Zambujeira do Mar to Odeceixe, 18 km

Vandaag was de meest gevarieerde wandeling tot nu toe. Rotsen, Acacia bossen, uitzichten, duin, bossen.

Ook was het de meest uitdagende tot nu toe. Stijle beklimmingen en afdalingen waar Debi soms haar rugzak voor af moest doen. Maar niets onhandelbaar of vreselijk eng. Inmiddels hebben we zoveel ervaring opgedaan met wandelen dat we ons uit elke situatie kunnen redden gelukkig.

Halverwege kwamen we de meest ideale camper tegen. Je ziet er veel in deze streek en in deze tijd van het jaar, maar deze was wel heel speciaal. Een soort pipo wagen op het onderstel van een Fiat Ducati.

We kwamen onderweg Nederlanders tegen die hier een huisje hadden gekocht. Ze vertelden ons dat het dit jaar ongewoon koud was in februari. Koud! En wij lopen te snikken in de hitte!!

We hebben vandaag gelopen van negen tot vijf uur. Met pauzes inbegrepen. De afstand was 18km, dus ruim twee km per uur gemiddeld. Dat is niet veel, wat een andere manier is om vast te stellen dat deze etappe best uitdagende was. (Normaliter doen we 3,5 tot 4 km gemiddeld per uur).

Odeceixe ligt van de kust af in het binnenland. Formeel is de Fishermen's trail afgelopen. De meeste wandelaars lopen nog door tot Lagos waardoor dit in praktijk dezelfde naam krijgt.

It was another gorgeous day along the coast, although it was the most challenging so far. Mostly walking along the ocean, with fantastic views and lots of very steep ascents and descents, interspersed by small idyllic beaches. The last 4-5 km was inland, flat and uninteresting, so it was the hardest part of a wonderful walking day.

We are encountering more walkers, sweating and smiling, although not the camaraderie of a northern Camino in Spain. The towns are a little too big for people to end up dining at the same place and sharing tables and conversation, plus we are staying in private rooms in places with lots of accommodation choices. The Algarve region's coast is all tourist towns, which is also quite a different experience than most stops on Spanish Caminos. Also, there is a pack carrying service for this walk, and most people we see (except for the younger walkers) are using it. We are happy that we can still carry our own.

We are eating pizza often on this walk; fortunately mostly quite good, and G is sampling the tiramisu after every one of them. Nice to have more vegetarian options, even if it means a lot of pizza.Read more
