• Lago Agrio

We arrived in Lago Agrio after our long, windy, uncomfortable overnight bus from Quito. It was the most uncomfortable I'd been on a night bus - no foot rests, I felt the need to hug my bag all night and the driver would put the brakes on suddenly so often and my tights were super slippery. We had about 3 hours to kill outside of Hotel D'Mario where we were picked up for our tour.

  • Cuyabeno - Nicky's Lodge

We arrived at Nicky's Lodge after a two hour car trip from Lago Agrio and then a 4 hour boat trip down the river with all of our belongings. We saw mofo butterflies, Humboldt monkeys, squirrel monkeys and many birds. We arrived and got settled and had a tiny nap before dinner. We went to bed almost immediately after dinner as we were exhausted from the bus trip and then the car and boat ride in the sun.

  • Cuyabeno - Nicky's Lodge

We woke up for a 6.30 boat trip to find animals. We managed to see a sloth (from a distance), many birds and FRESH WATER DOLPHINS - WOW.
we returned for breakfast at 8.30 before setting out again to search for animals (more sloths, this time from closer) and to visit a local community. We searched for yuca roots and then all helped prepare them - first they were peeled, then washed then grated then strained then seived before being made into thin bread that almost looked like pita. We are the bread with fish cooked in banana leaves, rice, beans, guacamole and some other things. We then had a dessert of banana with the starch from the yuca made into a patty and it was incredible with this cocoa sauce. There was also a huge millipede crawling on the ground that we held - so cute and strange!
We saw more dolphins and birds on the way back before arriving at the campsite for a rest before setting out again on a trip to swim and watch the sunset over the lagoon. We saw a Madre luna owl camouflaged in a tree - it looked so similar to a tawny frogmouth. Kait and I elected not to swim due to the caimans and being too cold afterwards. On the return we saw a massive caiman hiding in the mangroves - so eerie!!! We also saw a baby caiman and an Amazon tree boa.

  • Medellin

We arrived very early to our hostel, Selina, in Medellin. It was too early to check in so we went for breakfast at Betty's Bowls and it was DELICIOUS. We had met a guy from Fitzroy on the bus, Ziad, and he came to breakfast with us and then took us to a very local market that was a little frightening, and to the local fruit and veg market too where we had a 6000 pesos ($3) meal of rice, beans, chips and salad.

  • Cartagena

I arrived in Cartagena at about 3pm at my hostel. I lounged around until dinner time when I wandered a few streets and found ColombItalia Arepas and it was another of those awesome moments. I sat there on the gutter of the street as I ate these phenomenal tasting Arepas, cars squeezing through the crowds and locals milling about. Everyone was sweaty buy happy.

  • Cartagena - Plankton

I did a full day trip our to Playa Blanca and a plankton tour at night. Playa Blanca was very disappointing aside from the beautiful beach. It was the busiest beach I've ever been to and there were so many people selling things (as is standard).
The plankton aspect was out of this world though. Mind blowing. Another of those crazy, appreciation moments but on another level. That first moment, jumping in and making quick movements and feeling like I was glowing. Everyone being just as excited and awed. Then realising if I slowly moved my arm out of the water, the plankton would fall like shooting stars from my arm. I couldn't stop staring, it didn't feel real at all. HOW LUCKY I AM. Lucky to be able to see that, lucky to even exist in the same world as such incredible things. And such hinges that I had no idea of until the day prior. What else am I missing, without even knowing I am missing it? There is SO much still to see and be awed by.

  • Panama Airport

I'm sitting on the tile floor at the airport waiting for check-in for my flight to open, it's 10.18pm and it's pretty empty here.
I'm listening to 11:11 by Arkells, the band Gianluca was playing on Costeño Beach. I just looked down the empty airport and realised I feel so at peace here. Not here, but in general, in this moment. I keep having these moments more and more frequently, the longer I travel and the more I'm alone. It's so nice to feel so full and content and happy, I really feel like I know what life is about. I'm so fucking happy. I'm so excited for the things to come back home and I'm so excited to not work full time and to throw myself into opportunities that push my comfort zone and challenge me in the most exciting ways (like applying for National Geographic Trip Leader positions).
I'm SO excited to be seeing Ryan in Phoenix in 24 hours and to start our road trip, it's going to be an awesome experience to share with each other 😊
    Just happy. So happy.
