  • Chicago Fire

    May 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

Chicago Fire has become one of my favorite television series so it was a real treat to see one of Chicago’s actual fire stations. This is their Chinatown station.

  • Truck Company 4

    May 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

The fire truck just pulled out so they must be ready to go on a call. That’s lucky for me but very bad luck for whoever needs their services. I hope that it’s nothing too serious.

  • Off They Go!

    May 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

I would have been happy just to see a real Chicago firehouse but to see them going out on an actual call was an unexpected bonus! I had been thinking about dropping in at the firehouse, just to visit, but I’m sure nobody is there right now. Duty comes first!Read more

  • Ready to Eat

    May 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

Kathy is starting to get a bit grumpy which tells me that she’s really hungry. With all the traveling, and exploring, we’ve done today, that’s completely understandable. I hope our food is ready soon!

  • Pizza!

    May 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

This is my first look at Chicago style pizza and I’m not disappointed. This is a pepperoni pizza and I was very surprised to see that the toppings are sitting underneath the cheese. It’s different but tasty!Read more

  • Very Tasty!

    May 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

Kathy decided to get herself a pasta dish rather then having pizza. She tasted the pizza though and decided that, while it was very good, New York’s pizza is a little bit better. I didn’t taste much difference. I guess it all depends on what we’re used to.Read more

  • Benny Says…

    May 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

We found out that, contrary to popular belief, the people of Chicago actually don’t care for the deep dish pizza their city has become so famous for. The people who eat it are immediately seen as tourists looking to experience the “Real Chicago”.Read more

  • The Way Back

    May 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌩️ 46 °F

Using Google Maps, it’s very easy to find the easiest, and fastest, way back to the hotel. I don’t know how we ever managed to travel in different cities without that app. It makes traveling so much easier!Read more

  • Chase

    May 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

We’ve got plenty of Chase bank locations back home but I’ve never seen any of them like this one. The blue lights really catch the eye and it’s pulsating glow is amazing! This looks like a giant DNA strand.Read more

  • We’re Back!

    May 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

We made it back to our hotel much faster than we had expected to. When going out, if felt like we had walked so far but coming back only took a matter of minutes. Thank you, Google Maps!

  • Room With a View

    May 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

Our view looked great during the day but it looks even better at night. I only wish that we were higher up so we could see the whole skyline of Chicago. Hopefully on our next visit.

  • Light Trails

    May 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

I was able to get a long enough exposure of the street outside our hotel to get some good light trails. I wasn’t sure if something like this was possible using an iPhone but I’m trying to squeeze every trick I can out of this phone. It’s so much more convenient traveling with just a phone rather than a heavy backpack filled with camera gear.Read more

  • Building of Mystery

    May 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

This building directly across from our room certainly looks intriguing but I’m not sure what sort of building it is. The bottom floors is, obviously, a parking garage but what’s on the upper levels? Office space? Apartments? I should try looking into this.Read more

  • Marina City

    May 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 41 °F

Still curious about these buildings, I did a bit of research and found out that the two towers are called Marina City. It’s a mixed use residential-commercial building complex that was opened between 1963 and 1967. The towers' symbolic similarity to rural Illinois corncobs has often been noticed.Read more

  • The Corner Bakery

    May 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 43 °F

We took a short walk over to the Corner Bakery to have breakfast. We’ve never heard of this place before but, apparently, there’s a chain of them here in Chicago. They seem to be a little more than Dunkn Donuts but less than a diner. As long as they taste good we’ll be fine with it.Read more

  • Enjoying Breakfast

    May 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 43 °F

Kathy’s pick for breakfast was a yogurt parfait with fresh fruit mixed in. She enjoyed it but I’m hoping that’s going to be enough food for her. Well, if she gets hungry later we can stop and have a snack.Read more

  • Breakfast Sandwich

    May 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 43 °F

My choice for breakfast was the bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on sourdough bread. On paper this sounds delicious but it tasted a bit off. I can’t tell if it’s the taste of the sourdough bread or the cheese used was a very sharp cheddar but, whatever it was, the tastes just didn’t mesh well together. I ended up just eating the bacon and eggs on their own and leaving the bread and cheese. I really wanted to like this sandwich, too. Hopefully lunch will be better.Read more

  • On Our Way

    May 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

Now that we’ve had breakfast, and are feeling comfortably full, we’re on our way to the Free Tours by Foot tour of the Loop and Millennium Park. It starts at 10:00am so we should just about make it.

  • Where’s My Jacket?

    May 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

We’re almost to the place we’re supposed to meet the tour group when Kathy suddenly decided that she wanted to go back to the hotel and get her jacket because she’s feeling a bit chilly. I hope she makes it back in time!Read more

  • Still Waiting

    May 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

I’m still here waiting at the train station waiting for Kathy to come back from the hotel. It’s only been a few minutes so far but it always feels like much longer when you’re waiting for someone. I’m sure that she’ll be here soon.Read more

  • Almost Ready to Start

    May 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

I can see that most of the tour group is here already and it’s nearly time to get started. We’re starting the tour under that big Chicago theater marquee that I was so taken with yesterday. I’m glad to have an opportunity to see it so close.Read more

  • The Red Line

    May 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

Kathy made it back just in time for the tour to start. I was surprised by how quickly she made it to the hotel and then back again. Here’s the red line train station, right beside the Chicago Theater. We were looking for it last night when we went to Chinatown but couldn’t find it. We had thought all of Chicago’s trains are elevated but the red line, apparently, goes underground.Read more
