Hidden hot springs

This is a place for everyone who wants to experience real beauty of Costa Rica with no tourists and fees. Hot springs right next to a small waterfall are hidden in the forest not far from Santa Elena main area. There are two possible ways, a free one and the one where you have to pay 2000 colones (4$) per person to a woman whose property you will cross on your way to the springs. She doesn't speak English, but is very helpful. She has a cute puppy, lots of bills and horses. The view is stunning and you'll enjoy your hike as much as you will swimming in springs. You can also do horseback ride to the springs but we didn't ask her how much it would be. The water in springs is not hot but rather warm and you really feel like you're in heaven, in the middle of nowhere with no tourists and info centers nearby! Climb inside a tree

A Ficus tree is hidden in the forest and is hard to find. However, you can see a tiny trail leading into the woods which will take you to a hallow tree that you can climb from inside! It reminds a tree from fairy tales and you feel yourself like an elf from the Lord of The Rings. Its a free spot and is perfect for those who is short on budget ( like I was )Read more

Sweet and cheap coffee shop

Right in front of the Monteverde Backpackers hostel a tiny coffee shop opens at doors for everyone who wants to sit and relax for a minute. It is a super cozy place which offers many types of coffee for an average price 1000 colones (4$). The staff is very friendly but they barely speak English. Also remember that Costa Rica is popular for its own coffee which they grow, collect and brew right here; and 90% of local coffee shops will always give you local coffee (which is a MUST try in Costa Rica)Read more

Chocolate experience in La Fortuna

There are several ways to get to La Fortuna from Monteverde and I missed them all. Fortunately, I met a guy who was also heading to La Fortuna by car so we decided to make this road trip together. After couple hours of stunning view at the valleys, mountains and the Arenal Lake we finally reached our destination. However, before finding our hostel we had to stop by a local chocolate store to ask for directions. There we met Ericka, a local girl working in a chocolate shop and dreaming of having her own cocoa farm! She gave us cocoa pods and showed us how to eat them. Apparently, raw cocoa beans have very sweet and fruity outer layer, and you can suck them like candies! One of the best tastes I had in my mouth so far! She also told us everything about chocolate making process and joined us for dinner in La Fortuna! We had dinner in a Soda (local buffets) just like locals and made a new friend who already invited us to her future farm!Read more

Our new local friend told us about the place which tourists don't know about. It's a little lagoon under the bridge close to La Fortuna where you can jump with a rope swing. It's fun, it's free, it's beautiful, it's awesome!Read more

Hike thru Jurassic to swim in volcano

Cerro Chato is a pretty popular place for hiking. It'll take you 1.5-2 h to reach the top of the former volcano where you can swim in a newly formed lake. Expect lots of mud and rain because you'll walk through the rainforest, it'll be tough but worth it. Entire route is very mysterious and stunning, you're walking through the fog and tropical jungles. Swimming in the lake will definitely refresh and clean you! Little hint: there is no need to pay 12$, you can just enter the trail, nobody checks. Hurry up though, this route can be closed for tourists very soon!Read more
