Our next stop was to feed some roadside llamas, also with a stop in the small town of Uquia!

    Quebrada de Humahuaca

    11 июня 2024 г., Аргентина ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Our stop furthest north was one of the main events of the day, Quebrada de Humahuaca aka the mountain of 14 colours. These mountains have formed their distinct colours over hundreds of millions of years. We stopped for a while here to marvel at the magnificent view. Also worth noting this is the highest any of us have ever been on foot at 4,350m!Читать далее

    Salines Grandes Salt Flats

    11 июня 2024 г., Аргентина ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Our final stop and grand finale of the day was the Salines Grande Salt Flats, the 4th largest salt flats in the world! Thanks to the evaporation of water (which has never returned) leaving behind only its salt content, these huge salt flats have formed in this part of the world.

We ventured onto the flats with a local tour guide who gave us some information (in Spanish) and was clearly an expert in taking photos with his props.

After this we drove back for two hours through our stunning surroundings and back to Tilcara. We went for dinner and stocked up on snacks ahead of another day of travel tomorrow!

    Argentina > Bolivia

    12 июня 2024 г., Боливия ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Today was a rather longer travel day as we crossed from Argentina to Bolivia, my 50th country!

We boarded the 9:15am bus from Tilcara to La Quiaca which sits just inside of the Argentinian border. At around lunchtime we crossed over the border on foot, somewhat delayed by the fact that all of Bolivian immigration were on their lunch break. Although we did gain an hour as the clocks went back!

After crossing the border we found a cash machine to withdraw some Bolivianos and then took a taxi to the bus station where we found a bus at 2:30pm to our final destination of Uyuni.

The views on this journey were stunning as we wound through the mountain passes whilst the sunset.

At around 8:15pm we arrived into Uyuni, found our hostel and picked up some egg, bread and water for 3 for the grant cost of about £1.80!

Ready to start a 2 day adventure on the Uyuni salt flats in the morning!

    Train Cemetary

    13 июня 2024 г., Боливия ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Today we set off on the first day of our 2 day salt flats tour! We were picked up at 10am and dropped off our luggage at the travel agency before being whisked away into the desert by our charismatic guide Nelson.

The first stop was this train cemetery made up of defunct trains alongside the old trainline. It was basically a huge outdoor play area for adults!

    Sunset on the Salt Flats

    13 июня 2024 г., Боливия ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

As the sun began to set we headed to part of the salt flats covered by a thin layer of water which made for the most amazing sunset as the sun reflected off the watery surface. We were treated to crisps and wine as darkness began to fall. Once the sun disappeared it was bitterly cold as we were reminded that we were in fact 3,500m high!Читать далее

    Up in the Mountains

    14 июня 2024 г., Боливия ⋅ 🌬 7 °C

Our next couple of stops took us up to 4,100m in the mountains. Our surroundings resembled something from outer space! One the way back down we ended up stranded for about an hour as we got stuck deep in the loose surface trying to give way to a passing vehicle. Eventually with the help of a towe from another vehicle (and putting ours into 4x4 mode) we were rescued!Читать далее

Hot Springs, Sunset and Salt Hotel

    14 июня 2024 г., Боливия ⋅ 🌬 10 °C

Our final proper stop of the day was at an outdoor hot springs. The perfect way to relax and was up from our dusty 4x4 rescue mission!

We then headed back towards Uyuni, stopping off to enjoy the sunset in the hills just outside of town.

As we returned back into Uyuni, Georgia had booked us a nice hotel as a treat which we welcomed with open arms. We headed out for a lovely dinner before jumping into our warm beds to enjoy the penultimate episode of Clarkson's Farm!

    Uyuni > Sucre

    15 июня 2024 г., Боливия ⋅ ☀️ 2 °C

Today was one of the few remaining long travel days, this time from Uyuni to Sucre! Our first bus departed at 10am and arrived into the town of Potosi just before 2pm. We were overjoyed to be arriving the 4,100m high town as we were all bursting to go to the loo as the bus had no such facilities.

We took a taxi to a different bus terminal in Potosi and were able to book onto the 3pm bus heading to Sucre. Our bus departed the terminal on time but didn't leave the town of Potosi itself until almost 4pm as it kept stopping on the side of the road to wait for more passengers. Eventually we rolled into Sucre at around 7pm as it became dark.

The buses were so bumpy that we 'clocked up' over 20,000 steps and climbed almost 300 flights apparently.

After dropping our bags at our hostel (which was nice) we headed out for a lovely Italian (£5.50 a dish as well!) which served the first rose I've seen in months!

    Arriving in La Paz

    17 июня 2024 г., Боливия ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

We arrived in La Paz safe and sound in under an hour. Contrary to popular belief, La Paz is not actually the capital of Bolivia (Sucre is) despite it being the largest city and home to the Bolivian government.

The altitude here is on average around 3,600m so we knew we'd need to take it easy here at first.

Our taxi driver from the airport was a guy who gave us much advice and tips about La Paz, including stopping off at a viewpoint for us to enjoy!

We checked into our hostel in the bustling centre which has a nice view out to the mountains.

Whistle Stop Tour of La Paz

    17 июня 2024 г., Боливия ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

After checking into the hostel, next on the agenda was to find some lunch which we enjoyed at a nice cafe (with an English menu).

From here we did a quick lap of the centre which included the market, governmental area, cathedral, the city centre prison and a few plazas, one of which was swarmed with seagulls!

Our first impression is that La Paz seems like a pretty chaotic place but buzzing place, symbolised by the mess of telephone wires found all over the city.
