  • Emu Bay

    April 14, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

    Sparkling day!

The beach ranks among the most popular on the island due to its clear waters, long shoreline, and the fact it is one of the few Kangaroo Island beaches with direct vehicle access. The unique Emu Bay shale geological formation is another signature landmark, while a small fishing jetty dates back to 1918.Read more

  • Stokes Bay

    April 14, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

On arrival we checked out the council campground - just a dust bowl and one toilet (albeit flushing!)

The secluded beach at Stokes Bay is protected from the pounding surf by a giant pool surrounded by rocks. Voted Australia's Best Beach 2023, Stokes Bay is a surprise as this tranquil location can be found by walking east of the bay, following the signs pointing to the 'Beach' and make our way through the headland of boulders forming a tunnel-like path to a pristine white sandy beach with a sheltered rock pool.

Back to the dustbowl for picnic lunch of egg sandwiches.

  • Snelling Beach

    April 14, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Snellings Beach is the most visible and most popular on the north coast, for swimmers and cars! The 660m long, northwest facing beach receives waves averaging over 1 m, which maintain a 100m wide surf zone dominated by four beach rips and permanent rips against the rocks at each end.Read more

  • Western River Cove

    Apr 14–15, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

A secluded little beach with Middle River flowing down to the ocean. Beautiful clear water and amazing algae covered rocks.

We decided to stay here for the night at the council campground reserve - a slight wind but we have camped next to the large bbq shelter and stayed in here until bedtime!Read more

  • Cape Borda

    April 15, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

A very corrugated road out to this spot - Shackle Road is closed during winter.

The lighthouse was built in 1858 and is the third oldest remaining and only square stone lighthouse in South Australia. We were the only people at the now unmanned and automated lighthouse. We took the cliff top hike to a small lookout which was worthwhile but very rough!Read more

  • Harvey’s Return

    Apr 15–16, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

After our walk we stopped at the lighthouse keepers’ cemetery where 16 people who worked at the lighthouse are buried.
So as not to spend about 2 hours along mostly corrugated roads to a decent caravan park we decided to stop here for the night. No one else is here, so should be a peaceful night.
This is also the beginning of the Harvey’s Return hike which we’ll do tomorrow.

  • Harvey’s Return hike

    April 16, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

1.5km return hike down to the beach - half of it is very steep, so we were often crawling up the rocks. The Harveys Return Hike follows the original route used by lightkeepers from nearby Cape Borda.

Originally there was no road linking Cape Borda to the rest of Kangaroo Island and all supplies had to be hauled up from ships via a steep steel railway at Harvey's Return then taken to the lighthouse every three months.

  • Western KI caravan park

    Apr 16–18, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Home for the next 2 nights - with lots of friendly wildlife. Koalas way up high in the trees and wallabies grazing at our feet. This caravan park is on the eastern edge of the Flinders Chase National Park and a good base to explore the attractions in this area of the island.

The park is known for its dense bushland, soaring cliffs, untouched white sandy beaches and pristine rivers and lagoons. At the wild and rugged western end of the island, the park is located approximately 110 kilometres from the main island town of Kingscote.

Covering an area of more than 326 square kilometres, the protected sanctuary of Flinders Chase National Park is home to some of Kangaroo Island’s best known natural attractions, and an abundance of native wildlife and wildflowers.

  • Cape du Coueric lighthouse

    April 17, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

First site to visit today was the 1909 lighthouse at Cape du Coueric made from local stone. Apparently it’s now a museum, but it wasn’t open - no signs to say it’s a museum either.

  • Admirals Arch

    April 17, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Our second stop and a total disappointment as the viewing platform was under construction so could hardly see the arch at all, but enroute to the platform were many spots to enjoy the view of the wild coastline and the sea lions resting on the rocks below.Read more

  • Weirs Cove

    April 17, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Third stop was Weirs Cove, a couple of hundred metres east of the lighthouse complex, where there are the remains of the old 3 roomed storage building used by the lighthouse keepers. Until road transport improved in the 1940s, supplies were winched up on a flying fox from the jetty to the storerooms.Read more

  • Remarkable Rocks

    April 17, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Our fourth stop was at the truly amazing Remarkable Rocks which are a group of granite boulders, some 4-5 metres high, of unusual and fantastic shapes, surmounting a large dome of granite.

  • Snake Lagoon hike

    April 17, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

After a late lunch at the old campground (closed due the fires) near the start of the Snake Lagoon hike we took off on this quite rocky and often precarious hike which follows the Rocky River (which was dry) down to a beach.Read more

  • Hanson Bay

    April 18, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Very overcast today, so the bay is probably not looking its best, but you can still appreciate the white sand and turquoise waters.

As we are heading north up Church Rd it starts to rain - hopefully for not too long.

Driving further on you can see that there is still cleaning up being done as a consequence of the fires in 2020 in which 210,000 hectares were burnt (almost half the island).

  • American River

    April 18, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

We decided to treat ourselves by checking in to the Mercure hotel especially since the weather has turned quite cold and windy. We are now booked on the 4.30pm ferry back to the mainland tomorrow. A week has been a good amount of time to really explore KI.
On checking in to the hotel I was asked for my physical credit card as security and this was when I discovered that I had left my small handbag back at the cafe in Parndana. The waitress offered to bring it to American River as she was having a Thai dinner here UNTIL the hotel receptionist told me that the Thai restaurant is closed due to Covid! So back in the car to Parndana (57kms away) to retrieve my bag - so annoying 😝

  • Penneshaw

    April 19, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

Almost time to leave - tomato and couscous soup for lunch at Mille Mae’s Pantry, pumped up the tyres, did some window shopping and wandered around the small township. Checked in at the ferry terminal and then walked along the beach with its jagged rocks.
The ferry trip to the mainland took an hour due to the rougher conditions.
Once off the ferry we drove to Normanville for a booked campsite.

  • Mt Barker

    April 20, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Camped at the Beachside caravan park in Normanville last night - very family orientated with 142 cabins and only 7 campsites - very uninspiring beach.
Stopped at Mt Barker to refuel. The Adelaide Hills Food Market was being held today so had lunch while we were there.Read more
