  • Nepagunj to Jhuphal hike to Dunai

    17. maj 2025, Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

Flight from Nepalgunj to Jhuphal, and the trekking starts with a hike to Dunai. Summit Air ride was a Czech built L 410 / UVP-E20 turbo prop, seats 19. Without a doubt the smallest commercial aircraft I've ever ridden in. Airport was like an old bus terminal, love it!!! We met our assistant sherpa Vishnu at the airport after landing. And a short hike later we met his family. Getting down the trail, 10 km later we were at Dubai, three tents already set up and a fantastic dinner but before that Ayut, (Bryan's nephew) showed us great place to get Momo, ie...dumplings, they were really good.Læs mere

  • Hike from Dunai to Tarakot

    18. maj 2025, Nepal ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Hike from our first camp in Dunai to Tarakot along the Thull Bheri river. We left the camp at 7:15 and arrived Tarakot about 3:00pm, It was a long day. Bryan would fall victim to a land slide caused by an excavator above us. He broke his fibula near his ankle and would limp about the last 4 of the 6 miles to Tarakot. Fortunately for all of us there was medical help and a helipad there. The next day Bryan would be medevacked back to Kathmandu. On a much lesser note my intestinal distress would start this night and last until the morning we hiked Numala Pass 6 days later. I would eventually figure out it was not the water, which we boiled and treated with iodine, but the fresh vegetables and fruit rinsed in local water that was causing it. This was a rough day : (Læs mere

  • Tarakot to Laina Odar

    19. maj 2025, Nepal ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Lots of climbing up to Laina Odar and I was not feeling great after the salad I ate two days ago. very few pics this day.....just not feeling well. By the time we finished this arduous hike, Bryan would be in Kathmandu. about 3K ft of climbing and it was difficult. There was a tea house to take shelter in after the hike to higher elevation and wetter weather,. the hospitality was welcomed. Many goats and donkeys to share camp with in Laina OdarLæs mere

  • Laina Oder to Nowarpani

    20. maj 2025, Nepal ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

And the rain continues from the night before. And we thought this was the tail end of the dry season here in Nepal. We started the morning with rain gear on and covers for our back packs made of plastic bags. The beginning of the hike would start out steep for the first 2-3 miles but eventually would level out a bit, THANK YOU as I was still struggling with the trots. By lunchtime the rain had stopped and it was sunny. We climbed about 1000 ft today as opposed to 3000 ft yesterday. My boots are delaminating as they are 15 years old, but wish I discovered this pre departure from the US. I have faith they will hang in there. It started raining again when we got to camp and we met a very nice family who's daughters spoke very good English, they attended boarding school in Danai which is quite a hike back to where we came from. By night fall it had cooled off to about 40F.Læs mere

  • Nawarpani to Doho Tarap

    21. maj 2025, Nepal ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Started hiking again in the rain but it would subside half way thru the hike. Nice tea houses half way and again at the end of the hike. Village of Doho Tarap, mostly Tibetan people, anything mechanical was from China. We are about a 4 hour motorcycle ride from the Chinese border. Chanting at 6am the next morning from the Monastery on the hill. I dried my clothes on trees that grow at 12,900 ft!!
We have a day off tomorrow with a short altitude acclimation hike and a visit to the Monestary up on the hill. Bon is the major religion in this region, It is Tibetan and predates Buddhism Most of the people in this region are of a Tibetan background. China took over Tibet in 1950-1951

  • Doho Tarap altitude acclimation day

    22. maj 2025, Nepal ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

No rain today!!! After breakfast we hiked to the Kakar Gumba monastery and were welcomed inside by the Tibetan Monk and his assistant. The building is over 200 years old. Very spiritual. afterwards we headed straight up to the top of Thomun peak, about a 1000 ft climb. On top we would meet a very friendly chief of police for the municipality along with one of his deputies. Tuna and rice for lunch! Who packs tuna on a backpacking trip?Læs mere

  • Doho Tarap to Numala Base Camp

    23. maj 2025, Nepal ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

We leave Doho Tarap and hike thru the populated valley North West amongst school children and mushroom hunters to our base camp above 14000 ft. Many Yaks and horses as we climbed to our new home. Snow at dinner and again in the night, well below 32F through the night. Super happy about that down sleeping bag purchase. : )Læs mere

  • Up over Numala Pass and down to Danigar

    24. maj 2025, Nepal ⋅ ☁️ 3 °C

Our first 17000+ ft pass and more sleep at 14000+ ft. Woke up to 1/4-1/2 inch of snow at the camp. At the summit great view of the Himalayas to the NE and surprise, some Snow Leopard prints. A rocky hike down from the summit to our next base camp at 14K+ft and of course rain again with a snowy mix. We would seek shelter at the local tea house / family residence, where we were welcomed with "Rexi" or Bah which is local alcohol from a still. It reminds me of watered down Vodka. We sipped Rexi and shared a corner with a two day old lamb, while the family made Dhedo for dinner. Dhedo is a dough made from Wheat Flour and boiling water. Once of a doughy consistency it is severed with a chutney made from red peppers. The wild flowers at this altitude are beautiful. We were also made aware of the mushrooms at this altitude and how they grow. They are like no other mushrooms in that there growth requires and insect larvaeLæs mere

  • Danigar up and over Bogala la pass

    25. maj 2025, Nepal ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

after Bogala La Pass we head down to Yak Kharaka. Warmer weather at the base camp at Danigar, no snow and a good nights sleep. The climb to Bogala La pass required only two long sleeved t-shirts. About 2.5 miles to the top. Much snow the last 500ft of the climb (.5 in). It was a rocky descent as we got into the lower altitudes there were many mushroom hunter and one family stopped on the trail to talk with us (in Napali) and show us what they found. We arrived at our camp in a meadow called Yak Kharaka and we all started a clothes line in the bright sun, to dry what was damp. I took a bath in the local mountain stream in view of a most majestic waterfall. our campsite had many larger rocks to lounge on. I took a nap on one before being awakened for 4 o'clock tea. Many marmot burrows amongst the rocks. Yak patty fire after dinner and I showed the Sherpa's what a satellite looks like amongst the stars.Læs mere

  • Yak Kharaka to Lake Phoksundo

    26. maj 2025, Nepal ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

We go from 12,600 ft down to 11,000 ft and beautiful Phoksundo, Rain in Yak Kharaka overnight, resulted in a very foggy morning before we hiked out. Lots of wild flowers as we descend. We had quite a climb out of the river valley to get up over the ridge around the lake. trees and area around the lake were very wooded much like Lake Tahoe. Nothing lives in the lake probably due to altitude and no one is allowed to touch the water. It's beautiful
Yak meat for dinner (it's like jerky) and to drink Tombha, a fermented millet drink that has hints of Kombucha.
