  • First Day in Columbia

    June 29, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 34 °C

We arrived in Columbia around 10:15am. We had a 2 hour layover in Atlanta and planned to have a quick breakfast and I wanted a coffee but 2 hours was barely enough time to get to the gate for our next flight! We had to clear customs in Atlanta and figure we had 500+ people in front of us. It went quite quickly but after customs had to go through security again even though we had never left the secure part of the airport other than being on the actuel plane. I don’t quite understand it. Then took the airport train to get 3 terminals over and to our gate. We did have time for a quick bathroom break but that was it!

Taryn and Eloise and Isaac met us at the airport. We were starving so they ordered delicious bagel sandwiches from Bruegger’s Bagels and Taryn made coffee and we were full and happy. We spent the afternoon relaxing, kids playing, caught minnows behind their house in 35C weather, and watched USA gymnastics Olympic Trials, etc.

Then we just ran out to Target and the grocery store. I was very disappointed in Target. I used to love that store but found it expensive. The girls enjoyed looking at different cereal flavors. Then at the grocery store the variety of Buble and pop flavors was the excitement. $10.99 for 12 mango blue moon was the highlight for me.

We are back home and having chicken enchiladas for dinner. We are planning to have an early bedtime since we figure that none of us got more than 2 hours sleep total while flying last night. Then tomorrow we are off to the beach!!

  • We are at the beach!

    June 30, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

We left this morning around 9:30 and stopped at Costco in Charleston. Then we were off to Folly beach. Our AirbnB lady told us we could check in early at 1pm do that was great. By 3pm we were at the beach. We are across the street and about 4 houses over from the beach access walk way. Super close!!! Also walking distance to all the souvenir shops, restaurants, and bars.

The beach is gorgeous and the water is bath water warm. We had so much fun playing in the waves! And building sand castles and making Eloise into a sand mermaid. We were at the beach for about 2-2.5 hours and are all a bit pink even with sunscreen. We will need to be very careful tomorrow.

We are back at the house to have supper and cool off. Then will walk for ice cream or snow cones this evening.

  • Canada Day morning at the beach

    July 1, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Check out our Canada tattoos and flags. It was cloudy on and off which felt so nice compared to the hot sun. Looked like rain on and off but nothing yet. Back at the place now for lunch and to cool off for a few hours. And hopefully the 2 you get ones nap!Read more

  • Taryn and Meg out on the town!

    July 1, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Thank you to Delaney and Anniston for babysitting. Taryn and I went out for dinner at The Crab Shack. We had oysters, hush puppies and crab cakes for dinner with a fancy drink each. We had to est inside because it was raining on our walk there and during dinner. Then we went to a local brewery and had 1 more drink. The brewery is in between 2 buildings and isn’t even its own building we don’t think. Open air and had a nice breeze. Then we found a geocache on the walk back to the place. Great day.Read more

  • Afternoon while cousins rest

    July 2, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

We went for a walk along the street to check out some of the houses. Such a fun community with lots of people driving golf carts. Then walked back along the beach and saw the other sides of the houses. Then I took the girls to the general store. If you ask me “do they sell _____?” The answer is yes! That is the girls playing piano in the store next to the booze, shirts, sunglasses and incense sticks! I bought the coconut lime sour made in Charleston to try. Sounds delicious on a hot day!Read more

  • 3rd post of the day

    July 2, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

More beach fun. I took 2 pics of girls laying on beach. One looking out over ocean where it looks very overcast. One looking back at the beach to see the blue skies.

We had lots of fun in the waves today.

Isaac liked the bulldozer on the beach. When we got there it was about a 4 foot cliff of sand. You can see the picture of the kids on it on an earlier post today. Guessing the cliff is from the tide and waves? The bulldozer made it a slope instead so you can walk up and down it. Oops. Had to put this video on 2nd post because I can only put 10 pics and 1 video per post.

  • Last morning at Folly Beach

    July 3, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

We got up this morning and headed to walk the pier at 8am. It was gorgeous out. We walked along the beach back to our place and put our toes in the water one last time.

Then we packed up and drove down the island to check out the house that Taryn and Kevin’s wedding reception was held. It still looks beautiful. Then we drove to the end of the street and walked down a cool graffiti walk way to the famous Morris Island Lighthouse. The beach looked beautiful but the signs said no swimming or wading due to strong currents.

We loaded up in the car and headed back to Columbia. It was an easy drive. All the kids napped at least a bit and we beat long weekend traffic. We stopped at Chic-Fil-A for lunch back in Columbia (on my girls’ list while here) and now are back at Taryn’s with the first load of laundry on and all the beach stuff drying in the Sun.

  • Geocaching evening in Columbia

    July 3, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 30 °C

The cousins played some cards before dinner then we headed out for a walk in the forest/nature preserve across from Taryn’s house. The hike was longer than planned but we found 5 awesome geocaches. Eloise loved it!! Hopefully everyone is exhausted and will sleep.

Also a pic of Delaney showing off a cool Buble flavor we don’t have in Canada

  • Afternoon at the pool post #2

    July 4, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Annie learning her front flip off the diving board!

And Taryn and I in the pool. It looks empty because for 10 min every hour the lifeguard gets a break and all kids have to get out. It was so peaceful!! Ha ha. But the pool wasn’t busy. This is where Taryn’s mother-in-law runs the swim on team.

Also, Taryn and I showed off our mad skills on the diving board. Front dive pike, back dive, and even a back flip was done!

  • 4th of July Evening

    July 4, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

The day ended with Uncle Kevin teaching the girls how to light and set off fireworks and having Laney back his truck down the driveway. He said next he is taking her to the gun range!!

  • Mornimg at the zoo

    July 5, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

It was a VERY hot morning at the zoo. We are under a heat advisory and knew it would be hot so we were at the zoo before the gates opened. We were guessing we could last 9-11 and left at 11:25am. By then the “feels like” was 40C or 43C depending on the app. And full sun. There are some indoor air conditioned exhibits which were nice breaks from the heat.

We stopped at Dunkin’ Donuts on the way home which was the last spot the girls had on their list to try while here.

  • Afternoon hanging out

    July 5, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 33 °C

After the zoo we had leftovers for lunch - leftover everything from the last few days. While Isaac napped the girls did puzzles and then we left Laney at home with Isaac napping and ran out to Walmart for a few little things I wanted to grab to bring home. Just some food items we can’t get. Annie also picked up Some make up for her and Laney - I very cheap brand we don’t think we have at home. Overall I have not found the prices cheap like they used to be. Then when you factor in the CDN dollar it is not cheaper at all! There are a few exceptions but not many.

After we came back home the girls tried on Taryn’s wedding dress and a few other fancy dresses she has laying around.

Once Isaac was up we packed a cooler with plans to head to the lake. Unfortunately the parking lot was full and therefore closed so we went to the pool again instead. But lots of fun! Taryn and I now have 2 days of diving under our belts towards our comebacks. 22 years since retirement for me!!!

  • Sat morning

    July 6, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

So this morning we didn’t rush out anywhere. I had coffee and yogurt on the deck in the shade while FaceTiming Brian

Then we headed to University of South Carolina campus to see the football stadium and go to the bookstore to get the girls each a hoodie. This was a gift from their Auntie Tooty. There were so many great options and the girls had a tough time choosing.Read more

  • Lake Murray!

    July 7, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

We headed off to the lake this morning. Kevin brought his fishing boat and we met at the boat dock. He took a load of 3 of us and dropped us off at an island. Went back and got the other 3 and we spent a couple hours swimming in the beautiful lake. The water is warm and the sand is red so very unique to us. It reminded me a lot of Lake Conroe in Texas which is also man made. And both have gorgeous lake front houses to dream of owning.Read more
