  • Sitting in Judgement

    7 novembre 2017, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

The statuary here is beautiful and there is so much of it. Something that disturbs me a bit, that I see in all Catholic churches, is that most of the statuary looks very cruel and condemning. It's as if you have been judged and found to be wanting. As you walk through the cathedral, looking at the different statues, it can make you feel very small and unworthy. I'm sure that was the intention of the designers of the cathedral but I don't understand why they would want to instill such feelings in their followers.Leggi altro

  • Hooked on a Feeling

    7 novembre 2017, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

I've always loved visiting churches and cathedrals but the one one I've really felt a holy presence is in St Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. That's changed today. I can feel a very strong holy presence here in Notre Dame. If anything, it's even stronger than what I feel in St. Patrick's. I think that all churches should have that feeling but, sadly, very few of them do. I'm so happy to be getting that feeling here! It makes our visit here extra special!Leggi altro

  • Should We Ride?

    7 novembre 2017, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

As much as I like these fancy looking train stations, I can understand why they are not all over Paris. These stations take up a lot of room! It's good for a park or a courtyard, as I'm seeing here, but for a regular street, like where our hotel is, there just isn't enough space on the sidewalk for something as elaborate as this.Leggi altro

  • The Kiosk

    7 novembre 2017, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

Our walking took us to Rue de Rivoli, one of the most famous streets for shopping in Paris. It didn't really impress us though. We are not big shoppers, especially in trendy boutiques that look quite expensive.
I'm noticing these newsstands on nearly every corner around here. Upon closer inspection, I see that are so much more than mere newsstands. Yes, they are selling papers and magazines but also candy, drinks, postcards, souvenirs of Paris, hats, and so much more! Oddly, I don't see very many people shopping at these little kiosks. I wonder why?

  • 59 Rue de Rivoli

    7 novembre 2017, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

While we were walking around Rue de Rivoli, we saw this building and didn't know what to make of it. We thought that it was just another store but, when I looked it up later on the internet, I found out that it was actually a very interesting sounding museum. I wish that we had known what this place was. I would have liked to see it.Leggi altro

  • So Many Choices

    7 novembre 2017, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

There's so many places to eat here in Saint Michel that it's hard to decide where we should go. For some reason, there's lots of pizza places around here. I think that we'll pass on pizza though. I have no idea what pizza is like here in France but I doubt that it could compare to what we have in New York City!Leggi altro

  • What a Great Lunch!

    7 novembre 2017, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

This humble gyro was a lot better than we expected it to be. We were surprised that the meat inside the gyro was chicken rather than pork or beef, as gyros are usually made with. It was sliced so thin that there was nowhere for the flavor to hide! It came with a side of fries, or frites, as they are called here. I'm not sure if it's the oil they are cooked in, or the type of potatoes used, but they are delicious! I must say, I definitely prefer the french fries in Paris more than what we have back home!Leggi altro

  • The Chicken Gyro Place

    7 novembre 2017, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

I think the reason that all the gyro places around here don't use pork, as is typical, is that they are all run by Muslims and I think that they are not allowed to handle pork. While we've never really thought about making a gyro sandwich out of chicken, I must admit that we really enjoyed it. We're going to have to remember this place because we'd like to come back again.Leggi altro

  • Let's Go Shopping!

    7 novembre 2017, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

After lunch, we did a bit of shopping in the Saint Michel district. There are so many souvenir shops around here. In fact, that seems to be the only sort of businesses in this neighborhood. I guess that Notre Dame brings in so many tourists that the souvenir shops just naturally spring up to take advantage of it. It's very convenient to have all these stores in one place. We can easily do price comparisons and see lots of variety.Leggi altro

  • Searching for Scarves

    7 novembre 2017, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

Kathy really wanted to get some scarves for people back home and, possibly, for herself. The quality, and price, seems to carry from shop to shop so we went to lots of different stores to try finding the best deals. It was fun shopping all over town but after a while they all started to look pretty much the same. The sign for these scarves says that one scarf is 6 Euro or you can get two for 10. Unfortunately, all of the scarves that Kathy liked were "not included" in the sale. Hmmmmmm. That's very misleading and not fair.Leggi altro

  • Insert Tickets Here

    7 novembre 2017, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

To get to the Louvre, we'll be riding on the RER. This is France's version of our Long Island Rail Road. I'm still amazed by how clean and new everything looks in the train stations here. I'm very impressed by how well they take care of their transportation system here. I wish people back home were as mindful about that as the people here are.Leggi altro

  • The Tracks

    7 novembre 2017, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

The stations in the Paris Metro are very nice! Most of them have some very unique qualities that make them stand out from all the others. This one, in Saint Michel, has this big mural over the tracks. It almost makes the station look like it's outside instead of several levels below street level.Leggi altro
