I've only stayed one night there, in South Central area of the city and it was very nice as it was mostly residential. I went for a walk at night and had a great steamboat at a Chinese restaurant. I stayed at E houzz and it was a fantastic place with very friendly and helpful staff. Not sure if I would want to spend any more time in Jakarta as it didn't seem like an easy place to exploreRead more

Jepara is a small port town where you will stop only if you're on your way to Karimunjawa Island. This is why I was there. It's a very small place and if you stay on the beach like I did then food options are limited. I was ok for water with my life straw bottle but for the food I had to use the restaurant in my Jepara Marina Bungalows. It was actually really nice, just a bit expensive for Indonesia. But it's not a big deal, nobody stays there too long. And I could sunbathe on the pier and watch a beautiful sunset. And the hotel was very nice. I would definitely stay there again if I was going back to Karimunjawa.Read more

It's a tiny beach on a tiny island and it was deserted. I had to break into an abandoned resort to get there and definitely got some peace and quiet. It's a bit of a trek from the nearest source of food or drink. It was nice after a 2hrs boat ride to the island. I looked at it and thought it would be very nice, I mean that boat was enormous so surely we won't be able to feel a thing while at sea. I was soooo wrong. This enormous boat rocked in every possible direction for the entire 2hrs. Crazy. But the slow boat takes 4 to 5 hrs and doesn't depart every day so I took my chances. And you kind of get used to this situation and stop thinking "we're all going to die" after a while. I'm pretty sure some people went out to vomit a few times. My hostel on the island was lovely. Very hippie vibe where everyone shares a fridge, your breakfast is made as you get up by the owners and you can really relax there (if you're not too fussy about ants and mosquitoes) they even started an English language school for local kids. Oh and they have a beautiful cat. It's the place where I experienced the best laundry ever - you'll know what I'm talking about if you go there. Also that's they picked me up from the ferry - on a scooter. And I had a massive backpack and the road was full of pot holes. Happy times :)Read more

It was a lot of mud. Not the kind you slip on, the kind that sucks you in like a swamp. Some people lost their shoes (briefly) and I was close couple of times but managed to hold on to them. They were not in a best state afterwards. The trek was a few hours long and not difficult apart from the time we had to cross a river walking on two overturned tree trunks (much too narrow and much too wobbly) and when we had to cross over some streams by jumping from one misshapen rock to another. My lonely treks in the highlands were a great success. Mostly because I went on few crazy but guided treks before and developed a brand new outlook on what constitutes an footpath and how muddy is too muddy (it's never too muddy, you just clean your clothes later). I'm very proud I finally got brave enough to spend some time in the jungle myself and my last two days in the highlands were full of just that. Great preparation for Sumatra, I might actually managed to survive it now with my Rambo skills :)Read more

Temples! There were so many! Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu... And all were quite marvellous or at least cute :) if you don't have the time for entire Asia, just come to Georgetown and see all possible types over here. I had plenty of fun hunting them down by local transport or on foot, some were pretty tricky (Khoo Kongsi, so hard to find!!!!) Some pretty far (Kek Lok Si, what a bus ride that was). My favourite was the burmese temple, so beautiful and you can even gamble there! I mean throwing a coin at moving cups might not be Las Vegas but you've got to start somewhere.Read more

I mean I went to Cameron Highlands for 10 days and didn't get bitten by mosquitoes. I spent 2-3 hours in that garden and got lots of bites! Maybe it is a real jungle, who knows. It had a nice beach outside, serving hidious and equally enormous shakes :) I saw a massive lizard there and loooooved the hammock. Ooh that hammock was nice. I want one for myself, maybe I'll get one for Christmas???? Then I'll stop moving around from country to country and just live in the hammockRead more

It's a cute place to spend couple of days in. It's much quieter than Georgetown but also nice, there are some nice cafes and restaurants there, and shopping is really good. There is a lot of red everywhere, even the floor in my bedroom is painted in red! I'm staying in yote flashpackers with a friendly, hippie vibe, buy this is the first place where the owners seemed to pity me cause I was on my own...I think they assumed I got dumped after I made the booking because I rented a private room with a double bed on my own. That's what it sounded like when I checked in :) but I don't take it personally.Read more
