  • The Party Bus

    31. marts 2024, Nicaragua ⋅ 🌙 30 °C

Once we'd boarded the bus again it was transformed into a party bus. The music got louder, flashing lights came on and free drinks were distributed all around! First in the form of cans and bottles, then in the form of premixed drinks straight from 2L drinks bottles being shared around. It was great fun!

On the way back we stopped off at a local house for food and marshmallows in their garden before boarding the bus once again.

Once back in Leon the party continued at Bigfoot Hostel. The music was still pumping at 1:20am when we left and almost certainly went on later so I'm glad we weren't staying there!

  • Leon Cathedral

    1. april 2024, Nicaragua ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

After a chilled morning recovering from the night/day before we took the short walk to Leon cathedral, the largest in Central America!

It was also different in the fact that you can take your shoes off and walk around the rooftop! It was actually difficult to keep your eyes open due to the sun reflecting off the white surface but still good to do!Læs mere

  • Arriving in Granada

    1. april 2024, Nicaragua ⋅ 🌙 30 °C

We then collected our bags and took a taxi to the bus terminal. First up we boarded a minivan headed for the University campus in Managua, Nicaragua's capital city.

We changed here for a 'normal' bus which took us on to Granada, our next destination! It's always fun to travel like a local!

We arrived at our hostel which is huge and has loads going on including its own swimming pool, bar, meal services, pool, PlayStation and activities! We think we'll like it here!

  • Exploring Granada

    2. april 2024, Nicaragua ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

This morning we set off to explore our surroundings! Granada is pretty similar to what we've become accustomed to, colourful streets filled with single story buildings, other than the occasional church/cathedral!

This afternoon Danny enjoyed Everton's late equaliser, we played some pool, did some shopping, cooked dinner and took part in the hostel quiz. We didn't win but we weren't too far off, again not bad for a team of 2!

  • Granada Promenade

    2. april 2024, Nicaragua ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Our morning's exploring took us as far as the waterfront, which was nice but definitely filled with some local 'charachters'! Maybe explaining why it wasn't as busy as it probably should have been.

  • Granada > Ometepe

    3. april 2024, Nicaragua ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

What definitely shouldn't have been a full day of travel quite quickly turned into one!

We woke up early ish but were in no rush to get going on the short trip from Granada to Isla de Ometepe 50km away. Therefore we had some breakfast and played some pool at our hostel. We were glad to see the back of probably the worst pool table we've ever played on especially since, despite almost every game going down to the black, Dan beating me 5 sets to 0 in our 48 hour series.

From our hostel we took a 5 minute walk to find the local bus to Rivas, only to find there weren't any buses at the location. After speaking to a few locals at the market they directed us to the new bus stop where we found our bus. The buses in Central America don't run on any timetable and simply leave when they are completely full. We had to wait about 45 minutes for our bus to fill up before we eventually departed.

However, 10 minutes into the journey, our bus broke down. After 20 minutes on the roadside we realised this particular bus wouldn't be going anywhere soon so we had to get off. We then waited another half an hour for the next bus to Rivas to come along which we all piled on. At this point it was about 12:45pm so in the 2.5 hours since leaving our hostel we'd managed to travel 10 minutes down the road.

We arrived in Rivas and jumped straight into a taxi to San Jorge. This was straight forward enough although our driver was a bit erratic.

We got to the ferry terminal in San Jorge at 2:23pm, which was 3 minutes too late to catch the 2:30pm ferry. The next ferry was scheduled for 3:30pm but oh no this ferry had a mechanical failure so the next ferry we could actually board was at 4pm. We used this time wisely and called our friend Javi.

We boarded the packed ferry and eventually arrived at Omotepe, with one of its two volcanos towering ahead. We then had to take a tuktuk down the road to our hostel.

So, 2 buses, a taxi, a ferry, a tuktuk and 7 hours later we arrived at our hostel! It's a pretty decent hostel with great food and a good selection of drinks. So we had a few soft drinks and played some cards before settling down.

Not exactly a fun day but definitely another memorable one, which sometimes is what it's all about!

    God speed Merseytravel.

  • Charco Verde Nature Reserve

    4. april 2024, Nicaragua ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

The only real way to get around Ometepe is via scooter, motorbike or quad bike (ATV). Since we'd be having to fit two of us on one vehicle, and the only two wheeled vehicle I've ever road is a bicycle, we opted to hire an ATV.

We'd also got chatting to a guy named Will, who had the same plans as us and by sheer coincidence has shared our last 3 hostels and did our volcano boarding trip with us. He's also a paid traveller and is currently designing a Central American route for his company!

Our first stop of the day was Charco Verde Nature Reserve. It had a nice lagoon but most impressively was its black sand beach looking out to Volcan Maderas!

  • Sunset at Punta Jesus Maria

    4. april 2024, Nicaragua ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

  • Playa Santo Domingo (Again)

    5. april 2024, Nicaragua ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

This morning we hopped back onto our ATV and headed to Playa Santa Domingo once more! It was such a nice location and we wanted to experience it without the pre-sunset sandflies. We spent a few hours here and it was even better without the sandflies!

We booked some flights, buses, ferries and hostels and read some of our Kindles.

  • The Airstrip

    5. april 2024, Nicaragua ⋅ 🌙 32 °C

On our way back to our hostel we stopped off at the airstrip. We've crossed here many times already as the main road crosses the airstrip but we thought we must stop as it makes for a great photo. Not often you get to sit on a quad bike on the runway tarmac with a volcano in the background!

Thank you Ometepe you were stunning!!!

  • Leaving Nicaragua

    6. april 2024, Nicaragua ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

This morning our alarms went off early to catch the 6:45am ferry leaving Ometepe for mainland Nicaragua.

We had to get up early as despite our trip being only 4.5 hours (direct, on paper) to La Fortuna in Costa Rica, we might have to take up to 5 buses (plus a ferry, taxis and tuktuk) with no set timetable. So we thought best to start early to ensure we make it!

First up was a tuktuk from our hostel to the ferry terminal, then the ferry to the mainland, a taxi to the bus terminal and a chicken bus to the border.

Whilst we were on the bus it started lashing down, the first proper rain we've seen. We thought this made for a nice change until we remember that our bags were chained to the roof of the bus, without their waterproof covers. So when we arrived at the border, they were a little wet. Hey ho, a mistake we won't make again.

This would also be the first border we would cross on foot without the help of a shuttle or coach!

  • Entering Costa Rica

    6. april 2024, Costa Rica ⋅ 🌬 29 °C

The border crossing from Nicaragua into Costa Rica went very smoothly!

There were local bus vendors selling tickets to various places, so we asked around about how best to get to La Fortuna. There was one vendor selling tickets direct to a town called El Tanque, which is only a 10 minute taxi away from La Fortuna! The only issue was that this bus didn't leave until 2:30pm, which was over 4 hours away. However, we thought best to play it safe and wait around for this bus rather than catch 4 further unscheduled buses that might not exist.

We also realised at this point that we'd (I'd) left our untouched food bag containing our breakfast and lunch at Nicaraguan passport control. So I set off on a mission to retrieve the bag.

The border police for both countries were happy for me to go back and have a look but without success, the bag couldn't be found. So we bought a pack of ginger biscuits, a lemonade and a Powerade from a nearby vendor.

After a long wait our bus finally came! We stopped off and picked up some snacks. The legroom was terrible so about halfway through me and Dan split up to give each other more space. I ended up sitting across from an 18 year old local guy who loved football. So we tried to have a conversation half in terrible Spanish and half in terrible English which went okay actually!

We then arrived at El Tanque and caught an Uber to La Fortuna. Upon arrival at our hostel we found 🚨 THIS IS NOT A DRILL 🚨 a ball court with a FOOTBALL!!!!! The hostel also has a fully equipped kitchen, lots of social spaces and our room is nice and air conditioned too, so this was nice to be greeted with after a long day.

We nipped to the supermarket and made, you guessed it, tuna pasta for dinner. Our first impressions of La Fortuna are good! Now time for some much needed sleep.

  • Morning in La Fortuna

    7. april 2024, Costa Rica ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

This morning was a complete washout! The rain hammered down from the moment we woke up until lunchtime. Our plan anyway was to watch Man Utd v Liverpool which we did, and then played some darts whilst Tottenham were on.

At around midday there was a break in the rain so we took the chance to run to the supermarket for some supplies and see some of the town centre in daylight!

  • El Salto

    7. april 2024, Costa Rica ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

This afternoon the rain held off so we ventured out to El Salto, a part of the river where you can bathe, and it also has a rope swing!

There were a few people there when we arrived but it just got busier and busier. The atmosphere was good as everyone was chatting and encouraging each other on the rope swing.

After a few hours we headed back to our hostel for dinner and ended the night playing 20 questions. We took it in turns to think of a person and guess who the other was thinking of. Dan had me guessing Genghis Khan, Mr Blobby, Rosa Parks and Bobby Madley, whilst he had to guess Ned Flanders, Mr Lamb (from St Mary's), Steve Irwin and Rose West. It was quite a challenge!

  • Natural Hot Springs

This morning the rain held off whilst we had breakfast so we headed out in an Uber to a popular natural hotsrpings. As we drew nearer the clouds became greyer and by the time we got there it was lashing down.

But hey ho, we were going to get wet anyway so we covered out belongings with a waterproof coat and got into the river. It was really warm and pretty surreal being in the middle of a tropical downpour but not caring! We stayed for about 3 hours which included a second major downpour before heading home. The river was starting to get very busy at this point!

I also forgot to take any good photos 🤦‍♂️

It was then another tuna pasta dinner and its taken me a trip to Costa Rica to try my first ever Smirnoff Ice!

Our tour started shortly after sunset at around 6pm. We headed off into the jungle with our expert guide. He truly was an expert as without him we wouldn't have seen a thing and it was amazing how he could spot the smallest of creatures out of nowhere!

Some of the highlights included a baby python, tarantula, possum, some colourful birds, more spiders and funky insects.

After almost 2 hours it was time to leave the jungle and head home.

We had a late omelette dinner, ate our Milka bars and watched 3 episodes of Phoenix Nights on our room TV!

  • Monte Verde Cloud Forest

    10. april 2024, Costa Rica ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

This morning we caught the 9:30am bus to Monte Verde cloud forest, the regions main attraction. Once we arrived we had to join a waiting list to enter. At 10:30am they read names from the waiting list to invite you up to buy a ticket. An unusual system but we got in!

We quickly realised why the forest is called a cloud forest, the pictures speak for themselves. In fact today it was so cloudy that you couldn't see a thing from any of the viewpoints.

We also struggled to spot anywildlife other than a caterpillar and a couple of birds but we did hear very loud cries between some sort of large animal, but we've no idea what! Clearly we missed our expert guide but we definitely got the proper cloud forest experience!
