  • Cinema (Silent Night)

    December 19, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Since I've already spent a fair bit of time in Nadi and there's not much to see here, I've pretty much seen it all already so I had a chilled afternoon planned, first up to pop around the corner to the cinema. My decision was vindicated by the fact that it was lashing down.

The film of choice was 'Silent Night' which wasn't the best if I'm being honest. The storyline was rather far fetched and, in spirit of the title, not a single word was spoken by any of the charachters throughout the film (despite only the main charachter not being able to speak).

  • Wailoaloa Beach Club

    December 19, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

By the time I left the cinema the sky had cleared up considerably! I headed down to my favourite Nadi spot of Wailoaloa beach club. To my delight it was 2 for 1 Tuesday on cocktails so I treated myself to four Mai Tai's costing about £13 all in.Read more

  • Lautoka Market

    December 20, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

The bus stop in Lautoka is based at out the back of the town market so naturally this was the first place to explore! I bought two bananas, which I was asked how much I was willing to pay, I offered $1 which was immediately accepted so must have been a good price!Read more

  • Leaving Fiji

    December 21, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

So the time has come to leave Fiji! Think my time here makes it the country I've spent the 4th most amount of time in (UK, Australia and Spain being the top 3!).

This morning I packed up and went for my Christmas haircut, very pleased with the job done by the barber. I then spent a few hours refining my itinerary for Central and South America. Then I set off for the airport!

Some of the notices in security made me chuckle, particularly the top forbidden item being a 'war club', whatever that is.

When purchasing your duty free, they take it off you and then you collected it at the gate to your flight, not had this service before but I'm a fan!

Finally, as I was queueing to board the plane, a family of 4 were stood behind me with one little boy wearing an Everton kit, the first link to Merseyside I've seen in weeks! I started to chatting to them and turns out they're from Birkenhead (now living in Brisbane). It's a small world and the Wirral gets all over it!

  • Goodnight from Australia

    December 21, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

This evening I arrived at Brisbane airport to be greeted by mums bestie Shirley and her husband Martin who will be my hosts for Christmas! We went out for dinner and were joined by Helena, Andrea and little Noah.

After dinner we headed home and I opened my Christmas cards from mum, dad, Nanny Marj, Nanny Cathy and Auntie Sandie which have now taken pride of place at the end of my bed. I've been up since effectively quarter to 4am and it's now nearly 11pm so good night!

Today was a very chilled day with Shirley and Martin. I managed to wash, dry and put away all of my clothes! I also spent much of the afternoon fine tuning my Central and South America itinerary, as well as booking my buses for New Zealand! This evening we watched a few films with cheese, crackers and vodka lime cordial!Read more

  • Morning Mince Pies

    December 23, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

This morning host Shirley led me in making mince pies! I did most of the leg work under her guidance and the end result was delicious! The first mince pie I've ever had and starting on a high.

  • Christmas Eve

    December 24, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Just catching up on some old posts I never did from Christmas!

For Christmas Eve Shirley and Martin hosted the whole family for a feast, music, movies and some early presents. Martin had been preparing the food for days before and it did not disappoint, especially the duck!

Everyone was given their Christmas Eve pyjamas and Shirley made me have a photoshoot by her fireplace!

We finished the night watching the Snowman and Father Christmas before everyone headed off home or to bed.

  • Christmas Morning

    December 25, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

My first ever Christmas Day away from home!

Andre, Helena and Noah stayed over at Shirley's last night so they were here for Christmas morning and Noah opening his presents. He was especially pleased with his model kitchen, and they even decided to save some of his presents for his birthday since he was so content with the few he had already opened!

We then had a delicious breakfast outside with a glass of Bucksfizz.

For Christmas dinner we headed to Dave and Anna's house nearby. First up was a delicious dinner on the patio overlooking the pool. We then exchanged and opened gifts before spending a few hours in the pool.

Sun cream and swimming trunks are two things I never thought I'd need on Christmas day!

  • Shopping and More Drawing

    December 27, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

First up this morning I headed with Shirley to Aldi to buy some groceries for the next few days, including the ingredients to a cooked breakfast!

In the afternoon we went to Anna and David's one last time, which unsurprisingly was mainly spent drawing with Oliver and in the pool.

I had to say goodbye to my new best mate but we promised to keep in touch!

  • Arriving in NZ

    December 29, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

I've now arrived in Auckland where I will remain until mid-February! A little cloudy and drizzly at the moment but the mountainous landscape is already apparent. Of course had to make a start on Lord of the Rings on the flight over and was surprised to find out I'd booked the ticket category that includes a breakfast meal, get me ay.Read more

  • NZ Jamboree!

    December 29, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

After landing in Auckland I took two buses to Hamilton where I was collected and taken to the site of the 23rd New Zealand Jamboree! For the next 10 days there will be 4,500 young people plus 1,500 staff staying at the site, with the vast majority of those arriving tomorrow.

I arrived just in time for dinner which was meat, potatoes and veg with chocolate brownie for desert. I was then shown to my tent which currently only has me in it, although it's split into two compartments and I've picked the one with only one stretcher!

Since the Jamboree doesn't officially open until 8am tomorrow all of the adults here have to wear a high-vis until that time which looks rather amusing. It's quite wet at the moment which looks like it might stick around for a couple of days before getting nicer, although fortunately there is lots of indoor space including a huge hangar which will be used for tomorrow evening's opening ceremony!
