and got told to just stay in the boat 😅

Another sleep in today 🙈 no one wants to get up haha

We found all the kids a bike each and off we went down the little village here to view the Herring Museum. This was very interesting the Herring trade back in day brought in 40% of Icelands whole economy at stages. We got to see boats that were used and also the sleeping quarters the woman and men boarded in.

Kids needed ice cream after that so we went to a kool shop that was a barbers and a cafe, had paninis and ice cream on waffles 😋

Then we went to the neighbouring town where there were some festivities going on for their national day. Soon after we arrived they opened the big waterslide up and my gosh it was huge. It was an old ski jump. The first few kids literally got some air as they went over the jump. Ari was brave enough to give it a go 👏 more than once!!

We then went to the beach and met with some of Dagny's friends as they like to take a dip in the sea 🌊 🥶 Guy braved the cold and went for a dip! Brrrr!!

This was alovely hour or so but then suddenly the wind got up and it was freezing so off home to pop some tea on, Andrew took care of this so Danny, Dagny and me when for a nice 7km run. Danny ran on ahead on the way back and as we were coming past the wee pond (just has melted snow running into it) she said she was gunna go for a swim, so I said ah why not I try also 🙈 so we hopped in our bra and undies into 2° water 🥶 then walked the last 100m home half naked for a warm shower! I was surprised I could do this 😅

We had another lovely dinner I even shared a small Red Wine with Dagny to finish another lovely day.
The weather here to day was just beautiful 😍

Day 17 - Half way through our holiday

    2024年6月18日, アイスランド ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

    A quieter day today.
We woke to lovely weather again, we've been so lucky.
Our kids were so keen to go back up the mountain and play in the snow ❄️
It took bloody near an hour to get everyone in the correct gear (well done Andrew, Dagny was at work) and off we went. Started walking up to an area and Danny disappeared into a hole 🙈 so scraped that idea and went down the mountain a bit. Guy was getting snow down his boots, Kelsey ended up quite wet, all kids were a bit tired (and adults 🙈) so most of us piled back in the car and Ari & Guy & Kels slide most of the way down the mountain towards home 😅

Slower afternoon until Dagny came home then we put the men on dinner duty while Dagny and I took the kids through the tunnel to the next town to the pools. Unfortunately the waterslide was not working but we have fun all the same, was nice to be in the hot pools. Pools were outside and warm and the air 10°.
It's mandatory to shower here before hopping into the pools, usually a communal shower 🚿

Back through the tunnel home to dinner. Tonight's menu was steak, horse 🙈, spuds and salad. Yes we cooked some horse. Tastes a little like corned beef but more salty.

We sit down now to make plans for the next 48 hours as we need to make our way 5 hours by car to Reykjavík to fly out Friday morning.

    Not many photos today sorry!

Day 18 - Siglo to Borganges

    2024年6月19日, アイスランド ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

    Goodbye Siglo 👋
It has been wonderful staying at Andrew & Dagny's we will miss the wonderful views 😢

It's a wet miserable day and we are heading towards Reykjavík. We took the scenic route from Siglo, Andrew is a bundle of knowledge about the country as we drive along, he has told us so much about the landscape etc.
1st stop our trip was a viking museum with a twist.
We learnt about the viking battles of Iceland and then went into a VR room and were able to experience being in a real battle it was a very neat experience!
2nd stop was turf houses. These are houses made of earth and grass! This was super cool to have a look around, quite amazing the way some used to live (and some still do). We even found metal shoes they put on cows feet to help them in the snow!
Next was the longest part of the drive, about 2.5 hours and we made it to a volcano that erupted about 3000 years ago. Here we could walk to the top and got a great view of the crater and the lava the had spilled out. We could also see old sheep pens that were made of lava rock 🪨

This left us 25 mins from our accommodation. Accommodation is very expensive here so we managed to find some cabins that were a reasonable price, definitely nothing flash.
Unfortunately for us we walked into ours and noticed the sheets were definitely not clean.. 🤢 after no luck getting hold of anyone to get clean ones we worked out a cabin near us is not occupied tonight so we made like vikings and stole their sheets 😅🙈

It was now time to feed the troops so we drove the short distance to town and had pizza 🍕 then we went to a delicious ice cream palour 🍨

Back to our cabin for what we hope will be a good sleep 🙄🤣 ready for our last day of Iceland adventures tomorrow 😀

  • Day 19 - Back to Reykjavik

    2024年6月20日, アイスランド ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

An average night sleep in our cabins 🙈 yuck lol

We set off to Reykjavík the Capital.
1st stop was the Perlan museum. This place showcases all the wonders of Iceland.
1st thing we experienced was a 10 min volcano show. This was very kool to see up close videos and photos of the recent erupting volcano.
Next we went to a big dome planetarium here we were dazzled with show of the night Auroa (northern lights) and got a great insight into how they are formed.
Grabbed bite to eat at the rotating restaurant and back at looking through the rest of museum. Here we saw lots more on volcanoes, glaciers, wild life, sea animals. It was also interactive for the kids too.
They had a man made glacier and ice cave inside, it took them 2 years to make and was -15° 🥶
Next stop was something quite different that Andrew came across.. photo graphing our iris in our eyes! As you'll see by the photo it was very awesome!
We found a couple of souvenir shops to get some bits and bobs and then off to the swimming pool to let the kids blow off some steam.
We found our accommodation for tonight and grabbed some Thai for dinner.

    Iceland 🇮🇸
    Its been an incredible week.
Thanks for your free water & coffee everywhere, and also for supplying shoe horns every where you go 🤣
This country is breathtaking, the scenery is something we will never forget. Such a laid back vibe here which we could get very used to. Iceland will be a country that we will definitely come back to visit as 1 week was not enough and there is sooooo much more we want to explore 😍
Andrew, Dagny and the kids have made our stay so welcome, we were spoiled to have their basement as our home and so lucky to have them taxi us everywhere. The kids have got on great, it has been such a wonderful week we cannot thank you enough 🥹
We won't miss the fish smell in every town 🤣🤢or Andrew's "yummy" dried fish chips 🤮

We will be lucky to get 5 hours sleep tonight as we head off to the airport early to the UK 🇬🇧

Here it is the longest day today so very bright outside!

    4am start 🥱
Huge thanks to Andrew for also getting up early to take us the 45 min drive to the International Airport.
Managed to get all through the airport and onto the plane, had to get taken to the plane by bus!
    Goodbye Iceland 🇮🇸

We made it to the UK! 🇬🇧
It was wonderful to see Cory, Hollie and Leo through the doors after the long 4 years! 🥹
Once we navigated the way out of the parking lot, off we went home only 20 mins from Gatwick.

We are so lucky to have a nice cabin at the end of the garden to spread our wings out of our suitcases for a while! 💕

And we got to put on shorts!!! The weather here is wonderful about 23°

We popped up to get Tyler from school he was very excited! Not long after we were home the kids braved the pool it was about 22° a little cold for me haha

The kids are getting on so well and Leo is loving watching them play!
After a beautiful dinner in the Garden a very relaxing evening in store it been a long day but we are so happy to be here 💕
