Exciting times! We left home yesterday morning at 10h42 and still managed to catch the 11h30 ferry! Beautiful spring sunny day on the road. Visited with Liana and Graycen in the evening in Calgary.

    28 kwietnia 2023, Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

After a very nice visit with grandma in Edmonton, we headed East. Lots of bisons along the way. Although it was a bit early in the day, we decided to stop at Elk Island National Park to enjoy some nature and the warm evening. Many canada geese and ducks in the many lakes and wetlands in the park. Czytaj więcej

  • The Prairies

Lots of birds in Saskatchewan this time of year! More canada geese and miscellaneous ducks, but we also saw a very large contingent of de snow geese!
We stopped in Lloydminster for our first round of disc golf then continued on to Saskatoon where we visited with uncle Lloyd for a couple of hours. Finally, we settled for the night in Guernsey,SK. Perfect little camping spot. Czytaj więcej

  • More Prairies

    30 kwietnia 2023, Kanada ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

Another uneventful day on the road. Weather is sunny, but not very warm at around 12oC. Very windy as one would expect on the prairies. We stopped for the night in the small hamlet of Ste-Anne, just east of Winnipeg. The temperature dropped significantly after sunset. Good thing we brought our parkas! Czytaj więcej

  • Welcome to the USA

    1 maja 2023, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ 🌬 11 °C

We were a bit nervous about crossing into the States with our groceries. In the end, we crossed at Sprague on highway 12 and everything worked out just fine. We had to leave one lemon and one red pepper behind.
Renée called with some great news and in our happiness we managed to get lost in Duluth MN. Turned out to be a good thing, we came across a Bank of Montréal of all things. Grabbed some USD$, and used the free Internet they had (no data in the US).
Duluth is at the western tip of Lake Superior so it is a transportation hub, big ships, massive train yard, and lots of cool old buildings and factories. A really cool bridge too.
Camped at Chinty Lake WI. Nice little spot off the main highway. Close to a rest stop with the best washrooms so far.

  • Looking for a man!

    2 maja 2023, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ 🌬 9 °C

We left bright and early this morning hoping to make good time on our way to Caledonia. After about an hour on the road, we came across what appeared to be an accident up ahead and traffic was stopped completely. We waited for a while, nearly an hour. We could see several police cars up ahead and a small airplane circulating above, so we decided to walk towards the incident to investigate. It would appear that police scanners are not uncommon around here because a lady in the line up had one. She told us that there was no accident up ahead. It was an actual manhunt! The police was looking for someone in relation to a shooting that happened a few weeks prior. Wow! That’s too much excitement for me!
Anyway, the local fire department eventually managed to get most of us re-routed out of this traffic jam and we were back on track by 10h30.
So much for an early start!

We walked along the popular Milwaukee River Walk today. It winds through some old neighborhood like the Historic Third Ward and Beerline B where the famed Milwaukee brew is still being produced.

  • Pinery Provincial Park

    6 maja 2023, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

When we left this morning, we had plans to make it as far as Flint, MI but since we were making such good time, we decided to push to the border. All went pretty smoothly until, as we were slowly approaching the toll booth at the Blue Bridge to cross into Sarnia, ON, the car behind us started honking wildly. At first we ignored it, thinking that it was just another impatient driver. Before long though, we realized that they were trying to get our attention! The spare tire on our trailer had just fallen off to the pavement! Support and all!😳 It was an incredible strike of luck that it fell where it did. I can only imagine the mess had we lost it a few hours earlier in Chicago’s heavy freeway traffic. The added bonus is that we were able to retrieve it without further incident. Let’s hope we can get the support welded back in place during our visit in Toronto.
Once in Canada, we drove to Pinery Provincial Park for the night, a beautiful park along the shores of Lake Huron. We’ll likely leave a bit later tomorrow so that we can enjoy it longer.

  • Toronto

    7 maja 2023, Kanada

Spent the morning at Pinery Provincial Park, walked along the canal, then down to Lake Huron. It was cloudy but warm, made for an interesting transition from sky to lake.
The route to Toronto from the park took us through the backroads, which was quite beautiful much more interesting than the highways. Speaking of which Toronto traffic on a Sunday afternoon— No Thanks!!
Made it to Adriel’s at exactly the same time they got back from coaching. Perfect timing.

  • Toronto

    8 maja 2023, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We managed to get our trailer fixed by a mobile welder who worked in the parking lot of a shopping mall. He did a good job though and added an extra piece to reduce metal fatigue from the tire vibration. Hopefully, we never loose this one again!
It was a beautiful spring day in Toronto so we watched Adriel’s first practice of the season in the sand and played a round of freezbe golf in the park.

  • Volleyball Wrapup

    14 maja 2023, Kuba ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

It was very much a weekend filled with volleyball. We watched, played, analyzed, talked and dreamt volleyball.
    🏐🏐🏐🏐🏐🏐🏐
As you know we were following 3 teams which soon became 4, then 5, then 6, 7 … We made friends with a bunch of teams both men’s & women’s, mostly because we were cheering so loud.
We also rallied every Canadian we met at the resort. So we had the best crowd short of the Cuban teams of course.
In the end the girls finished 10th, with the other women’s team finishing 4th and the men’s team finishing 5th.
The girls spend a few days in Havana, then off to the Cayman Islands for another tournament.

    Devin & Adriel games/scores:

    vs Costa Rica 21-11, 21-13 (w)
    vs Mexico 15-21, 13-21 (l)
    vs USA 13-21, 8-21 (l)
    vs Guatemala 14-21, 21-19, 15-9 (w)
    vs Nicaragua 16-21, 21-16, 17-19 (l)

  • Catching Up

    15 maja 2023, Kanada ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

After getting back from Cuba, we found that our tracking for the trip was turned off ☹️
So this is a random picture montage to try and rebuild our route.
We landed back in Toronto and shared a ride back to the car with two ladies that work for Volleyball Canada, what are the odds?
Then we drove to Kingston, Isabelle’s old university town for a quick jaunt down memory lane. We crossed back into the US, at Ogdensburg and followed the border for a while eventually heading south to Westbrook Maine. Isabelle’s great grandmother worked in the textile factories there in the late 1800’s. We then headed up the coast of Maine.
The state of New York was unremarkable, but Vermont and New Hampshire were very beautiful as was the coast of Maine.

This is the landing place of the very first French colonists who, in 1604, attempted to establish a permanent French foothold on the continent. They built an entire village on the island. Unfortunately, during the first winter which was particularly harsh, 35 of their 79 members perished due to malnutrition and scurvy. The following summer, the settlement was dismantled and moved to a new site which became Port Royal. Czytaj więcej

  • First Day in New Brunswick

    18 maja 2023, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

We crossed back into Canada at St. Stephen and immediately came across the chocolate factory. Unfortunately the next tour was 2 hours away. But we got a brief history lesson, some samples and picked up something for the old sweet tooth.
From there we detoured to Sussex and the birth place of our water baby (our water turbine). Paul the inventor/builder, gave us a tour of the shop and a look at his current systems. We talked details about power generation. Paul is extremely knowledgeable and passionate, we could have talked for hours.
Next we rushed to Moncton to catch Renee’s basketball game. Her team dominated the first quarter leading 26-18. Then the home team took over and things we’re looking pretty grim for the Fredericton Freeze. But the crowd (both of us) cheered them on and rallied the team to a dramatic come from behind victory 92-85.
All this followed by finally reuniting with Renée.

We started the day with Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park. This location has been on my bucket list for a long time! It did not disappoint. We arrived early in the morning, before the park opened. In fact, the park did not open until the next day! Tourist season does not begin until the May long weekend in most places around here, and often later. Anyway, we were able to explore the beach around the rocks at low tide and we came around again to the same view points at higher tide to appreciate the difference. With a 30ft tide, one does not have to wait too long! Czytaj więcej
