    D’Estrees Bay

    13 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

D’Estrees Bay is located on the eastern side of the Cape Ganthaume/Seal Bay Park area and is a popular camping, fishing and surfing area. The area also has a rich history including shipwrecks, whaling, farming and conservation.Читать далее

    Emu Bay

    14 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

    Sparkling day!

The beach ranks among the most popular on the island due to its clear waters, long shoreline, and the fact it is one of the few Kangaroo Island beaches with direct vehicle access. The unique Emu Bay shale geological formation is another signature landmark, while a small fishing jetty dates back to 1918.Читать далее

    Stokes Bay

    14 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

On arrival we checked out the council campground - just a dust bowl and one toilet (albeit flushing!)

The secluded beach at Stokes Bay is protected from the pounding surf by a giant pool surrounded by rocks. Voted Australia's Best Beach 2023, Stokes Bay is a surprise as this tranquil location can be found by walking east of the bay, following the signs pointing to the 'Beach' and make our way through the headland of boulders forming a tunnel-like path to a pristine white sandy beach with a sheltered rock pool.

Back to the dustbowl for picnic lunch of egg sandwiches.

    Snelling Beach

    14 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Snellings Beach is the most visible and most popular on the north coast, for swimmers and cars! The 660m long, northwest facing beach receives waves averaging over 1 m, which maintain a 100m wide surf zone dominated by four beach rips and permanent rips against the rocks at each end.Читать далее

A secluded little beach with Middle River flowing down to the ocean. Beautiful clear water and amazing algae covered rocks.

We decided to stay here for the night at the council campground reserve - a slight wind but we have camped next to the large bbq shelter and stayed in here until bedtime!Читать далее

    Clifftop hike path

    Cape Borda

    15 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

A very corrugated road out to this spot - Shackle Road is closed during winter.

The lighthouse was built in 1858 and is the third oldest remaining and only square stone lighthouse in South Australia. We were the only people at the now unmanned and automated lighthouse. We took the cliff top hike to a small lookout which was worthwhile but very rough!Читать далее

    Harvey’s Return

    15–16 апр. 2024, Австралия ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

After our walk we stopped at the lighthouse keepers’ cemetery where 16 people who worked at the lighthouse are buried.
So as not to spend about 2 hours along mostly corrugated roads to a decent caravan park we decided to stop here for the night. No one else is here, so should be a peaceful night.
This is also the beginning of the Harvey’s Return hike which we’ll do tomorrow.

    Harvey’s Return hike

    16 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

1.5km return hike down to the beach - half of it is very steep, so we were often crawling up the rocks. The Harveys Return Hike follows the original route used by lightkeepers from nearby Cape Borda.

Originally there was no road linking Cape Borda to the rest of Kangaroo Island and all supplies had to be hauled up from ships via a steep steel railway at Harvey's Return then taken to the lighthouse every three months.

    Western KI caravan park

    16–18 апр. 2024, Австралия ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Home for the next 2 nights - with lots of friendly wildlife. Koalas way up high in the trees and wallabies grazing at our feet. This caravan park is on the eastern edge of the Flinders Chase National Park and a good base to explore the attractions in this area of the island.

The park is known for its dense bushland, soaring cliffs, untouched white sandy beaches and pristine rivers and lagoons. At the wild and rugged western end of the island, the park is located approximately 110 kilometres from the main island town of Kingscote.

Covering an area of more than 326 square kilometres, the protected sanctuary of Flinders Chase National Park is home to some of Kangaroo Island’s best known natural attractions, and an abundance of native wildlife and wildflowers.

Third stop was Weirs Cove, a couple of hundred metres east of the lighthouse complex, where there are the remains of the old 3 roomed storage building used by the lighthouse keepers. Until road transport improved in the 1940s, supplies were winched up on a flying fox from the jetty to the storerooms.Читать далее

    Hanson Bay

    18 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Very overcast today, so the bay is probably not looking its best, but you can still appreciate the white sand and turquoise waters.

As we are heading north up Church Rd it starts to rain - hopefully for not too long.

Driving further on you can see that there is still cleaning up being done as a consequence of the fires in 2020 in which 210,000 hectares were burnt (almost half the island).

    American River

    18 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

We decided to treat ourselves by checking in to the Mercure hotel especially since the weather has turned quite cold and windy. We are now booked on the 4.30pm ferry back to the mainland tomorrow. A week has been a good amount of time to really explore KI.
On checking in to the hotel I was asked for my physical credit card as security and this was when I discovered that I had left my small handbag back at the cafe in Parndana. The waitress offered to bring it to American River as she was having a Thai dinner here UNTIL the hotel receptionist told me that the Thai restaurant is closed due to Covid! So back in the car to Parndana (57kms away) to retrieve my bag - so annoying 😝

Almost time to leave - tomato and couscous soup for lunch at Mille Mae’s Pantry, pumped up the tyres, did some window shopping and wandered around the small township. Checked in at the ferry terminal and then walked along the beach with its jagged rocks.
The ferry trip to the mainland took an hour due to the rougher conditions.
Once off the ferry we drove to Normanville for a booked campsite.
