    Rapid City, South Dakota

    July 14, 2019 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

Made it to Rapid City, SD! 14 hour drive was long but the weather was great. Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial on tap for tomorrow. Then on to Butte, Montana.

Started early and went to Mt. Rushmore. No pic. Y'all know what it looks like.

Great weather today. Wonderful drive. Rain toward the end. Stopped to put the top up and noticed this sign.

  • Seattle, Washington

    July 16, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

An eventful trip today. From Butte, WY to Seattle. The day started out cool, 62 degrees at 7:30 a.m. My kind of weather, Ed's not so much. The top on the convertible apparently doesn't come down until it is 80. That didn't happen until 2 p.m. Yes! At one of the gas stops, a young woman came up and asked for 4 dollars because their car was out of gas. I said I didn't have money on me. She said okay and then drove off with a dude. Apparently not too much out of gas. I am so suspicious anymore. Then back on the road, stopped at this scenic vista. The Columbia River.
Eastern Washington is so different. Very agricultural and arid, a lot of irrigation equipment. I saw fields of onions, potatoes, lima beans, sweet corn, field corn and alfalfa. I appreciated the roadside sign labels. Then on through the gorgeous mountains. Ready to stay in one place for a couple of days. And a bald eagle swooped down next to the car, and shot straight up, probably looking for some food. Never been that close to an eagle.

  • Seattle

    July 17, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

    A full day.
    Space Needle
    Chiluly Gardens
    Pike Place Market
    Monorail
Valeted the car at the Space Needle, free shuttle to the waterfront. Monorail from Pike Place Market back to Space Needle. BEST DECISION EVER. I thought Chicago traffic was awful. It is nothing compared to Seattle. Nothing. Watched a lovely confrontation between drivers while on the public transit bus. Excellent use of profanity. Donated $5 for a Buddhist temple at Seattle center because the lady was slick. I had a beaded bracelet on my wrist before I knew it. She had a little notebook and I wrote my first name down. Then she wrote $20. I started laughing. I gave her 5 because she was so fast to get that bracelet on my wrist. 😂 She didn't catch Ed. He keeps his hands close and is suspicious of everyone.😂 It was a lovely day! Leaving a day early to go to Mt. Ranier. Washington state is a place that I will definitely return to.Read more

  • Highway 101 Day 1

    July 20, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

I got to see the Pacific for the first time at Crescent City, CA.
Pro tip on using FindPenguins: Don't put your phone in airplane mode to keep it from dying looking for service. It didn't map my route today from Medford, OR to Garberville, CA. Apparently, I flew. I had to attempt to correct it but it is not the same! I will just have to plug it into the car to keep it charged and tracking.

National Redwood Forest was amazing as well.

    Garberville is interesting as well.

  • Santa Rosa, CA

    July 21, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Left Garberville. Drove CA Highway 1 today. Drove through the famous redwood tree. Paid $10 for the priviledge. 😂 Unfortunately, it was a hazy day. Visited Point Arena Lighthouse. Then cut across on Mountain View Highway to get to our hotel in Santa Rosa. That was a white knuckle drive. Multiple switchbacks, steep downhill grades (16%), narrow lanes, no guardrails, no shoulder, and drops of thousands of feet just off the shoulder. The Google Earth map doesn't even begin to show the path. The Google maps screenshot does. You can barely see the road in white. Between Stewart's Point and Geyserville. The Benz' nav is pretty awesome. When we joined route 128 after the drive, it was a surprise to find ourselves in Sonoma county. The heart of wine country. Beautiful drive to Santa Rosa.Read more
