There were so many interesting shops here that I would have liked to visit but, unfortunately, all of them were closed. M & S Food Store

Passage Jouffroy is a small shopping mall in the style of the early eighteenth century. Back then, this place brought people off the street for drinks, food and shopping and it still delights today.

High End Shopping

The architecture here is more of a draw than the shops themselves, but we enjoyed window shopping. Although we didn't go inside, since everything was closed, all of these stores look very expensive.

Hard Rock Cafe

The Hard Rock Cafe was right down the street from our hotel. With Passage Jouffroy and Hard Rock Cafe so close, plus a metro station right outside the door of the hotel, I'm thinking that we picked a great hotel. The location seems perfect so far!Read more

We didn't have to walk very far before we came to another metro station, this one called Richelieu Drouot. It seems like getting around in Paris is going to be very easy and convienent. These stations seem very similar to what we have in New York City. I know that there is another style of stations that are more old fashioned looking and fancy. I hope that we see some of those while we're here.Read more

Here's another look at the metro station but from the other side. From this perspective, I can see that the entrance is a lot wider than the what we are used to in New York. I guess that it's easier for more people to go up and down the stairs at the same time but walking down the middle area could be a bit dangerous, especially if it's raining or snowing. I always like to hold the rail while I'm going down steps.Read more

We're still seeing every single place that offers dining having the sidewalk seating. Some of it is right out on the sidewalk and some of it is in these enclosed, or semi-enclosed, glass rooms. The glass rooms must be a lot warmer but it doesn't have the same sort of charm as the open-air sidewalk dining.Read more

We're having a lot of fun exploring the neighborhood around our hotel. It would be nice to go and see some of the major attractions of Paris but we're just too tired today. The same thing happened to us when we went to London. After traveling, and dealing with time differences, we're just knocked out!Read more

Just like in New York City, Paris has street stalls preparing, and selling, food for people on the go. There are a lot less of this sort of thing in Paris though. In fact, this was the only stall that we saw. Aside from the hot dog sellers, most of the food stalls in New York sell halal food, which I wouldn't touch. Here in Paris, this stall is selling Vietnamese food along with sandwiches, crepes and ice cream. That's quite an eclectic mix.Read more

Here's another restaurant that features outdoor dining but, like most of the places that we've seen, there's no one eating there. It can't be that it's too cold. This place has the inner restaurant, the glassed in outside part and the open air outside part. Maybe, like London, they eat dinner a lot later in Paris? I guess, after we've been here for a while, we'll learn the time schedule here.Read more

Another Passage

This is another passage way that was right across the street from Passage Jouffroy. While it's similar in it's idea, it doesn't really have that stylish old-world charm that Passage Jouffroy has. This alleyway seemed to be mostly bars and restaurants with very few shops. I think that Passage Jouffroy seems a lot more impressive.Read more

Victoria Station

This restaurant doesn't look French at all. It has a British name, Victoria Station, but the way it looks, with all the neon and dark colors, it makes me think of an American steakhouse. The outside dining here is non-existent. It's true that the restaurant is extending out into the street but it's so dark and closed that I wouldn't consider this outside dining at all.
I looked this restaurant up on the internet and they serve pizza as well as some other Italian dishes. The look of this restaurant doesn't make me think of Italian food at all.Read more

This is a place that we got to know quite well. We didn't eat here but it was right outside the door of our hotel. So, this restaurant became our landmark. When we saw this place, we knew that we were home.
We had a great, but exhausting, first day in Paris and it was a lot of fun exploring the neighborhood. It feels very different from London but I guess that's to be expected. I hope that we both sleep well tonight so that we can really enjoy our first full day in France tomorrow.Read more

This is the McDonald's right down the street from our hotel. We decided to eat here just to have something quick so we could get started on site seeing.
I'm not sure I like the McDonald's here in France. It looks very cold, impersonal and sterile. Kathy looks more like she's in the Apple store, or some other computer place, than McDonald's. I don't know if all the McDonald's here are like this or if it's just this one. I hope that others are different.Read more

After we ordered our food, we picked it up at this window. I'm not sure how breakfast here is going to taste because the menu here is quite different from what the breakfast selections are like in America and London. Paris doesn't seem to be one of those countries that have certain foods designated as breakfast foods. While we looked over their menu, we noticed that we were free to order, basically, everything that McDonald's sells. The items that we would consider as acceptable for breakfast were very limited. Hopefully we will be happy with our choices but it just seems strange.Read more

Earl Grey, Hot!

Our food was acceptable but not the greatest. Actually, we were both disappointed with our first breakfast in France. We agreed that we wouldn't come here for breakfast again.
I got their beef and bacon McMuffin which turned out to be a hamburger on an english muffin instead of a regular bun. The bacon on it was nearly raw. I couldn't even eat it. To drink, I had orange juice. No pulp, of course. I prefer the pulp but it's so hard to find places that serve that for some reason.
Kathy got the egg McMuffin, which was exactly the same thing as what you can get back home. She also got the mcgriddle which was nothing like what we have back home. It wasn't a sandwich, like we're used to. It was just the Mcgriddle bun and it didn't have the maple syrup infused in the bun so it tasted very dry and plain tasting. To drink, Kathy had Earl Grey tea because Alicia had been recommending it so highly. Kathy liked the Earl Grey very much. We're going to have to go shopping for that once we get back home. Oddly, this McDonald's didn't have milk or cream for her tea. I wonder if they were just out of it or if the people in France just don't use it.Read more

Kathy still looks a bit tired as we rode the metro to the Saint Michel - Notre Dame stop. At least she got a seat. I had to stand the whole ride. It wasn't too bad though. Everything seems to be quite close to our hotel, which make site seeing so much easier. It's always better to stay in the heart of the city rather than on the outskirts. You might save a few dollars staying outside the city but you spend so much time traveling back and forth. Don't waste time going back and forth like that. Your time is much more valuable so make every moment count!Read more

As we came out of the metro at Saint Michel I saw that this station had the more fancy type of station entrance. I thought that I was going to have to search for one of these but it was so easy to find. This style looks even more impressive than I expected it to be. I wonder why all of the metro stations aren't like this. It would look a lot nicer.Read more

Gibert Jeune looks to be a major book seller in the Saint Michel district. I love bookstores so this would have been such an interesting place to me but, unfortunately, since I can't read French, I can't really do any shopping or even browsing here. Not only did Gibert Jeune sell books but it looked like they had a big selection of postcards also. I always love collecting postcards from places that we travel to and now it seems that Veronica and Susan have started collecting them too. I felt like getting some here but I didn't want to carry them around with me all day. I'll look around. Maybe I'll find better ones that are less expensive. .30 Euro per card sounds like a lot. Still, I'll remember this place, in case I need to come back.Read more

Exploring Saint Michel

The Saint Michel district is full of these narrow alleyways. It gives the area a very old world European feel. This seems to be an area that's designed, primarily, for tourists. The main things that were seeing around here are souvenir shops, bars and inexpensive places to eat. I guess I can understand that though. We're very close to Notre Dame Cathedral, which is said to be most popular tourist attraction in France. I guess that everyone in this area wants to capitalize on so many visitors coming to this neighborhood.Read more

In Les Miserables, Gavroche sings about the slums of Saint Michel. This probably refers to this area near the Chapel Saint-Michel in the Latin Quarter of Paris, a section in the 5th arrondissement that's traditionally been a big hang-out area for students and artistic types. Read more
