Arriving in Ito

Gestern bin ich nach einem kurzen Stop, um mein Cello-auf-Zeit abzuholen, in Ito angekommen, wo ich die nächsten 4 Wochen arbeiten werde. Ito liegt südlich von Tokio an der Küste und in der Nähe des Mount Fuji. Die kleine Stadt hat etwa 68000 Einwohner und ist bekannt für seine Onsen. Onsen sind heiße Quellen, die der zentrale Ort sind, an dem sich die lokale Badekultur abspielt. Ich wohne im coolsten Haus, in dem ich je gewohnt habe, einem über 100-jährigen traditionellen Ryokan-Haus. Was Ryokan-Häuser und ihren Aufbau auszeichnet werde ich noch in einem separaten Blog thematisieren. Neben den Onsen hat Ito eine schöne Küste und ein paar schöne grüne Gegenden im Umland zu bieten. Ansonsten ist es hier sehr ruhig. So ruhig, dass bei meiner Ankunft um 17:00 bereits alles außer Supermärkten geschlossen war. In Ito gibt es also nicht so viel zu tun. Es gibt jedoch an vielen Abenden Musikveranstaltungen oder Feuerwerke, wo Einheimische, japanische und ausländische Touristen zusammentreffen.

Das Team im Hostel ist super freundlich und hilfsbereit. An meinem ersten Abend haben wir Freiwilligen direkt zusammen gekocht (insgesamt sind wir gerade zu sechst, außer mir noch drei Deutsche, eine Australierin und eine Französin). Anschließend wurde ich in die Onsenkultur eingeführt. Dazu später aber noch mehr. Ebenfalls am ersten Tag konnte ich ein paar Orte zum Cellospielen in unserem alten Haus ausprobieren (da, wo ich niemanden störe). Das war echt super. So ein Stückchen Ruhe und Normalität durch das Üben ist echt toll. Ito ist ein toller kleiner Ort, wo es alles gibt, was man so braucht, aber einfach total entschleunigt nach den Abenteuern der letzten Wochen.

Yesterday, after a short stop to pick up my cello, I arrived in Ito where I will be working for the next 4 weeks. Ito is located south of Tokyo at the coast and near Mount Fuji. The small town has about 68000 inhabitants and is famous for its onsen. Onsen are hot springs that are the central place where the local bathing culture takes place. I'm staying in the coolest house I've ever stayed in, a 100+ year old traditional ryokan house. I will address what makes ryokan houses and their construction special in a separate blog. Besides the onsen, Ito has a beautiful coastline and some nice green areas in the surrounding countryside. Otherwise it is very quiet here. So quiet that when I arrived at 17:00 everything was already closed except supermarkets. So there is not much to do in Ito. However, there are music events or fireworks on many evenings, where locals, Japanese and foreign tourists meet.

The team at the hostel is super friendly and helpful. On my first night, we volunteers cooked together right away (there are just six of us in total, besides me, three Germans, an Australian and a French woman). Afterwards I was introduced to the onsen culture. But more about that later. Also on the first day, I was able to try out a few places to play the cello in our old house (where I wouldn't disturb anyone). That was really great. Having a bit of peace and normalcy through practicing is really great. Ito is a great little place where you can find everything you need, but just totally decelerating after the adventures of the last weeks.Lue lisää
