    Mt Aconcagua Viewpoint

    16 мая 2024 г., Аргентина ⋅ ☀️ -5 °C

The furthest (and highest) point of the trip was at the viewpoint towards Mt Aconcagua. Standing at 6,961m, the mountain is the highest point in the Americas, the highest point outside of Asia and the highest point in the southern and western hemispheres. We were some way off the top but it was still freezing, enough so for Dan to hit me with a snowball. This is also officially the coldest footprint I've ever posted at -5 degrees!

After this we began a long trip back which included a stop off for some lunch. The views were spectacular once again!

    Leaving Mendoza

    17 мая 2024 г., Аргентина ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

This morning was another early start as we left Mendoza to head to Cordoba. The 11 hour journey was helped somewhat by the fact that we had the seats on the very back row of the bus, so we were able to recline to our hearts content as we filled our minds with Duolingo, podcasts, documentaries and Football Manager.Читать далее

    Day 200 - Exploring Cordoba

    18 мая 2024 г., Аргентина ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

Today marks 200 days since I set off from home on 1st November!

We started the day by wandering up the main street and towards the park, which was very nice and we actually even ended up a little bit hot at times!

We then stumbled upon an art gallery in a square which some half decent art and as always some not so decent 'art'.

    Argentina Football Murals

    18 мая 2024 г., Аргентина ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

No, your eyes do not deceive you. That is a 40ft tall mural of Cristian Romero.

As we headed into Cordoba on the bus yesterday we noticed these murals so thought we'd head back today to take a closer look.

The mural consisted of 4 of the Argentinian World Cup winning squad (Cristian Romero, Paulo Dybala, Julian Alvarez and Nahuel Molina) as well as two of the backroom staff, all from the province of Rosario, with Romero being from the city himself.

The murals had some great details such as the reflection of Messi lifting the World Cup trophy in Dybala's eyes.

Also attached is a picture of a Messi mural we stumbled upon elsewhere.

    Cordoba Old Town

    18 мая 2024 г., Аргентина ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

By the afternoon we'd made it back around to the old town in the heart of the city centre. A very nice area of town although disappointly the statue in the square does not conform to the horse leg statue precedent.

The two legs off the floor here indicates that the rider died in battle, whilst in fact he actually died of illness in old age.

To get over this disappointment we meandered through the local shops and made veggie chicken, egg and mushroom sandwiches for tea!

Instituto ACC v Union Santa Fe

    18 мая 2024 г., Аргентина ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

This evening was our first of many Argentinian footie games!

An 8:30pm kick off in the Argentine Premier Division between Insituto ACC and Union Sante Fe, just a 15 minute drive to the north of the city.

The atmosphere was excellent as ever and we both really liked the old school style stadium with 4 unique stands. It's also the first time (I think) I've had to watch a game through a fence, and also the first time I've seen all of the security guards stood on the opposite side of said fence.

The home side went behind mid way though the second half thanks to some bad defending and goalkeeping. However within 10 minutes they were level with a spectacular strike from the half way line, literally! A first time effort caught the keeper off his line and sent the home fans into delirium. The excitement for the first half wasn't over yet however as Instituto had a man sent off for a rash two footed tackle.

The second half was less dramatic with the match finishing 1-1, although both sides had their chances to win the game.

Another great game and atmosphere, we're already looking forward to the next, which we won't have to wait long for.

    A Chilled Day in Rosario

    19 мая 2024 г., Аргентина ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

We had a busy day yesterday stomping around pretty much all of the city and a late night with the football too. So we had a bit of a lie in with egg on toast and the League Two play off final.

We ventured out to find somewhere showing the Premier League final day which we did after some wandering! Unfortunately Everton's unbeaten streak (since we arrived in South America) came to an end but all in all it wasn't of any importance.

We found a nice cafe for a late lunch / early dinner before wandering through the extensive evening weekend market and then back to the bar for the locals favourite drink of 'fernet'. Neither of us were overly impressed by fernet.

We headed back to our apartment as darkness fell to watch some more Would I Lie to You highlights. Ready for an early-ish start tomorrow as we head to Rosario!

    Estadio Marcelo Bielsa

    20 мая 2024 г., Аргентина ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Just a five minute walk from our apartment is Estadio Marcelo Bielsa, home of Newell's Old Boys. Named after their former manager who won the league in 1991 and 1992. The club was also home to Diego Maradona late in his career and the boyhood club of Lionel Messi.

The ground itself is a bit of a hole but still iconic to see.

    Central Rosario v Tigre

    20 мая 2024 г., Аргентина ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

This evening we headed 15 minutes north to Estadio Gigante de Arroyito, home of Central Rosario. We'd coincidentally timed our arrival perfectly to make this game, although a 9:15pm kick off was definitely a bit too late of a start!

The ultras were out in force, with the pyros and people hanging off both the back and front of the stand.

The game wasn't the best quality. Tigre went 1-0 up in the first half to a long range effort. It looked like our unbeaten streak was going to come to an end but instead it was extended to 5 games thanks to a 95th minute headed corner equaliser.

Despite the late equaliser the Rosario fans weren't too happy with the result, but as we arrived back home at midnight we were happy with another great new ground and atmosphere!

    Exploring Rosario

    21 мая 2024 г., Аргентина ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

After a late night getting back from the football neither of us ended up waking up until just after 10am! We had 'eggy bread' for breakfast as despite our apartment being wonderful, it doesn't have a toaster.

We then set off to explore Rosario city centre. This included a few squares, the highstreet and the waterfront, with a couple of football murals thrown in for good measure. Dan also picked up a pair of jeans and me a t-shirt to replenish our clothing stock.

    Rosario Sports Museum

    22 мая 2024 г., Аргентина ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

The first stop of today was the Rosario Sports Museum in a southern neighbourhood of the city. The museum is built here as this is the neighbourhood where Lionel Messi took his first steps, kicked his first ball and went to school.

The building is a strange one as whilst being completely open, the top floors are still being constructed. 1.5 of the 2 open floors were dedicated to a variety of sports from weightlifting to motor racing and tennis. It was a really cool museum with lots of quirky features, evidently a lot of investment had been made here!

    Messi's Childhood Home

    22 мая 2024 г., Аргентина ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

After the museum we took a stroll 5 minutes around the block to Messi's childhood home. The area was filled with murals (see next post) and the colours of the Argentinian flag.

There was also a disproportionate number of toursit police cars (given me and Dan were the only tourists we saw), maybe I shouldn't have told the museum we were from Liverpool.

A very modest but liveable house in probably not the best neighbourhood. We stopped for a few minutes to imagine a young Messi roaming these streets and I've attached two pictures of the view looking out from his doorstep.
