• Istanbul to Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria

    12 ottobre 2025, Bulgaria ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We left Istanbul on the early evening train bound for Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. Tonight is the last time the train will travel this route as it is being axed due to low passenger numbers.
This is our first overnight train requiring a border transfer. Arriving at the Turkish border at 2.30 am we must disembark for our official passport check. The Bulgarian immigration service more civilised, checking our passports as we recline in our sleeping berths.
Sadly, the dim platform conditions on the Turkish side of No Man’s Land saw one of our group trip and fall. Even sadder, Heather appears to have suffered bone damage. The Turkish officials suggested an ambulance, but Heather decided to keep rolling until we reach Romania’s medical service.
Morning light delivered beautiful scenery: farms, craggy limestone hills, deciduous forests vibrant in autumn colours, and gorges with clear watercourses leaping over their rocky beds. Our own berths provided smoother travelling – though Heather felt every bump.
