    Yesterday, we tried retracing Camille Pissaro’s footsteps to find the exact spot where he painted ‘Le Pont Boïeldieu à Rouen. We didn’t quite get there, but I think we came close!
    The day was filled with exploring, lots of walking! We wandered through the old market, we sat and had lunch by stunningly beautiful Rouen cathedral. We found a huge art supply store - I treated myself to a travel watercolour set 😊
    One of the highlights was discovering the breathtaking 16th-century Astronomical Clock, the Gros-Horloge, beautifully framed by an ornate stone archway. Rouen has been an absolute feast for the eyes so far – every corner seems to reveal another piece of history and beauty!

    After a leisurely lunch wandering around the Abbey. Absolutely vast building, maybe not as decorative as the cathedral but equally as impressive. Can't help thinking how much money and power the church had when peasants were living a subsistence life.Read more

  • Monet's Garden

    Really words can't describe how amazing the gardens were, the variety of, to me, unusual and colourful plants was amazing.
    Made me think of Mummy, I don't remember if she ever came here but she would have loved it.
    Lucky with the weather today the sun shone bringing the flowers out.
    Will edit and add photos, but for now it's just a dump.

  • La Musardière dinner.

    Dinner was a delight on so many levels. We both went for the Normandy Beef, with blanched spring onion, crispy potatoes in an exquisite jus, pudding was for me a honey mouse with biscuit, plus honey mead. ..Mark went for the cheese.
    This faded French charmed hotel is in the Michelin guide, we landed on our feet here without trying… We are sadly coming back tomorrow to try the taster menu 🤭 🫣

  • Last day in Giverny-Back to the garden.

    After a leisurely stroll around beautiful Giverny we then took another afternoon in Monet’s house and gardens, I snapped more photos and even attempted some sketching, though the crowds-filled with tourists arriving by the coach load-made this impossible. I must admit, I’m shy about sketching in public anyway.
    On the bright side, I now have a huge collection of photos from my proper camera and iPhone. We capped our last afternoon in Giverny with a relaxing drink in the sun, savouring the perfect end to a lovely day.

  • Naughty but nice

    First up a pretty and tasty amuse-bouche, beef confit wrapped in an incredibly thin pastry, delicious.

    First starter; Soft egg soaked in soy, aubergine purée, pickled aubergine with herb gels, delicious!

    Second starter; Textures of pumpkin with pickled mushrooms and black garlic mayonnaise. The purée pumpkin was incredible.

    First main course- it’s all about the corn! Empanadas filled with seeds and crispy corn around creamed corn with bbq sauce and a whiskey cream sauce. Delicious!

    Second main course - Oyster and scallops with emulsion of oyster and lemon. Cauliflower cream. Orange and lemon gels. Amazing flavours. Running out of superlatives 😊

    First dessert course; local cows milk cheese mousse with pickled apple, delicious and unlike anything we have had before. 😋

    Second dessert course; Pear cake, with slices of pear, gels, cream, shards of meringue and fermented milk ice cream, a fitting end to an amazing meal.

  • Treading the paths

    From Giverny, we drove to Auvers-Sur-Oise- a pilgrimage, you might say, to this hauntingly beautiful place where Vincent Van Gogh rests. It was here that, approximately on July 27th, 1890, Van Gogh tragically shot himself in the chest, passing away from his wounds two days later, July 29th.
    We walked the very paths Vincent frequented, including the site of his final painting, Roots, created on the day of his death. This chaotic tangle of growth may have captured his own troubled mind - a vision of vitality struggling to find direction? Walking these paths, it struck me that his work often feels like a message that he was trying to leave behind, especially in Wheatfield with Crows, where paths fork in three directions. I couldn’t help but wonder: was he thinking of which path he would take?
    The afternoon was deeply moving. Reading a letter from his dear friend Camille Bernard, who wrote to a fellow artist soon after Vincents death, brought me to tears. In that moment, Vincent Van Gogh’s story felt so real, no longer confined to a book or the internet.
    The cemetery lies on a hill above the town, surrounded by farmland where tractors work the earth alongside its boundaries. Local families tend to their graves here. For a short time, we couldn’t spot Vincent and Theo Van Gogh’s graves, but then Mark spotted them - their simple headstones and the rest of the plot covered in Ivy. Dr Gachet, Vincent’s doctor and friend, had planted Ivy from his own garden, intending it to grow and cover the plot so that the brothers would forever be bound together. I felt deeply grateful to pay homage to such an inspiring artist. It is a day I will never forget.

  • More planning required!

    Well the end of the trip is in Le Cateau en Cembresis largely because I wanted to visit the Matisse Museum that has one of the largest collections of Mattisse and a good number of Herbin pictures. I last came in the 80's and have long wanted to return. Unfortunately the museum has been closed for 18 months and is due to reopen in three weeks!

    Oh well on the plus side we'll have to come back, and we went into the tourist office and met a wonderful old gentleman who took us to his house and showed us his own collections of art. He gave us some mattise posters and other bits as he used to be the chairman of the friends of the museum.

    Once we escaped we went to look at some sites related to Wilfred Owen and the ww1 battles in the area.

  • Relaxing last day

    So we'd planned a bit of shopping in Cambrai for the last day. When we got up we realised something was amiss, the hotel was in eerie silence and the building site nearby was empty.

    Set off to Cambrai and are lucky to find a park in the square outside the main church where armed police and soldiers are on guard as lots of people make their way into church.

    A quick Google reveals its all saints day, a public holiday. Most of the shops are shut, happily the wine merchant is open for a few purchases!

    Moulin a vent and St Emillion, Chardonnay in a 5l box!

    Lunch in a nice brasserie before a wander and head back to le Cateau, taking in another war cemetery.

    Come nightfall all the restaurants were closed so a quick bite at the taco takeaway followed by a bottle of wine from carrefour in our room.
